Wiki: Page Template Discussion - Techniques

Post by Hujio » Sun Jan 25, 2015 1:15 am

This discussion will be one of our on-going threads that will be created by Kanzenshuu administrators in the "Staff Help Requests" area. The first post in this thread will be regularly updated by an administrator based on the community feedback and discussion. In short, we have plans to launch a wiki for the Dragon Ball franchise that is tied to our website. We are asking for your help in developing what will be the structure -- NOT THE ACTUAL CONTENT -- of various pages throughout the wiki. If you are interested in contributing to the wiki, right now this is the best way for you to do it. Remember, we are not asking you to write articles at this point in time; rather, we are asking for your thoughts on how the eventual articles for the eventual wiki will be eventually put into place. This will help us to develop a style guide for pages on the wiki, which will in turn make it easier for you to contribute articles down the road.

Please keep your responses even more neatly-written, clear, and concise than we already expect elsewhere on the forum.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Please answer and discuss the following questions (and/or respond with more questions we should think about) regarding pages on the future wiki for locations in the series:
  • What information about a technique's name should be included (spellings, adaptations, pun source, etc.), if at all?
  • What information about the design/production of a technique should be included, if at all?
  • What information about the technique's usage should be included?
  • What essential information should be included in the information box?
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Infobox
| Technique Name: Japanese, romanization, and literal English translation (when possible)
| English Name(s): English adopted names from Ocean, FUNimation, or Viz that differ from the Japanese name
| Manga Debut: Appropriate Dragon Ball chapter
| Anime Debut: Appropriate anime episode
| Appears in: If the technique is only from a TV special or movie
|--------------
| Technique Data
| Classification: The technique's classification (per Daizenshuu 7 and Chōzenshū 4) -- martial arts, ki manipulation, and unique/special.
| Type: The type of technique within its classification.
| Range: The range of an offensive technique -- hand-to-hand, short-range, mid-range, or long-range.
| Creator: Who initially created the technique (if known).
|--------------
| Derived Techniques
| A list of derived techniques that are based on a parent technique.

General Overview
An overview of the technique, such as uses, conception, etc. Its length should be relative to the technique's importance in the series, but brevity and conciseness is still expected.

Usage
A description/list of the technique's users and any significant battles in which it is used.

Name
An explanation of the technique's name pun or naming scheme, if applicable.

Production
When appropriate, a description of the technique's production, including who initially designed it, notes about its design or conception, etc.

Notes
Information that does not fit into any other category. Reserved for real-world information. In-universe information should be incorporated into the biography or other available categories.

Was gonna let more experienced and knowledgeable users respond to this first but since nobody seems to be for the meantime anyway...

I think the name and kanji should be included in the article proper with the romanisation potentially being saved for the infobox? I would put other translations in there as well (such as those authored by FUNimation and Viz). I suppose this raises the question of where to stop - assuming this hasn't already been decided that is - and I would just feature these three for now with more to be added as you see fit. In the interest of being comprehensive, puns - where applicable - should also be documented in the article too.

There could be sound files of the technique (ripped from the anime) included somewhere in the article? Maybe not though if you're going to be using the manga as your prime source.
Hujio wrote:What information about the technique's usage should be included?
Potentially information about how long it took to originally develop the technique in-universe could be discussed.

So far, I think the information you have collated is good enough.
