I'm surprised how current Toriyama is apparently okay with how brutal the new DBS arc is turning out to be. We would need a miracle for DBS anime to reach this level.
A world without Dragon Ball is just meh.

Toriyama was never the reason that the anime is less violent.

Never said he was. But I'm surprised he didn't ask Toyotaro to toned it down anyway, because it's been long time since DB was this brutal.

Well but I don't think there was ever much reason to assume he would. I mean, the only reason to think any part of modern DB that wouldn't be toned down for international release and marketing the same way that Super has been was the way it was was because Toriyama isn't directly writing those parts of it himself. I'm sure if Tori himself was drawing Super's entire canon as an actual manga it'd be edgier than it is.

This is why people need to read the original manga.

There's a lot of gore and brutality in it—very graphic stuff. It shocked me the first time I actually sat down to read the manga.

You saw Batman v Superman? Is it the Ultimate Edition? No? Then you haven't seen Batman v Superman. Batman is out there busting his ass to avenge Goku and you won't even go see him do it?!

It seems like lately, probably because of how much Super’s anime is censored (and to a minor degree, even Toyotaro’s manga isn’t as brutal as Toriyama’s used to be) there’s a wrong misconception that Dragon Ball was never too dark or brutal, probably due to people forgetting stuff or because they never read the manga or because they only watched Dragon Ball Kai etc.
Moro stabbing the Namekian through his stomach is nothing too brutal for DB considering how each manga arc from Piccolo Daimao’s arc onwards has featured at least one very brutal scenes, much more than what Toyotaro has shown here.
Even when stuff wasn’t visually brutal, there were some very dark scenes such as that scene in Buu arc where two thugs were killing elders for fun.

Not so sure since Toriyama himself was the one who tone down the violent in Battle of Gods compared to what it was going to be. Saying that he didn't want anything too dark. Granted, that could have changed since 2013, but that was the last direct word we heard on Toriyama on the subject of violence.

That and people forgot that even the clean up Super anime has brutal scenes like these:

https://youtu.be/n4YppY6tUz8?t=8
https://youtu.be/WmboNn64iCk?t=98
https://youtu.be/-s_jzq9V64g?t=70
https://youtu.be/FfwN91UFo-0?t=42
https://youtu.be/MexyKrqNzNA?t=76
https://youtu.be/0BIuE91MegM?t=140

Like, it's only the lack of blood that keeps these things PG. The Feeza one particular is out of Fist of the North Star.

It wasn't so much to do with violence between the characters, but to do with the fact he wanted an upbeat story after the earthquake in Japan. Also we know Toriyama said that he didn't want to depict destruction after the earthquake, so Watanabe decided to not have them destroy a single building.

Actually, the Vegeta being stabbed and Zamasu slicing that alien in half had blood, just not a lot. That and Merged Zamasu clearly had stylized blood squirting out, you even hear the sound. And there was no way they were going to show blood for the Fist of the North Star inspired scene. They didn't even in the 90s. For example:

This is Gohan killing a Cell Jr in the anime: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/dra ... 0608023436

This is the manga: https://i.imgtc.com/mq1HCwN.jpg

This gem didn't even make it into the anime: https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/ ... dcs5_0.jpg

Even Freeza's Death Beam didn't really caused people to bleed in the anime: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZOkVf4DZWYk/U ... z95-40.jpg

Ok, these were the few exceptions.
In fact, DB-DBZ-DBGT have a lot very bloody scenes and in Super it's (almost) completely missing.
Don't get me wrong, I really like Super, but this censorship is very annoying.

The original Dragon Ball and GT actually didn’t have a lot of bloody scenes. Like one of the dragons got impaled on Goku’s fists in GT and didn’t bleed. Super 17 got the King Piccolo treatment and no blood. And in Dragon Ball, most of the blood didn’t happened until the end of King Piccolo and beyond.

I think you mean battle damage and not brutal scenes.

Why does Toyotaro seem to struggle with muscle anatomy? I mean, look at Goku's arm.

Interesting cover.

Toyotaro poses characters much differently from Toriyama (and most of dragonball). His characters are often in more exaggerated poses that you never saw in the original. This isn't a bad thing.

Muscles are fucking hard, dude. Toyotaro's biggest anatomy problems are usually mangling the shoulders and necks for the poses. Look at the gang down there, buncha hunchbacks.

Though that is mostly negligible because I'm more distracted by Jiren's...really really horrible looking aura. I mean, they both look like they were made in photoshop, but the colors on Jiren and the way they blend looks like he's supposed to look smelly or something.

I wonder if a Broly vs. Moro fight could happen. If Fusion can't work, having Broly be used may be useful.

Not impressed by the colors or aura effects at all, looks like an amateurish photoshop job. The poses used for Goku and Jiren are great though.
