Naruto airs Thursday evenings with Pokemon. Pokemon is the one that airs first and has the higher ratings, as an inverse of the Dragon Ball to One Piece situation. Pokemon's ratings aren't the greatest nowadays either, but both of them seem successful enough despite that.

I don't think either of them aired this week because last year's Pokemon movie was broadcast instead. That could bring in a lot of viewers and possibly skew this week's rankings, although it shouldn't affect Super directly.

Would Dragon Ball do better with ratings if it aired on TV Asahi instead?

I don't really see what benefit that would have. They're both over-the-air networks with multiple regional affiliates. On average, Fuji TV's highest rated anime (Sazae-san, Chibi Maruko-chan, One Piece, Dragon Ball) actually rank higher in total than TV Asahi's (Crayon Shin-chan, Doraemon, Precure). A network switch would probably just cause viewer loss from confusion.

Ratings are only one piece of the puzzle anyway. What really matters is merchandise sales.

Have Super merchandize even come out yet?

Not yet. I expect more of a 'rebranding' than a discreet set of merchandise options, similar to how all of a sudden when Kai was first launched everything that was previously sold under the 'Z' moniker became packaged as 'Kai'.

TV Asahi also has Kamen Rider and Sentai which has the same target audience as DB does in Japan and makes a lot of money. I thought maybe TV Ashai would help the series get better ratings. I guess I was wrong.

The entire Asahi's morning block have lower ratings than OP and DB. In fact, OP and DB are pretty much the only morning franchises making the top 10 every week.
If we exclude Precure, everything else has better timeslots. I think some people don't grasp how good it is to have ratings on par with Detective Conan, which is hugely popular and a primetime series.

Anyway, update:
http://www.tvguide.or.jp/ranking/timerr ... index.html

The first episode of Super was the #6 most recorded animation/tokusatsu of the week, so its viewership was above 10.0, all things considered. The last episode of Kai was #8.

Are episode 3's ratings available yet?

I might be wrong, but, there are quite a few shows on TV, that are slice of life for most part, for example:
- Hibike! Euphonium
- Non Non Biyori Repeat
- Working!!!
So maybe Japanese viewers are not interested to watch slice of life in Dragon Ball? Personally, i really love these moments, and enjoy these shows too :)

Still nothing? We had news of Episode 2's ratings last Wednesday. It's now Thursday which was when we had the ratings for Episode 1.

So if it still hasn't been announced yet it should today for sure. I'm expecting it'll go up by a good chunk this week.

Ratings for episode 3 are out. Dragon Ball Super came in 5th. Pretty solid, not much worse or better. Guess we can expect this for now until things pick up

http://www.videor.co.jp/data/ratedata/top10.htm#comic

1. Sazae 11.1%
2. One Piece 8.1%
3. Chibi Maruko-chan 7.8%
4. Detective Conan 7.5%
5. Dragon Ball Super 7.0%
6. Go! Princess PreCure 4.3%
7. Yo-Kai Watch 4.2%
and so on

Ah see I told you last week was an off week. Yeah that's not bad and it's closer to One Piece's ratings than the last two weeks as well.

7.0's not bad at all. I'll be curious to see how we do numbers-wise once big battles start happening.

Yeah, this was more like the average week. But Sazae seems to be getting lower and lower lately.
It just won't lose the #1 spot because nothing else will raise enough to be a threat, either. That's how the standards are these days, i guess.

Although, if DVR's viewings were included, that could be a different matter. OP and DB Kai/Super seem to be the only top 10 anime shows to get regurlarly high spots in the DVR ranking too.

Not a bad rating at all. A 7.0 is certainly respectable in this day and age for shonen anime on Japanese TV. I expect the ratings to go up by at least 1.0 once the action start in Episode 5.

Pretty nice jump for the raw number there

I'm mostly impressed with the large gap between Super and other shows. It shows that we are in the ballpark of One Piece and Detective Conan, and if we stay there we should be fine, even if the raw numbers fluctuate.

Yea, I'm surprised we're rivaling Conan myself. Kai 2014 averaged around 5.0 to 6.5 right?

It's nice to see DB rating as strongly as it is, and this is before anything big has happened. Gonna have to wait and see what happens, but for now it's looking good for Super.
