Dragon Ball Super DVD and Blu-ray Sales

Post by Lord Beerus » Wed Oct 12, 2016 2:32 pm

While for a merchandise driven series like Dragon Ball Super, DVD and Blu Ray sales have never been that important, I thought it would be neat that there would be a collective record of how well the series did on DVD and Blu-Ray respectively. It would interesting just see whether there are any trends in the sales figures for the show on DVD and Blu Ray, and while that it's mostly the DVD/BD collectors portion of the fanbase, that many shonen anime have, that are interested in purchasing the show on DVD and Blu-Ray it would be intriguing to see whether box sets for certain arcs sell more that especially since the first two consisted of retellings of the movies Battle Of Gods and Resurrection F. I mean, Resurrection F got six different releases in six months. Holy shit.

How this series does in the West, in regards to DVD and Blu-Ray sales will be even more intriguing, but we won't know those numbers for a few years to go now. But when/if I got those numbers, this thread will be updated with them accordingly.

Wow. Is the home video industry really that bad in Japan?

That's why the DVDs and Blu-Rays are so expensive.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

I mean damn if I was going to pay that much for a DVD or Blu-Ray I wouldn't want to buy it at all either. I would imagine overtime it will increase especially with this arc but that is nothing to be proud of one bit.

Yep. The sales usually peak in the first week and barely sell anything afterwards. Usually, the first week sale numbers are the total sale number. Especially for a mainstream long running shonen anime like Dragon Ball.

I'm more interested in how it compared to other anime

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

It's not reaching the levels of the Otaku-aimed anime that these home releases do really well with, but I don't think it's really expected to. Different culture.

Compared to One Piece, it seems proportionally in line with the differences between their weekly ratings, so I guess it's doing fine for what it is.

Well the sales keep going up after each box. Good sign. But the Super release is so godamn bare bones though, it's really hard to justify buying it. Wouldn't be surprised if folks in Japan feel the same way.

Also Super is aimed at children. I doubt children have enough money to buy these or that parents would be willing to buy considered they probably already seen it and or have it recorded.

Those numbers make sense for a long running series like DB, I wouldn't buy the BluRay except If there are a lot of episodes I liked and I would like to watch them again (coudl be the case with the last arc), I prefer buying the Bluray of a short anime that I liked.
But it is impressive that DBS sells more Bluray and DVDs than One Piece and Naruto.
Never thought Love Live was that popular in Japan.

Edit: Just checked and FnF got over 20k sales, that's even bigger than One Piece Film Gold which got 18k.

I'm really surprised that One Piece Film Gold isn't doing a lot better in BD. It's a stunning movie in every department.

Doesn't Dragon Ball have a bigger worldwide fanbase? Maybe some fans outside of Japan buy these DVDs/BDs for collection/whatever reason

Unless these numbers are only for Japan only sales

They're just for Japan so far no international BD/DVDs have gone on sale yet at least to my knowledge but yeah they'll most likely do well over in the states once FUNi list them.

But it's possible some fan outside of Japan bought them online, I think?

Only the hardcore fans import, especially if they don't know Japanese. There are no subs.

Japanese fans actually import more often since the DVDs tend to be cheaper and they enjoy the novelty of watching a dub. For awhile, Funi releases were the only way to watch Dragon Ball since Toei only had old videos.

Goku barely took a backseat in the Buu saga, at best he took a leisurely stroll round back while everyone else cried for him to come back.

Not much that can really be done about it, but I feel like it's worth pointing out that DBS vs OP sales isn't really an apples-to-apples comparison. Dragon Ball Super's home media releases are two-disc 12-episode sets that retail for ¥11,200 / ¥15,200, while the One Piece releases in question are 4-episode single volumes that retail for ¥4,860 / ¥5,940.

No idea if the differences in content/price translate to anything meaningful overall, but just wanted to bring it up for anyone that didn't already know.
