Most things has already been said here (though I'm one of those who enjoy basically every bit of Super), but the thing I particularly love in this series are the new characters, from Beerus and Whis (whom you propably are already familiar), to villains like Black. These characters and their interactions will surely keep you attached once you start watching.

I'm glad to hear that. One of my concerns when I first heard about BoG was whether or not the new characters would be a result of actual inspiration and enthusiasm on Toriyama's part, or phoned in. Thankfully--at least if the two movies are anything to go by--it was the former! I was wondering if he would be able to keep it up, but it sounds like he has.Champagne wrote:Most things has already been said here (though I'm one of those who enjoy basically every bit of Super), but the thing I particularly love in this series are the new characters, from Beerus and Whis (whom you propably are already familiar), to villains like Black. Actually, quick follow-up question...I know Toriyama wrote the first two movies (while leaving the specifics of the fight choreography to Toei), but to what degree is he involved with Super? Is he writing it like the first two movies, or is it more of a GT kind of situation where he contributed basic ideas and character designs while pretty much leaving the rest to Toei?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

He writes the drafts for the story. (No on is sure just how much or how little detail he puts into those drafts) and he does character designs for the new characters he writes. It's up to Toei and Toyotaro how they flesh everything out.TheBlackPaladin wrote:I'm glad to hear that. This sums it up effectively:
Battle of Gods (the movie) was originally written by Yusuke Watanabe, but then Toriyama came in and changed things around to fit the story he wanted to tell. That means no more lizard Beerus and no caped SSJ God.
Resurrection 'F' is entirely Toriyama's story from start to finish.
The anime adaptations and their changes for these movies are not Toriyama's. In the case of Resurrection 'F', those changes were actually specifically asked for by Kozo Morishita according to my sources.
Regarding Universe 6, Toriyama said "I’ve written a strange new story where they finally depart from this universe. They’re fighting against their neighbors, Universe 6!", this is a stark contrast to what he said for the Future Trunks arc: "I put together this story based on a suggestion from the editorial office." I think that's an important difference to make here.
Regarding how the production works, it's pretty simple, and Toriyama outlines it himself: "I write an outline of the entire plot, then the script writers break it up into episodes, expanding on things, changing things around, or adding in new bits as need be." That's pretty standard and the script credits each week confirm this.
Much like Battle of Gods, Super's original arcs are a big collaborative process. The balance between Toei and Toriyama probably slides back and forth, but it's impossible to say for sure. You can't make predictions based on this kinda stuff.

Subpar.
Certain ideas in each saga are... okay.
Others are frustratingly, painfully cancerous.
The "slice of life" episodes are hit and miss, mostly miss.
If you watch it with low standards, you might me be entertained and see that some effort is being put into it.
For me, I keep telling myself that it's all one big what-if, just like the DBZ movies. It tends to help me watch it though all the way.

DRAGON BALL IS THE KING OF (Fighting) ANIME!!!!!!! In my opinion, at least...
My reaction to anything about Dragon Ball post-2013 that I don't like and/or is stupid.

Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
I know this has been brought up in other threads, but...
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... ab/.107853
Super will be starting it's simulcast on Crunchyroll starting this Saturday, with them adding chunks of previous episodes each week, so within a few weeks, it'll all be online legally.
No better time to start watching, I say. Unless you have to have a dub.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
I think Super is pretty dang good.
The new characters are by far the best part of it. They are mostly all interesting, memorable and well-designed. Beerus, Whis, Hit, Zamasu and Black are all really great examples of this.
I really enjoy the wide tonal range. You have your fun slice-of-life styled episodes, the humor sequences, a tournament, intense fights, and incredibly dark moments. I also enjoy the contrast between the small moments on Earth with the larger Universe-spanning parts.
One thing I also really enjoy about Super is that we seem to get more intimate glances into who the characters actually are and what they represent. I would go into this, but I don't want to spoil the show for you.
A common criticism of Super's character designs is that it is just "palette swaps" but I find this to be preferable to the incredibly bootsy SSJ3/SSJ4. I think there is a nice elegance to the character designs in this show in general, and I also believe that is exemplified in the new forms.
Everyone I've introduced the show to has been hooked on it.
Also don't let my avatar fool you, I like GT, but I don't think it is at all a good show. It's certainly not better than Super. (I just thought the poster was cute)

THE ONLY REASONABLE ANSWER:
If you think I mostly HATE DBZ, you'll know that people have different perception of the show.
What you can do is to watch it, have an opinion and join this great gathering of heroes to tell yours.

I learned english listening to songs. So I don't know anything about. The day you had to learn play piano by just listening .mp3, you'll understand.

Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
Aside from the bad to ok animation and art that a lot of episodes give us (most noticiable in the BoG, FnF and Shampa arc), and the fact that I didn't like the first two arcs, aside from the fillers and a few things they added... I like it, specially this current F. Trunks arc. Its pretty good. The manga is also giving us good moments that doesn't happen in the anime that me and many people would like to see them being animated. So its also good to take a look at a manga chapter after you see 5-10 episodes of the anime to see the differences By all means, read the manga
For the characters, I mostly like Beerus, Shampa and Black in the series.
Characters like Goku, Vegeta and Bulma get a lot of moments and episodes focused on them.
Characters like Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin get a few moments and episodes for themselves.
All of them are enyojable, so go and watch them.

Super isn't what people expected out of a new Dragonball series in 18 years, so if you have high expectations you'll be disappointed.
If you want an average to good and sometimes great show, then Super is for you. I don't think its better than any of the DBZ sagas (not even the current Zamasu arc), but its still pretty entertaining.

Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
Everything other than the RoF arc has been great-to-fantastic. A worthy successor to DBZ, especially the current Future Trunks material.
Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
I think Super is good so far. It had somewhat of a rough start, especially as it had to start with what people knew already (the overall thing) and it has the problem that it is a child of modern days where everyone knows everything for magical reasons but for the problems it might have, it provides some really interesting concepts and atmosphere at times. The Zamas saga in my opinion makes up for the first "okay" year that I watched Super. And even that was not too bad.

Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
To be honest, I'm finding DBS between good and boring at this point.
The first two arcs were adaptations of the Battle of Gods/Resurrection F films, so they weren't bad but they dragged it on longer than it should have. Some new elements worked out and some didn't, but on the whole it was the same story in a longer format. In its defense, a lot of people hadn't seen the films and if the show had come first people would be saying better things about it.
The Universe 6 Tournament arc had the most potential and creativity to my mind. It introduced an alternate universe filled with characters who may have been parallel versions but had as much variety and character to stand on their own (Chanpa, Frost, Cabba). And while it was primarily a tournament, the final battle was pretty awesome not just in action but in twists.
The Black Goku arc started out well, but then it's now become boring for me. It started with the dark tension of the first Future Trunks story and then evolved into the slow listless of the Buu arc. They keep trying to find ways to defeat an unstoppable villain, some of which should have worked (changing history with erasing an individual), and then this new villain finds a way to get around them. And that's not taking into account the tangle of the DB timeline...

Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
I haven't watched Super either, but I am curious to why the Return of F arc is just trash in the series but 'fun,' 'great,' 'a good follow up to BoG,' as a film? What are the issues with it vs the film that make it so bad?
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada
Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
Direction, animation and pacing, which are all fine to good in the movie, and each a possible franchise nadir in the TV adaptation.Attitudefan wrote:I haven't watched Super either, but I am curious to why the Return of F arc is just trash in the series but 'fun,' 'great,' 'a good follow up to BoG,' as a film? Also some really questionable added material.
It's a plot written for a flashy, colorful, ninety-minute movie, and it works in that context. Stretching it into a roughly ten-episode arc was going to have some issues to begin with, but the execution is even worse than you'd expect.

As a whole it's ok.
6.5/10
Ok-Average animation (with few episodes of animation bump)

Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.
Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
Overreaction to the bad animation in the arc, mostly. The arc is better written than the film. Not that that's very hard to do, mind you, since the film is the worst thing to come out of the franchise since Evolution, but it still is better.Attitudefan wrote:I haven't watched Super either, but I am curious to why the Return of F arc is just trash in the series but 'fun,' 'great,' 'a good follow up to BoG,' as a film? Re: No-Spoilers Question: How is Super so far?
People actualy dislike ROF movie? Why? Was pretty fun to watch.
Well, guess i have a more rare opinion here. Since i absolutely love Super. Even ROF arc, tho ep 24 was pretty bad, but meh ,its just one ep, who cares.
For me, as long as they dont turn Goku into a kid and dont bring in some new really really annoying character, i am all game.
Oh and i absolutely love Beerus, WHis, Champa, Vados, Black, Zamasu, Hit, Magetta, Freeza, ssj blue, Future Trunks(expecially his new form), Super Shenlong, Mai(she is such a badass), Yajirobe( am so glad they reintroduced him and made him relevant), Gowasu, Frost, Cabba, Roshi and allot more characters who got introduced in Super.
