Kami and Nail scene: what's your interpretation of it?
So in episode 118 after Piccolo and Gohan are getting hit by Pirina's mouth blast we get a scene of Piccolo in the ground with Nail and Kami next to him with Kami pointing Piccolo forward.
My interpretation of it is Kami telling Piccolo not give up and move forward after he has been swallowed by the U6 Namekian's fighting spirit, with Kami and Nail's figures being a reminder of the weight he carries as well after their sacrifices.
So whats your opinion on the matter? What do you think Kami wanted to tell Piccolo? What was the scene trying to convey?

Piccolo was seemingly intimidated by the sheer quantity of force backing up Saonel and Pirina, so it was likely to remind him one of two things, or possibly even both.
-There's no reason to find Saonel and Pirina's fighting spirit daunting, as he himself also has the will and determination of his own kind backing him up through his endeavors.
And second reason, which I personally feel holds more validity:
-Saonel and Pirina may have their whole race supporting them, but he has the support from Gohan, his best friend and student, the one who shaped him into the being who he is today. And that such devotion is emanating with just as much, if not an even greater amount of fighting spirit. The devotion part could be reinforced by how Gohan was shown shielding Piccolo from an attack.

Re: Kami and Nail scene, whats your interpretation of it?
Despite not a single word being spoken in that scene, I think the symbolism was pretty straightforward. They were meant to serve as a reminder of what he himself was fighting for and that despite Saonel and Pirina having several other lives backing them up, he had his own support system fighting along side him. This might be more of a personal interpretation, but I think he wasn't being just overwhelmed by their fighting spirit, but by a sense of kinship and understanding of their situation given that he himself experienced it first hand.
Had Nail been given a bit more importance in that scene, I would've thought it was supposed to mean that the namekians of their universe depended on him too, but Kami was the one he looked at and it was Kami that pointed towards Gohan. Maybe it was a "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" kind of deal?

I thought it was really simple. "Get up. Move forwards and fight"

My interpretation is simply that Piccolo is not alone, he has Kame and Nail with him, and Gohan too.
It was nice to see those two characters make a cameo in DBS.

I think both of your reasons can fit well enough together, adding to that Gohan stalling the U6 Namekians while Piccolo charging his SBC(with Piccolo saying the same words he said when he fired it to Goku)seems to be a very clear reference to the Raditz fight which is when Gohan and Piccolo first met but maybe that is too much of a stretch.supercat wrote:Piccolo was seemingly intimidated by the sheer quantity of force backing up Saonel and Pirina, so it was likely to remind him one of two things, or possibly even both.

I mean i thought of the same yeah but it seems a little too weird to have Kami and Naill appear(even if it is for a few seconds)when they could have went for a simplier way for that kind of message. After all i saw a lot of people having different opinions on what that scene meant so i wanted to hear more on it.GodKaio-Ken wrote:I thought it was really simple. Re: Kami and Nail scene, whats your interpretation of it?
I think it was kind of a poorly done scene in my opinion. I would have liked to see some sort of internal monologue which would have lead to character development for Piccolo. Instead, it's kind of a wasted scene. Looked really cool though, and the cameos were cool as well.

Piccolo struggled to keep up his determination to fight the U6 namekians, knowing they were the last warriors of U6 and he'd be responsible for their and their (and his) entire race's demise along with the rest of U6. He also realized that the U6 namekians fused with many of their own just to stand a chance in the tournament. Kami points at Gohan to remind Piccolo he still has a job to do regardless, which made Piccolo realize his warrior spirit temporaily dwindled while fighting, the same thing he called out Gohan for before the tournament. He even says it after making up his mind about it. This is similar to when Gohan defeated Obuni and Gohan discovered Obuni also had a family like his own.
I could see Vegeta going through something similar if he fought the U6 saiyans and they were the last U6 warriors standing.

Re: Kami and Nail scene, whats your interpretation of it?
I thought it was basically Kami saying "Get up, you're not eliminated yet because Gohan saved you"
"Gohan, let it go. It is not a sin to fight for the right cause. There are those who words alone will not reach. Cell is such a being. I know how you feel Gohan, you are gentle, you do not like to hurt. I know because I too have learned these feelings. But it is because you cherish life that you must protect it. Please drop your restraints. Protect the life I once loved. You have the strength, my scanners sensed it..." -Android 16

I personally loved that scene. It conveys so much without saying anything. Like it contrasts the millions of lives that are with the two Universe 6 Namekians and just Nail and God. It's so eerie too. It gives a sense of hopelessness. Piccolo is completely outnumbered. Then God points to Gohan where the light was. Such great directing.

I LOVED it! And you know why? The theme song that played! It is definitely one of Sumitomo’s best tracks! Top 5 definitely. Hands down.

I have seen a lot of praise for the background music this episode, shame I never got to enjoy it..GodVegetto91 wrote:I LOVED it! And you know why? The theme song that played! It is definitely one of Sumitomo’s best tracks! Top 5 definitely. Hands down.
Was all the background music equally good throughout the episode or did only some parts stand out?

Re: Kami and Nail scene, whats your interpretation of it?
Piccolo I think was somewhat annoyed to be fighting against his own kind. It's as if Kami was reminding Piccolo his real family was Gohan, in front, protecting him, not the U6 Namekians. Then Piccolo realizes it is true and reminded him he is a warrior first and foremost. There was no need of dialogue, it only worked thanks to the great directing of this episode. Sure the inversion of Gohan saving Piccolo was fan service but, hey it worked wonders and actually full of sense. Piccolo/Gohan vs other Namekians certainly has a lot going on, there is a lot of things that feel natural, moreover that these Namekians were fused, Piccolo without doubt was sensible to this for obvious reasons from the past also tied to Namekian mythology as well as Piccolo's mythology. In this episode (118) we basically had the whole Gohan/Piccolo relationship in a nutshell. And even Gohan/Goku's relationship when you dig a bit... We had there some kind of paternity triangle between Gohan/Piccolo/Goku, the student became better than the master (Piccolo is kind of second father to Gohan). Then the Kameha Goku/Gohan simultaneously not in same space was also awesome. It's like Gohan completely nailed both legacies from and his father and Piccolo. Not only we got the past from Gohan/Piccolo but eventually the future relation between Gohan/Goku, and what if Gohan would become the new Goku? He was finally worth it, in this EP we had Gohan shining for real. Gohan and PIccolo had a great teamwork leading them to victory.
There is no need to explain, the scenes show and we understand, that is part of what makes Dragon Ball great. If only we had more stuff like this, I hope they keep going there, this is exactly the kind of stuff I expect DB to tell me.

The music placement is about half the reason I re-watched the episode, it was that effectively used.Ki Breaker wrote:I have seen a lot of praise for the background music this episode, shame I never got to enjoy it..GodVegetto91 wrote:I LOVED it! Stand-out moments for me were: when Pirina and Soanel reveal that they fused, the moment when Piccolo wakes up, when he regains his resolve which then moves over to Goku fending off Zirloin's
charge, and of course, the double Kamehameha. The track that plays during U2 and U6 erasure is also really good, but that apparently is a track from Kai "trapped between past and present."

I thought is was Kami pointing towards Gohan like look at your pupil, he is the light, you must keep going, then you see Gohan blocking that blast, a throw back to the Nappa sacrifice.

"Look, your pathetic son finally returned one favor, now get your sh*t together and fight"
that was a cool scene, but it wasn't well handled, it would be cool to heart both talking and saying something
