Well, I finally decided to see this movie and honestly I thought it was pretty mediocre.
Really man? Mediocre? Look I get that everyone has their opinion, but I really do hope you realize you're in a VEEEERY vast minority of people.
Well, I don't think he is. This movie sure is better than Ressurection of F, but didn't top BoG neither some of the greatest Toei Z films like Bojack Unbound, Fusion Reborn or Wrath of the Dragon.

So mediocre is a good way to define it and that coming from a person who watched twice, with the last one putting aside the hype and the outstading animation.

In the original Bardock felt affection for his comrades but not for his son which is certainly questionable.
Why is questionable? It seems like a common Saiyan trait. Imagine if the son of Vegeta was born as a weakling? Would he care about his son at all? He probably would dump him to the otherside of the galaxy to might never know his true indentity.

Also I always saw Bardock affection towards his comrades as something like brother in arms relationships.

Broli is basically the DragonBall equivalent to porn:

It has a flimsy story, takes some time to find it's groove but from there it's all action. The action however is spectacular and what you've paid for.
Yeah, like in 2019 there still people who actually pay for porn :P

also this the case of the king vegeta who was proud of his son vegeta. but with tarble, he probably probably would dump him to the otherside of the galaxy

but one thing is vegeta, he is a high-class saiyan which should have a strong son but not even vegeta had some appreciation for nappa or raditz despite they are being a partner for so many years.
bardock is a lower class saiyan with friends who were also lower class is not that he could demand toó much a baby lower class and taking into account that goku was of his own blood I find this behavior questionable for someone who has an appreciation for his people.

Just a heads up, picked up the Australian release and it doesn't have the green tint. Runs at 23.976p, but it looks like Madman might have their own encode because it looks like they authored their own release (rather than porting Funi's or Manga's). Haven't noticed any macroblocking and similar as I've only briefly checked for the tint, but I'll look for any issues when I watch it tonight. Subtitles also use the dub names.

Oh shit, they made their own release rather than porting Funi's?? That's a first. Glad to hear the green tint isn't present. That was my biggest worry about the Madman release. I'm gonna be getting the steelbook version. soon.

Is the audio for the dub track good? Their theatrical release had problems with the music sounding way off and too quiet. I know Funi fixed it on their release.

Thanks for the heads up on Aus release. I'm in UK at the moment and was thinking about picking it up here but now might just wait.

It seems to be their own release, rather than having the hallmarks of a Funi or Manga UK release. I'll be happy to check for any details that might be a giveaway.
I only really checked out the Japanese track so far (LPCM 2.0, not the 5.1 tracks), but I'll check the English dub for you. I'm also happy to post screenshots if that's appropriate for this thread. Took this one to compare with the Funi and Manga shots that were on Twitter, and it looks closer to the Manga release. https://postimg.cc/zyRGS65t

Edit: The English 2.0 track seems to be free of volume problems. I'll check the surround tracks when I can.

Madman's Broly Blu-ray is awesome. It's got 2.0 and 5.1 audio tracks for both English and Japanese. They've got subtitles for Japanese and English. The menus look nice and aren't just the typical Funimation menus with looped footage and trailer music playing in the background (they have the official OST playing in the background). There's no green tint. The dub audio sounds just fine unlike when it released in theatres. Only downside is that there are no extra features like Funi's release, but I never watch that stuff anyway.

Funi's extra features were pure garbage so you're not missing much.

I'm still surprised toriyama wrote broly into canon, and it worked. He basically caught lightning in a bottle.

Exactly one year ago, they would announce this to be Broly's fourth movie.

What a journey, my dear folks. Well, despite all the things... It brought Gine on-screen at least. :)

Bluray just released in Hong Kong. Thinking about double dipping in hopes of a better audio track for the Japanese version.

Is the Hong Kong bluray release free of the green tint problem?

I'm trying to find out myself and considering on double dipping but the $30 is kinda steep for a barebones Blu-ray. There are English subtitles and it appears to be a single layer disc. Since Hong Kong falls into the same region coding as North America, these discs will play on North American Blu-ray players.

I'm also not too excited about the Cantonese dub track. It's only in Dolby Stereo 2.0 and has a completely new voice cast. TVB is not directly involved in this dub and has not dubbed anything Dragon Ball since Kai (Cell Arc).

And didn't even need a elongated, drawn out, emotionally forced background on Broly to get the fans to warm up to him.
The writing was concise and effective unlike today's manga/anime's. Even look at the difference in writing quality between Toriyama and Toyotaro's current Galactic Patrol arc.

I'm looking forward to Toriyama's next work.

Overall, I felt like this movie was more climatic and larger scale in terms of production, than it really was in terms of story significance and script.

The film has the huge blockbuster production you'd expect from a Toei movie, but doesn't really feel like it has the relevance and scale in the script. Almost adverse to the incredible production, the script, while fun and still makes for entertaining viewership, feels rather austere in comparison to the effort actually put into bringing it life. For example, despite the massive scale created by the staff in the main conflict of the film, fighting Broly, the script feels very by the numbers in how the situation is handled, which sort of undercuts the massive spectacle Broly is presented as being. Perhaps the film would have benefitted more from higher stakes, or making Broly a more difficult opponent?

Just some observations on my part.

To me, the movie was less about “how will they beat Broly” and more about Broly’s safety and survival since he was forced into his current situation. He was never meant to be a wall like Jiren. More like a poor soul who has been used and manipulated all his life and now he’s going to die.

I can respect that, but I felt they mainly played Broly being a threat pretty straight pretty much until Gogeta is preparing the Kamehameha, where he takes on a far more genuinely menacing appearance.

I'm not sure about that. Even Goku almost got through Broly until he indirectly called his dad a bad guy. Broly never came off as a threat to me, more like an abused dog who finally snapped and the heroes are forced to put him down. I mean, the movie played Broly beating up Freeza for laughs, not for drama.

Someone uploaded a Blu-ray rip of the Cantonese dub. It appears the Hong Kong release of the Blu-ray is color corrected without the green tint. Also note that the Hong Kong Blu-ray is also a single layered disc so I'm not sure how much of an improvement it is over the Funi disc.
