Well, I finally decided to see this movie.

And honestly I thought it was pretty mediocre.
Really man? Mediocre? Look I get that everyone has their opinion, but I really do hope you realize you're in a VEEEERY vast minority of people.
It looks amazing and the choreography is even better, but the action and story could've been balanced better. don't think it was a mediocre movie but I also think it could've been much better.

Huh... Why pointing that out? When it comes to Dragon Ball, it's actually very interesting to see what the "minority" thinks. Because there is a standard and it is pretty much "bigger, louder fights = great" (and seeing how things are today, besides fights, people prioritize animation as well), but when those do not meet the expectations of someone, that's when things become interesting.

Animation and choreography were great. That's about it. All flash and spectacle.
The rest? Well it was honestly boring and I don't see what's so much "better" about this Broly compared to Movie 8 Broly.

All flash and spectacle.
This was a problem in the tournament of power arc as well. It looks like this may be the direction the franchise will be taking moving forward. If this is the case it's unfortunate because despite fighting being important in the original manga, its story was just as important.

Exactly. they're prioritizing marketing and fanservice over telling a story. And that's my biggest problem with modern Dragon Ball.

Weirder than prioritize fights and animation above story and development? Nah, nothing can top that.

I think Toei and everyone involved are banking on fans prioritizing the fights over the story and based on Broly's success, it worked.

As a matter of fact, it does surprise me that in 2019 the majority put flash and spectacle above all else. That surprises me... Not in a good way, though.

Well, flash and spectacle are some important elements of the franchise after all, so it's perfectly normal for these to be highlighted.

While the movie looked indeed gorgeous and had amazing animation, I wished it had fewer flashy fights and more grounded/slowed down ones.
Some fights, especially in the Gogeta section of the movie, were just way too fast and filled with effects.
I was hoping for some more varied and memorable choreography. Instead the movie’s fights seem like they are the stereotypical Dragon Ball fight with all the screams, ki blasts and characters flying at incredible speeds, with not enough grounded hand to hand combat. For example, I liked a lot the part where Goku threw Broly to the ground and the beginning of Vegeta vs Broly and I wished Nagamine could have found a sweet spot between super fast fights and slower ones. Of course I’m not saying the fights were bad by any means, but I am more of a fan of those slower sequences where you can see the actual martial arts techniques and exchanges (ex. I liked when Gogeta landed a elbow on Broly’s face and when he landed some roundhouse kicks as I could clearly see those).

There was a story in Broly. The fighting didn't happen until a good ways into the film.

Let's not act like the orignal manga was telling this amazing story when we had large chucks of the Cell arc dedicated to nothing but fighting. What story was being told in the Buu arc? Seemed Toriyama was changing his mind every chapter! SS3 for example served no purpose to the story whatsoever other than another flashy

Yeah, at some points I couldn't even tell what was going on in the Gogeta fight.

It was actually. There's a reason why it was the #1 best selling manga for over a decade. There's a reaosn why the most successful mangaka such as Oda and Kishimoto point to it as what influenced them and their work. There's a reason why despite it being so long since it ended and so many manga coming out, mangaka even today are influenced by it. There's a reason why it completely changed the way Shonen manga was made. There's a reaosn why Goku is the face of Shonen and maybe even manga as a whole. In order to do all that, a manga's story can be nothing less than amazing.

I highly, highly doubt you're going to see anyone point to Super as an influence on them and their work. It's even less likely you're going to see anything from Super impact the manga and anime industry in the way the original manga did. If the only way to defend Super is to downplay what the original manga did, then maybe what you're defending isn't that good. As things stand now, Super will never be able to stand next to the original manga, no matter how hard fans tell themselves it does.

Honestly I miss the "more brutal" fights of the DB and Z days. The fights now are cool and all but I feel like the stakes have gone down. I understand that this is a "show for children" but the blood and dismemberment of old really helped sell the danger of a new enemy. I personally believe by sterilizing the violence you are actually sending the wrong message. Violence and death and injury are not cool. There are consequences to the violence. By taking out the consequences it sends the message that injury and death are not to be concerned about.

Also, I know it's the name of the show. But the dragon balls need to be eliminated in order for the manga/show to grow. It makes it too easy to recover and lowers the stakes. The ToP, even with it's faults, had stakes with the whole "you will be permanently erased" if you lose plot.

The movie certainly had more of a story compared to Ressurection ‘F’, and there were some solid characters moments with Broly and Paragus, but the problem is that once the fighting starts, the story more or less completely vanishes, and the movie basically becomes this big light show that, while well animated (outside of the occasional bits of CGI) can be rather tedious to sit through for some.

Honestly I thought the rather than saying the story vanished at the beginning of the fight, the rest of it just tended to be told through fighting

“A new tale of the warrior saiyan race is told through combat”

That was the Tagline of one of the trailers, I think the 3rd one, and idk, this quote in particular just stuck out to me when watching the film. Like how a game sometimes tells it’s story through its gameplay rather than having many cutscenes (something like, Journey, or Papers, Please). Idk, might be looking too far into it, but I just feel like once the fighting started, the idea became to literally, let the fighting speak for itself.
Until the Battle is Won.

I wholeheartedly agree. The original manga is outstanding. Even compared to the original anime (which I am not much a fan, by the way). I'd rather read any of 42 tankobon over watching an episode of OG Dragon Ball or Z any day of the week.

Broli is basically the DragonBall equivalent to porn:

It has a flimsy story, takes some time to find it's groove but from there it's all action. The action however is spectacular and what you've paid for,
