Ranking Super's dubs

Post by Danfun64 » Mon May 13, 2019 11:45 pm

When it comes to DB, DBZ, DBGT, and DBZ Kai, dub comparisons have been done to death. However, I'm not sure how many international dub comparisons Super has received, and as some dubs like Funimation's English dub and (AFAIK) the Portugal Portuguese dub slowly trot to the finish line of Super's initial 131 episode run, now is an ideal time to rank Super's dubs before Japanese Super premieres new episodes.

Some of these dubs are similar in level to the Kai dubs regardless of whether it's a good thing or a bad thing (French and German), some retain usage of old and inaccurate terminology (Hungarian, Portugal Portuguese, and Mediaset Italian), some have a noticeable increase in jokes compared to the original Japanese (Funimation English, Brazilian Portuguese, Portugal Portuguese), some see the return of an old acting pool (Bang Zoom English to a degree corresponding to Harmony Gold DB and Animaze USA DBGT Final Bout; to a far lesser extent Funimation English with Ocean's Brian Drummond as Copy Vegeta), some are the first proper series dub their respective language has ever had (the Polish dub, which aside from what I am assuming is based on the French DBZ Movie 12-13 double feature, has only ever gotten a voiceover "dub" of either the French or Japanese before Super), etc. There's a lot to unpack here.

How would you rank each of the dubs on accuracy? On voice acting? On how good the OP/ED/insert song dubs are where they exist? On censorship? (Note that I'm only including dubs of the series here. Dubs of the new Z movies or of Super Broly are ignored in this list for the sake of simplicity. Asian dubs are only missing on this list due to my lack of knowledge on them. Feel free to add them to your own rankings if you have sufficient knowledge on them )

Bang Zoom English (light censorship, only goes up to 27 episodes)
Funimation English (available in both uncut and edited formats, dubs at least some of the OPs/EDs/insert songs)
Castellan Spanish (available in both uncut and edited formats, although apparently some of the edits have ended up in the uncut version as well, like Hit "defeating" people instead of assassinating them. At least much of the old terminology has been removed in favor of more accurate terms... though since Kai was never dubbed in this language, it's kind of a too little too late situation)
Latin American Spanish (light censorship, dubs at least some of the OPs/EDs/insert songs)
Portugal Portuguese (light censorship, retains much of the poor terminology of the DB and DBZ French dub, dubs at least some of the OPs/EDs/insert songs)
Brazilian Portuguese (light censorship, adds jokes that weren't in the original, a trait that apparently older Brazilian Portuguese dubs didn't do. dubs at least some of the OPs/EDs/insert songs)
Hebrew (light censorship(?), dubs at least some of the OPs/EDs/insert songs)
French (available in both uncut and edited formats; carrying on with Kai, much of the old terminology has been removed in favor of more accurate terms)
German (censorship status unknown, but an uncut version is definitely available; is similar to the Kai dubs, including apparently poor screams)
Hungarian (censorship status unknown; retains much of the poor terminology of the DB and DBZ French dub, and even reverts some of the good changes the GT dub made)
Polish (censorship status unknown; The first real dub in this language since what I am assuming is based on the French DBZ Movie 12-13 double feature. Terminology is good AFAIK)
Italian (censorship status unknown; retains poor terminology from previous Mediaset dubs)
