MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 3/4/24!)

Post by Gaffer Tape » Tue Jan 24, 2012 2:30 pm

I'm assuming this is the right place for this. I admit I've never really ventured into the Fan-Created Works section before. But as some of you know, I do video reviews on YouTube, under the name MistareFusion. People have seemed to like my Dragon Box videos, so I've decided to move away from reviewing home releases of the series to reviewing the series itself. So to that end, I have created the Dragon Ball Dissection. But rather than analyzing the manga volume by volume, I have decided to go story arc by story arc and then rank them. I just finished uploading the introduction video:

Dragon Ball Dissection: The Introduction

So hopefully you guys will find this interesting. I'd love to hear your comments and feedback, and, hopefully the vast knowledge here will keep my on my toes and keep me from saying anything stupid or inaccurate. :P

You continue to be a far braver man that I for tossing this material out to the general YouTube population.

I salute you, good sir, as a true gentleman and scholar. May the best of luck be brought your way.

I think it's a great idea. I really like the idea about analyzing and ranking the arcs separately. I believe this is the best way to keep a clear track of how (if) the story, the art, the mood progressively changed from one storyline to the other.

Will each episode be dedicated to one arc ?

Thank you, Mike. I've been tossing this idea around for the past couple of years but fear of the YouTube masses has always kept my feet firmly planted on the ground. I guess I'm just feeling more adventurous in 2012!

To Mischi, probably not. I'd like to, but they'd each be very long, difficult to digest videos. I might be able to do the first arc in a single video because it's so short. Instead, I might try to structure each video on a particular topic in an arc or section of an arc, and then conclude each arc with a summary of my points and the ranking.

Ah, nice, nice. I love watching your videos so more Dragon Ball stuff is welcomed. A lot of the arcs could fill one video per arc, but once you get to Namek I could see you running into a bit of trouble having to cover so much.

Thanks for promoting the vid, coola. I was too tired last night after uploading it to bother doing it myself. But I guess I'll make it official!

DBD: The Hunt for the Dragon Balls Arc Part 1!

My new Dragon Ball analysis series finally begins! In this first part of the first arc, pilgrims from a classic Chinese fable get transformed into a bunch of greedy, selfish morons who may or may not harness the greatest powers of the cosmos. Plus, what is the measure of a talking turtle?

That was great. :) "Blooma" threw me at first but I quickly and surprisingly got used to it. Bulma being so quick so show off her sex appeal to get what she wants, hilarious, and yea it makes you not care so much that she's always getting into trouble where she could easily be killed.

Theese videos are pretty kickin' rad. They get a little too over analytical on some of the smaller stuff for my taste but they're still really fun. The only thing that grates on me is you're doing your best TGWTG contributor impression and I can't help but to feel you should tinker around with developing your own style a bit more. Then again I really, really don't care for anything TGWTG related so that could just be my bias creeping in.

Can't wait to see more! I marathoned your Power Ranger vids too and they were a blast.

I think that's a good idea, particularly because the story arc divisions are largely after-the-fact creations. There's no particular reason why the changes in the art/storytelling/whatnot would divide cleanly across those divisions.

Very true, and, particularly for long arcs I intend to make note of that (the Freeza arc comes to mind immediately as one where the series feels and looks completely different going in than it does going out). But I would still like to look at them as individual story arcs. For one, it's not something I've seen done too terribly often in this manner. Secondly, despite it being made up on the fly (and at least a few having huge, noticeable shifts in intent), they still end up forming relatively self-contained stories. Heck, the fact that that is the case, that stuff made up on the fly, forming into contained stories within a whole story, is part of the reason doing it this way interests me, just to see if that method of crafting a story is effective.
Akumaito Beam wrote:They get a little too over analytical on some of the smaller stuff for my taste but they're still really fun.

Hmm. Interesting take. Don't worry, though, I already know of a lot of major elements later on that I intend to dwell on, so it won't just be small stuff. Early DB is so simple, though, that really digging into the minutae of it is what I find more interesting. Then again, this is a "dissection," so picking apart the minutae is what it's all about! :D
The only thing that grates on me is you're doing your best TGWTG contributor impression and I can't help but to feel you should tinker around with developing your own style a bit more.
Also interesting. Of all the videos I've done, I'd say this and the Power Rangers stuff are the farthest removed from the TGWTG style and tone (with the exception of maybe Linkara's History of Power Rangers). Now my Batman reviews and Super Mario Bros. Super Show, where I review more for comedy, those I could see you saying were like TGWTG. But then again, I haven't really been able to keep up with that site lately, so maybe I'm out of the loop. But I will keep an eye out for that. Thank you for the feedback!

Got kind of a technical question for you Gaffer Tape, hopefully that's okay. I was wondering what program you use to make the vids? Specifically, how you're getting the 'camera' as it were to pan over specific panels on a large copy of the manga pages. Just curious, as an effect like that would be helpful for future projects of my own.

Great job on the series thus far. 'Blooma' is actually taking less getting used to than I figured it would. :P

I use the editing software (that I use to make all my videos) Avid Pinnacle Studio, but I would be surprised if there was any editing suite that didn't allow that capability. For mine, it's a very simple process for still images that allows you to pan and zoom. Obviously the higher resolution image you have, the better your results will be, as quality will start to degrade if you zoom in past the point of its native resolution.

Believe me that no one's more surprised by that than I am. I'd actually been thinking of doing this series for about two years now but have been putting it off partly because of that very reason. I had only first started considering the possiblity of that name when I joined these forums, and I've been waffling back and forth ever since. I knew I didn't want to start this until I was sure of how I wanted to do it. If you see my DBox 2 video, you will notice I do say her name as "Bulma" (although with the long "u" sound, not the FUNimation pronounciation). But just before starting this video I knew I had to make the decision so I finally just went with it, and I'm very shocked at how natural it feels.

That's probably why I don't seem to have access to it at the moment. I uh...kinda still am stuck with Windows Movie Maker until I can get enough cash together to get a better professional editing program, heh heh...heh...yeah. ^_^;

And yeah, resolution would be an issue with what I have in mind for it probably, so I'd just have to make the zoom a little less than what you're capable of, since it looks like your pages are HUGE.

I never really paid much though to her name before now, being so used to the FUNi pronunciation as I am, but during one of the previous podcasts, VegettoEX mentioned Blooma as well and it really does make more sense when you think on it. It preserves the pun better.

That said though, I'll probably stick to Bulma myself out of ease, but I can at least understand and go with Blooma.

Really depends on your source, and if you have a functional scanner. I took a scan of my DBox7 cover (pity I didn't use scans in my DBox reviews), and I could zoom in tight enough to make out the individual dots of screentone on Goku's face before it hit its max resolution. I'd be interested to hear more about what your project is.
