haha kaboom

By the way, Zamasu's text goes off the bottom of the screen on purpose. Most people picked up on that, but one person went ballistic about it (accusations of meme stealing with terrible cropping etc), so I figure I should mention that I did do it intentionally.
also, if the image doesn't show up, let me know

I don't hate the new one, he's just way too over hyped for me, and less interesting. I just don't get why people like him, yet turn around and hate on the original, when they're more or less the same. The problem with the new one is they tried to make him both a sympathetic character and keep what's liked about the original, and to me, it didn't work that well.

Personally, I always thought the originally Broly was stupid. The story surrounding him was garbage, his motivation was stupid, he screamed Kakarot way too much... He was basically every Dragon Ball Z stereotype personified. I feel like the Super version took what little worked from the first Broly movie and made it better. Rather than being just a mindless killing machine on steroids, Super Broly is basically a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type of character, who is actually complex and interesting. Despite being a sympathetic character when he's calm, there's a beast inside, waiting to be unleashed if somebody decides to poke the bear.

I also found it funny how Goku had to ask Broly to call him Kakarot this time around.

What exactly did the new Broly say once he started fighting Goku and Vegeta ? not a single word. If you don't like the original Broly for not talking, then why does modern Broly get a pass ? Speaking of motivation, what exactly was modern Broly's ? he fights because daddy tells him to, what an Oscar worthy plot point.

But they made it work, which is proven by not only his ability to stand the test of time, but even be recognized by Toriyama himself.

There's nothing complex about him, he's just as straight forward as every other DB villain introduced since day one. In terms of being interesting, he's a step above Jiren, but that's as much as I'm willing to give him.

Never mind the fact no one pokes him, he just freaks out like the original did, the only difference is that Koyama knew the kind of character he wanted, while Toriyama was trying to have his cake and eat it too.

It is like preferring robocop than the terminator, none of them has many dialogues.

but in what little he says I can prefer the human aspect of murphy and you see in his words.

I dunno if that's a fair comparison. Just going by the first movies. Robocop is very much a social commentary on the increasing militarization of US police and the takeover of corporate plutocracy in an era of increasing wealth disparity. While, yes, the fact that Murphy later remembers who he is is a part of that, the story is essentially a cautionary tale about how Robocop shouldn't exist. Terminator in the first movie was basically just a monster sent by a big mostly-unseen entity into the past to act as an obstacle for the heroes (and arbiter of self-fulfilling prophecy). The context creates a completely different space for him to occupy in the narrative, while Broly between the original film and the new one occupies pretty much the same role.

The new one is still better though, because as long as his in-fight dialogue is basically worthless, we can judge them solely on the type of person they are out of fights. New Broly doesn't have a lot of lines, but he's kind of this weird timid giant who is trapped in a situation beyond his control, and his rage is almost like a weird disability that he doesn't understand and others want to exploit. That changes once Freeza kills his dad, an entirely understandable reason to freak out, while old Broly's motivation, no matter how you spin it, is dumb. In fights, I'd almost prefer he doesn't speak as of right now, since his uncontrollable power would seemingly overwrite any sensible ability to form coherent thoughts, and if those thoughts are going to be the deviantart-tier edgy nonsense from the first movie that completely destroys any idea of Broly being a victim and Paragus being the bad guy, I'd call it an acceptable loss.

Did I say that I didn't like original Broly because he didn't talk? No. I said I didn't like that he repeated the phrase "Kakarot" every five seconds. Imagine if in the early MCU movies, every time Hulk broke something, he'd say, "Hulk smash!" Would that have been preferable to the roars and growls he made in the movies? No. Same here. No dialogue is preferable to one phrase being used over and over and over.

Old Broly is memorable because of his design. That's it. Nobody misses the old story, because it was stupid and forgettable. They just like him because he's a big, vicious, mindless killing machine. And he's still that in the new movie. Now if you prefer his old look with the gold necklace, armbands, etc, fair enough. Although I'd argue Broly's new look fits his backstory better. Old Broly looks like royalty, while Super Broly looks like a wildboy.

Paragus' motivation in the old movie doesn't really make sense. I mean, sure, they tried to kill his son, but he and his son were the only ones to survive the explosion on Planet Vegeta. Broly takes him to a new planet of weaklings, which they conquer, and they live like kings. What was left to be mad about? New Paragus doesn't even know about his planet's destruction, so when he's stuck on a barren wasteland for 30 years, it makes sense he'd still harbor a grudge against the Saiyan royal family, even if his anger does end up being misdirected at the younger Vegeta. Speaking of Vegeta, that's another thing they fixed. Originally, Vegeta was left on the sidelines, cowering while Broly focused on Goku, the source of Broly's "trauma." In the new movie, Paragus sicks Broly on Vegeta first, and Goku only taps in later because...well, he's Goku, and he always has to be the hero in the end.

If you really prefer the original Broly over the new one, are you sure it isn't just nostalgia goggles causing you to prefer the way things used to be? I mean, I grew up with the original Broly, and I struggle to think of a single thing the original did better.

The fact that he stabbed his baby son.

I completely agree with Vegeta, his role in the original movie was always a black spot on his record that this one thankfully fixed.

I never cared that much about the original Broly movie. Don't get me wrong, I think it's one of the better original 13 Z movies, but that's not saying much considering how low the bar is set (with the exception of M13). When it comes to Super Broly, I think it's overall a good movie (far better than RF), just not a necessary one, as it doesn't do enough different from the original Movie 8.

I liked both versions of Broly. I don't know why it's always a competition within the fan base because you can still enjoy both for different reasons. The original Broly was evil and ruthless while DBS Broly was more primal since he lost control and doesn't talk at all in LSSJ. In the first movie, he was able to talk and threaten them before he was only able to yell Kakarot in the second movie. I do think being written by Toriyama helps because I read a fanfic years ago a about a tragic Jekyll and Hyde inspired Broly and every time Broly is stronger than his movie counterpart it's considered "wanking" or a Broly fanboy regardless of what kind of story they're trying to write for him. I'm glad Toriyama was behind that decision to make him this powerful so that fans wouldn't mind and give the story a chance. Broly is strongest there is 8) .

I’m in the minority that legitimately enjoys DBZ Movie 8 Broly than dbs Broly a long shot. Only thing the remake has over the original for me is pretty art and animation.

I also very much prefer Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan over Dragon Ball Super: Broly. As I consider the original Dragon Ball Z Manga,Anime, and Movies to be infinitely superior to Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', the Dragon Ball Super Manga, Anime, Movie, and especially the Promotional Anime of Super Dragon Ball Heroes.

Although I agree classic DB is far superior to modern DB, I think the BOG movie is just as good as the classics, and fits right in with the original.

I do agree but is there a need to be that specific? Modern Dragon Ball or Post-BoG would get the point across without having to name each release :P

I think a lot of fans have unrealistic expectations to be honest. This isn't really exclusive to DBS and it applies to all recent revivals/sequels of classic series that ended years ago. Expecting any of them to have growth and development for the established characters comparable to the original completed series is unlikely to happen especially when the author is no longer in their prime. We might get fan service, interesting new characters and interactions but that's mostly it.
