English video interviews with Toriyama's first editor:all up

Post by sangofe » Fri Jan 23, 2015 4:30 pm

Enjoy. I did the initial translation from french and the timing. Vegard Aune/ Lord_Starfish translation checked. Derek has edited part 6-7 and will go over 1-5. There might be minor changes to the scripts. All the sripts will be shared in this very topic and I hope that it's something Kanzenshuu can use on their webpage.

Great work Sangofe  It's pretty interesting how Toriyama was considered the "uncrowned emperor" for all those years. Dragon Ball is really awesome and I'm glad to be a fan of it.

So cool! X3
The publishing industry is interesting. I like how Torishima was impressed enough to push for him. I can only imagine what that Star Wars parody of Toriyama's was like.
I look forward to the continuation of this project. :3

Wow, Torishima really does look like Dr Slump's Dr. Mashirito. XD You really can tell Toriyama borrowed his face.

Thanks for these subtitles Sangofe. I might have to make some adjustments to Dragon Ball Culture Volume 1 after watching the full series. Video 1 has an interesting alternative on his story of discovering Toriyama that makes me tempted to alter the story already.

Video 2 is set to private, by the way.

Keep up the good work.

This is so interesting; and it really gives me hope for F's script knowing Torishima endorsed it because getting to watch these interviews he seems really knowledgeable.

Video 2 was so informative. The part that was new to me is that Torishima-san says that he's the one who taught Toriyama how to layout his panels (koma-wari). This comes at a perfect time for me, since I'm writing about that exact topic right now in Dragon Ball Culture Volume 3. Thanks for posting the video. Looking forward to the others.

Chuquita and DerekPadula: would you guys be willing to do some sort of editing/quality checking of the subtitles? I'm asking because I think I think the flow could be even better than what it currently is, since English's my third language after Norwegian and French. Third part coming any minute...

Edit:
Part 3's done.

I could do that, as my way of saying thanks for your help. But let's wait until all 7 are up because I don't have the time right now.

Besides, it's almost unnecessary. I'd say about 99% of the translation is spot on, and it reads well. I would never have guessed that English was not your native language.

The video's English reads naturally. I agree it looks fine.
My time is also limited/spotty atm. I don't know if the time is there for me because I don't know how much spare time I'll have vs how long it would take. I'm probably a maybe right now.

Yeah, I think the only issue I caught was changing 'otou-san' and 'okaa-san' as 'parents'. Otherwise they're not too shabby.

"Father" and "mother"= parents, right? JulieYBM, if you'd like, I'd welcome you on my little subbing team to perfect these subs :)

They do. It's just something that tripped me up when I was watching.

Part 5 is up for those who want to watch. This time it's what Torishima thinks is Dragon Ball's message:

As a fan of both franchises, I like all those comparisons with Hokuto no Ken. It seems that Dragon Ball got more popular than HnK quite early on in its story. However, "Fist" was probably already after the final arc with Raoh, where the story was getting sloppy (Celestial Emperor arc is still pretty awesome, but Land of Asura, not so much). When I saw one random Shounen Jump magazine on eBay with scans of a few pages, HnK was in it's final arc, while DB was only at Piccolo Daimao.
