I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Nevermind. Just drop it and move on.

There's really no need to be so rude about it, Saiyavenger. You may not have meant anything by it, but the way it looks seems a little "douche-baggy".

I'm not coming down on you, I'm just saying.

And yeah, he's right. It is "Boo".

Kunzait_83 wrote:The whole “pronunciation” argument for the names becomes a moot point though in the end when you simply get down to the fact that ultimately, had the names been better (and more faithfully) romanized, that millions of kids would have probably had no difficulty pronouncing them by the very simple nature of the fact that they’d be constantly HEARING them being properly pronounced by the voice actors within every episode, and would learn simply through that.

The proof is in the pudding. Do you honestly hear that many kids who watched Yu Yu Hakusho or Bleach or Naruto, or ANY anime with Japanese names, struggle with the pronunciation of some of the more “foreign” names from those shows (even though FUNimation semi-butchered Urameshi’s pronunciation)? Hell, in the case of Yu Yu, even the very TITLE itself?

I certainly never have, other than the name “Naruto” itself (but to be perfectly honest, I hear FAR more adults fuck that one up than I do young kids, which is probably saying a lot right there). And “Budokai” doesn’t count, because the marketing constantly massacres that one, and most people just assume on faith that what they hear is how to pronounce it.

But those aside, I’ve heard plenty of wee ones able to pronounce Kakashi, Shikamaru, Kuwabara, Yusuke, Hiei, etc, just fine without batting an eye. And by your rationale davida, just the very sight of a word spelled like “Hiei” should throw their pronunciation abilities completely for a loop. Except it doesn’t, cause the dub they watch demonstrates for them how to say it time and again.

I’m not trying to be combative here, but I think that the whole “making it easier to pronounce” argument is weak, and holds little to no water in light of so many examples that have come after DBZ.

I guess my point is, if pronunciation of foreign sounding names is going to be considered a problem for the English dub of DBZ, then it should also be considered problematic when dealing with any and every other anime that’s ever dubbed. Except it isn’t. Nor should it be. And if it doesn't have to be an issue for YYH, Naruto, Bleach, or whatever the hell else it is the kids today are currently watching, then I see no reason why DBZ should be any different.
Yu Yu is fairly straight forward. I am by no means saying that all foreign names are difficult to pronounce. But I definitely believe that some are because I've had experience with them myself. I had difficulty pronouncing Kuririn smoothly when I first saw and heard it. That's just a fact. Does that warrant a name change? No. An alternate, but valid, romanization? Sure, why not?

Often times when I watch anime, when the names are Japanese, I have to make a conscious effort to remember the names. I just finished watching Cromarte High School, and the only characters names that I can remember is Mechazowa and Yutaka Takanuchi. I'm largely unfamiliar with Japanese (although being a member of this forum, I've learned a lot. Mostly from Herms, lol), and these names just don't come naturally to me.

I'm not saying that it's okay to change names, I'm just saying that I understand the reasoning. It's not because they're trying to disrespect the material (that would be ridiculous it's their bread and butter), it's to prevent any confusion or disdain from non-anime fans. People are ignorant, they write things off (myself included); it doesn't take much for one to decide that he or she hates something.

This is all coming from someone who's fairly new to anime. I apologize if I sound foolish, but I'm trying to offer an outsiders point of view. I don't think that it's just okay to rename characters. I do think that when creating a dub, it is important to respect and stay true to the spirit of the original show. I can't change what FUNimation did to DBZ, but I'm not going to pretend that I don't like their dub either. To me, the dub is just as much its own property as the Japanese version. Had I known all of this before I got so attached, maybe things would have turned out differently.

Pokémon. Not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but for the most part, a competent and accurate dub, where the only member of the main cast to keep their Japanese name is a yellow mouse. And the dub does not suffer at all for having names like "Ash Ketchum", "Dawn", "May" or "Brock" instead of "Satoshi", "Hikari", "Haruka" and "Takeshi" or animals named "Squirtle", "Treecko" and "Piplup" instead of "Zenigame", "Kimori" or "Potchama". (Although, Piplup's English voice kinda sucks compared to the awesomeness of Potchama's.)

(It does however suffer from the fact that the amount of the original BGM kept varies from episode to episode and that they seemingly won't release bilingual DVDs even though it's totally possible as the show is generally uncut most of the time. :?)

Honestly, that is the only thing that has kept me from buying Pokémon DVDs over the years… though I’m sure they sell just fine anyway.

Well, the R4 Australian releases have entire 52 episode seasons for a mere $50 each, so I've actually bought most of those. >_>

But only 'cause they're so dirt cheap. I wouldn't pay any kind of normal price for a dub only release. :P

And back to topic, what are your favorite puns?

There was a pun in the Arabic dub that I realy liked and forgot to mention it...

Namu, In the Arabic dub, his name was "Mundy"

Mundy is a very well known dish in the Arabian Penisula, and especially in Yemen and KSA, usually cooked by Indians

Image

It's a dish of yellow steamed rice, with grilled beaf, chicken or fish along with some spices.

Who's name is that anyways?

(Yes, I really am too lazy to Wikisearch it.)

Ah yeah, I remember him. His voice is one of those rare things I can actually hate on Funimation for. Dear lord...

As for the pun, I can't find anything.

It's from the Buddist chant "Namu-Amida-Butsu", which means "mindfulness of the Buddha"

It was revealed in the recent 'Super Exciting Guide' Character Edition. It is a rearrangement of 'Akuma', Japanese for devil, as 'Maaku' is romanized as Mark.
