Dragonball Meet in NYC
Yet another EDIT: DBZ Meet in NYC is CANCELED! I repeat, the meet is NOT happening. Unfortunately we did not stir up enough people to make the meet worth attending. But I will give it another shot at the end of spring next year.
---
EDIT: Please say whether you will attend the NYC DBZ Meet even if you've already replied before.
Suggested date: October 17
Suggested venue: Kinokuniya 1073 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY (Second Floor Cafe)
Suggested time: 2 PM - 5 PM
Again for those you who are seriously interested in coming, please let me know what you think about the time and date. In a few days I'm going to post an official thread about the DBZ Meet.
----
Have anyone ever wondered about setting up a Dragonball Meet? "Meets" have been getting really popular these days, for instance there have been Deviantart Meets in nyc, comic book meets (not the conventions), and even Meets for headphone enthusiasts.
I've been thinking about this for a very long time considering that Dragonball doesn't exactly have the world's smallest fansbase, maybe its possible to gather just a small group of dragonball fans in one place for couple of hours maybe more.
Now I've never set up a meet before; I've only join small groups to hang out at local conventions like the Big Apple Con or the NYC comic con but of course I'm not talking about meet a con. Maybe a small group can meet up in a nice public place, like a park or a cafe and talk Dragonball (or maybe our feelings - kidding). It would be like the forum here, but we would be face to face and much more afraid to say mean things to each other...among other things.
I don't know how people would feel about this so I would like to hear what people think about it first.

What's the difference between a meet and a convention?
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?
Sometimes, I tweet things
We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

Conventions cost money. Meets, depending on where, might not. Also, no comic store tables in sight.
If I were on the east coast I'd be down - but I'm not.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Ha Ha! I live in Pennsylvania! And going to NY wouldn't really be a problem. Just a train ride!
Only problem is, how would I do it... no way to drive myself. No clue what my Parents would say if I was going to NY for a Japanese TV show.

Next quest: Start collecting Dragon Ball Super Blu-Rays whenever season sets get released. Also the Super Manga!

I'd be up for it if it was organized to the point where I could be sure my train tickets/day off from work would be worth it. Like if there was a solid place to meet, a way to recognize each other and not wander around aimlessly, and a way to know more than two people would be there.

I'm glad to see there's some interest! Now, I'm not going to go so far as to suggest a place (or places) a small group would meet at yet, since this is still about gauging interest. If we can get more folks to come in and claim some serious interest we could get something going; throw out some actual places to meet (say, a spot in Saint Marks like the always sweet Crif Dogs), and begin to throw around some dates to vote on (obviously on a weekend).
Good thoughts and we can definitely get down to those a little later. Again if we can get several more people with an expressed interest in a meet, then we can really get down to setting up the basics for the whole thing.Velasa wrote:I'd be up for it if it was organized to the point where I could be sure my train tickets/day off from work would be worth it. Sadly, Indiana is a ways away from New York.

I think it's a great idea.
Of course, the problem right now is that the weather is getting cooler. It would probably be a better idea to arrange something "sooner" than "later" 'cuz no-one really likes wandering around the city when it's freezing and windy (as it tends to get).
Kinokuniya (1073 Avenue of the Americas; 40th/41st) and Book-Off (14 East 41st) would be great places to hit, and are just on the opposite side of Bryant Park / the library from each other.
I really have no time to arrange something right now, but if other people want to do so, I might come on up...

A convention is an official, sponsored event, I think, such as Otakon. A meet is just a small number of guys/friends meeting up to hang out.Herms wrote:What's the difference between a meet and a convention?
And I'd be glad to partake this, but I live in Tennessee so I doubt I can. It will be fun reading about what you guys do, though.

Yeah, Kinokuniya would be a great place to meet. I love that store. On the second floor next to their awesome Manga section, they have a little cafe with tables and such to sit at, if we wanted to chill and discuss stuff... haha, or whatever we're supposed to do at a DB Meet.
Anyway, if this works out it could be pretty awesome.
