The Dark Secrets of the Arabic dub

Post by SHINOBI-03 » Sat Oct 10, 2009 6:09 am

Yesterday, was my 21st birthday.

Today, is my 1 Year Anneversary in this forum.

And for this, I'll tell you something really special and worthy for the day..

Over the last year, I talked about the Arabic dub with the DB & DBZ DVD releases and the voices, but now...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

The Dark Secrets of the Arabic dub!!

I'll spill the beans...

I'll say it all...

I'll hide NOTHING!!

I'm going to tell you all about the most horrendous, terrible, lousiest, worst re-writes of the Arabic dub that no one think they could do this to one of the most famous anime the world have ever know in history-

Image

Ok, I got you...

Before reading further:

Please keep in mind that even us ((the Arabic fans of the series)) did not like what they did for the show in anyway. We hated what they missed with and how they ruined it and spoiled our good time with it with all the unnecessary re-writes.

We are not the fans who shout out loud saying the dub is better than the original. Don't flame us and make fun of us. If you want to hate someone about the shitty dub, go for the dubbing company only and not all the Arabs.

Do I make myself clear? :x

Alright then, here we go...

"Hey, my friend!!"

The show has just started and we get ourselves a lousy re-write.

Raditz, is Goku's friend!!

I don't know what's with this change... did they mistranslated "Aniki" for something else?! Or they thought children will kill their own brothers if they kept it as it was?!

-----------------------------------------

"A family plan!!"

In the dub, not only they made Kami Piccolo's grandfather, but he also trained him in order for both of them to take over the world!!

Even Enma made a comment about this!!

But here's the strange thing: Kami trained Piccolo for his ((Kami)) own ambetions, and yet, he taught him afterword to be gentle and peaceful and to protect the world...!!

Even I didn't understand what's going on in his mind  ...!!

-----------------------------------------

"Stupid attack re-names"

Well, it's not that bad, but there's no single attack that got the exact name as the Japanese version nor got an accurate translation of it.
  • - Kamehameha: Certian Death Energy
    - Genki Dama: Certain Death Energy ((Same as the Kamehameha))
    - Makankosappo: Special Cannon ((I smell the dub in this one  ))
    - Masenko: Gohan's Blast
    - Kienzan: Spinning Fan ((First time)) - Spiral Saw ((Second Time))
    - Kikoho: Thunder Power, LIGHTNING ((Sounds like an RPG magic attack  ))
    - Taiyoken: Concaved Mirror Beam
    - Rougafufuken: Hungry Wolf Attack
    - Sokidan: Directed Energy
    - Kaioken: Pyro Attack ((up to two times)) - Great Neptune Attack ((Three times and beyond))
I would love to hear "Kamehameha" from the voice actor, but... he is dead  .

-----------------------------------------

"Another Brilliant Scientist!!"

Do they have to make every member of Goku's family a "brilliant scientist" or what?!

Early in Dragon Ball, Yamcha asked about Goku's Nyoibo, and Goku said:

"It was made by my Grandfather who was a brilliant scientist!!"

It's just ironic

-----------------------------------------

"Heros Never Dies!!"

I don't know how other dubs handled it, but in the Arabic dub, if a characters dies in a battle but seen again like Goku & friends, it's not concidered dead. While in the other hand, a villain who died and never seen again like Raditz & Nappa, are dead.

Also, the Other World is not labeled as the After Life. Instead, it's a Galactic Martial Arts School with Enma as the Headmaster  .

Princess Snake was re-written to be an instructior who got orders from Enma to test Goku if he got to her place. :P

Oh, and the halos are now a "Novice" mark.

-----------------------------------------

It's MATH TIME!!

So... Goku reach's Kaio's planet, and he gets a test...

Kaio doesn't ask him to tell jokes, instead... he gives a math test!!

Now... what's wrong with telling jokes, people?! Will it ruin our minds?! Is it a taboo?! Children are not supposed to tell jokes between each other?!

I just... don't get them with this one... "Sure, let's make cartoons educational for the children, blah blah blah"

-----------------------------------------

Now... I'll give you the big ones that ruined the series for us...

Well... I'm not sure if I should say...

Should I?

Should I?

Should I?

Image

Damn...... I don't think I'll like this...

.
.
.
.
.
.

"It's Not Real!!"

The first re-write ever in the series.

Goku's tail and the other Saiyans... are artificial...!!
Maybe the writers thoght it would be offending to have humans with monkey tails and the whole Darwin's theory of evolution where the monkey is the ancesstor of the human...

But this is a show where a dog is the king of the world and dinosaurs and aliens! What's so strange with having a boy with a tail?

And, who never heard of babies born with tails, or an extra head, or one arm? :?

-----------------------------------------

"I summon you forth!!"

I think this one is already known for some here...

Saiyans do not transform into the Great Apes... They summon the *cough* Gorillas *cough* out of nowhere!!

Maybe it's because for same reason as the above change... but it's stupid when everyone can tell there's somthing wrong when a giant gorilla wearing the same clothes as Vegeta with the same damage on it...!!

I don't know what's the dub has with transforming... it's all fiction for crying out loud!! It's like they say 5 + 5 is 0 whe we all know it's 10.

To bring it even further, Freeza is not afraid of Super Saiyans, he is afraid of the giant herd of gorillas!!

And I don't know how they will handel it in the new dub when they reach that point. :!: :!:

-----------------------------------------

Now... are you ready for the biggest WTF change in the whole dub?!

Are you?!

"Dragon Balls...?!!!!!!!"

Here it is...

The moment of truth...

The Dragon Balls... In "Dragon Ball".........

Don't... have... a Dragon...!!

:( :) :D  Good one, right?! Right?!

Umm... no...!!

The big WTF like I've said, the balls do NOT grant wishes nor have a Dragon to begin with...!!

This is what we all hate in this dub... how come it's called "Dragon Ball" when you don't even show us the Dragon?!

So, wait... what do they do with them in the first place? Why do they collect them?!!!

Two things:
  • In Dragon Ball: You collect them and sell them for a very high price and get to be the richest in the world!!
In Dragon Ball Z: When the seven balls are gathered together, it emits a high amount of energy that it can heal and bring back who is in the *cough* Galactic Martial Arts School to Earth, or to make the indevidual the strongest most powerfull Mother F@#% guy in the Universe.
If you asked me, I would've preferred the Z re-write over the first one... but still, Shenlong doesn't appear at all!

I swear... if I ever got the chance to meet the writers of the dub, I'm going to ask them this question:

"HOW COME IT'S OK FOR ALADDIN TO GET A GENIE FROM A LAMP AND NOT OK TO HAVE A DRAGON FROM BAAAAAAALLS?!! THEY BOTH GRANT WISHES FOR ANYONE, RIGHT?! WHY ONE IS OK AND THE OTHER NOT? HUH?!

There... I said it all... Now...

What do you think about our lousy dub company that goes by the name of "Venus"?

Are you thinking the Arabs are stupid?
Please keep in mind that even us ((the Arabic fans of the series)) did not like what they did for the show in anyway. We hated what they missed with and how they ruined it and spoiled our good time with it with all the unnecessary re-writes.

Don't be jackass' about it.

Thanks, good read.

Killed some time during my midnight shift!

Didn't they also cut Bulma from some of the scenes?

Very good read, had me very interested, but you mentioned a "New Dub" in there.

is DBZ being Redubbed in Arabic?

Well, I was going for script re-writes than visual cuts because the scripts is the most important thing.

There were some rumors going on lately about continuing the dub from where they left out originally, but I don't know if it's confirmed yet or not.

I wish there would be a new revised dub that makes it closer to the original, but all they care is money money money.

My GOD... That's just insane... two dubs with two different brilliant scientists? Goku's family just keeps on getting smarter.

Oh, they must have also re-written that in your country as well....

Ok, I know it's a typo, sorry for being an ass :P. But yea, those changes seem a bit excessive. Some are just really far fetched... and I always thought we had it bad here in the USA.

Wow that is just horrible.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I never knew that the dub was this bad. But hey at least Piccolo isn't Big Green.

"Certain death" makes it sound like a translation of hissatsu waza, a generic term for special attacks and finishing moves that literally means "sure-to-kill/certain death technique".
- Kaioken: Pyro Attack ((up to two times)) - Great Neptun Attack ((Three times and beyond))
"Great Neptune Attack" probably comes from the fact that the god Neptune is sometimes called Kaiou in Japanese (海王, Sea-King, while the planet Neptune is 海王星/Kaiousei, Sea-King-Planet), a homonym for DB's Kaiou (界王, World-King).

Wow that sucks! Have you watched the original in Japanese (with sub titles) or the English dub? I mean it sounds like what's the point of watching the Arabic dub cause they changed EVERYTHING!

This sounds like they tried to do like Robotech and failed miserably where Robotech succeeded. Or did popularity eclipse anger at the show, like many US dubs of some anime?

Well, they did rename Kaio to "Neptune" in the dub. Propably a mistranslation like you explained.

WAAAAA!!! OK, OK, I'll Watch it!!

((After watching it))

Like how Bellemy was sent to a dungen by Arlong and how Laboon turned into an ice mountain by the magic called "E&RW" ((Edit & Re-Write)), The lightning bolts from the sky stroke the balls and affected their energy. And by that, it made the balls scater and fly away. And from out of nowhere... Oolong got panties on his head! :?

Hah, so they left the panties nevertheless?
I guess that they missed putting burka's on the female characters too.
Don't get me wrong, I may be from Sweden, but I was born in Iran, where they do these kinds of censoring all the time, and name changes that are obscure at the least.
I understand these censorings, and I can only feel sorry for the Arabic fans.

From the writing, I really liked your pictures that you added. It gave the thread a special feeling, y'know, one of those threads that you'll never forget.

I think it's nice to have a fan from Arabia here, and it gives this forum lots of valuable information, now when we like to discuss different dubs.

I may buy some movies from Sweden myself and dissect them to every small part in winter, myself.

Maybe in the future, you'll get a new cast and a new, fresh dub.
