It's kind of cool how some people pick up on stuff that others don't.

Watching it on Toonami back in the Moltar days...
My first impression: "Whoa, look at that guy in the orange! He's so fast!"
Later in the episode: "Holy crap! He just took down the big guy with red hair with a single elbow!"
Later still: "How are the red and blue guys flying through him? Wait.. no way! He's moving so fast that you can't see him dodge! Awesome!"
At the end: "I'm totally watching this tomorrow!"
I then went outside to train and worked on body movement drills and and thrusting elbows for about an hour or two. The next day, it cycled back to the first episode as Season 3 hadn't even been announced yet.

My first impression was in like 2001 or 2002 I just remembered it now but it wasn't the Super Saiyan 3 episode where Goku first transforms into it, it was that episode where Gohan fires a Kamehameha at Buu's shell. I remember thinking "Is it that frustrating just standing there?" I was new to the series so I didn't know they did that a lot. I also Remember in the Super Saiyan 3 Goku episode (titled Super Saiyan 3?! by FUNimation) The second time King Kai was yelling at Goku to stop my friend asked me why he was telling him to stop and being the second episode I watched (I didn't know when they came on) I just shrugged. So I guess my first impression was a lot of the Action and that other than Ed, Edd n' Eddy, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo and Courage the Cowardly Dog it was one of the shows I liked on Cartoon Network and not just Z but DB, and yes GT (it's watchable). So those were my first impressions on Dragon Ball.

My VERY first impression of the series? I thought it was like Pokemon for older kids and teenagers. Gimme a break, I was 7 at the time. I also pretty much crafted my own universe for it out of only watching about 4 episodes and 1 movie (Lord Slug), and later wondered why the episodes contradicted my self made universe. Finally, I came to an illogical decision that they were an alternate timeline created when Goku went to the past to kill Slug (There's a long, sad story behind this, but I'd rather not tell it.)
Anyway, I had a long absence from the show after about 3 months of on and off watching. When I was about 12 I started reading the original DB manga out of boredom, and here I am!

Oh, and my first exposure to the manga was when a friend bought Volume 4 to school when I was like 12. I remembered hearing about this arc when Old Timer was talking about the Tenkaichi Budokais before the Cell Games, so unfortunately, I knew Goku was doomed to lose. Didn't stop me enjoying the heck out of it though! I can't say how funny I found crude drawings of a 12 year old's penis at that time, it was shocking and hilarious to me.

I actually wanted to get Chrono Trigger because it looked like Dragon Ball Z to me lol
I was lucky enough to catch it on the WB back in the day during the morning time (not sure if it was Saturday or Sunday). The lucky part was that I caught it right on the first episode. So I got to watch it from the first episode right from the beginning. My initial reaction was, "wow this is cool. I like Cocoa" And the rest is history.

I actually didn't flip past this random show when I was a kid because it looked just like Chronno Trigger. Without that game, I may never have even started in the series.TheGreatness25 wrote:I actually wanted to get Chrono Trigger because it looked like Dragon Ball Z to me
I can't make a complete recollection of my initial memories of watching the series because so much of the exact order is lost in the fog of a decade ago. There were just a bunch of little things that combined to catch me and then there I was, wedged on the couch between my older and younger brother watching this awesome Japanese thing before even doing my homework. And that was a big deal, because we were -always- suppose to do our homework as soon as we got back from school but we hadda make an exception for DBZ. Sometimes we'd even eat dinner in the living room *gasp* on tv trays because DBZ was on and I wasn't gonna miss it.
Another very early memory of the series was the episode with Gohan's dinosaur, one of the first batch I saw. Before that I'd seen people fight and get hurt and bad stuff happen yeah, but it was this ep that really hit me- because this wasn't a fighter guy, this was somebody's fun little animal friend and he got eaten. You saw his ribs standing there bleached out under the open sky and I was absolutely shocked. Stuff like this didn't happen in normal cartoons, it just didn't. As I watched Gohan walk off with utmost seriousness as the tears dried from his eyes it really hit me that this was something... special.

It kinda turned out like this around my house. ^^Velasa wrote: and then there I was, wedged on the couch between my older and younger brother watching this awesome Japanese thing before even doing my homework. Of course, the time DBZ started on Toonami happened to be around when we rarely got home in time, since both parents were working til 4:30 or 5 at the earliest.
So yay, VCR~!
Was pretty well the literal first thing we did upon getting home, other than shedding baggage and ... ur... shoes? Sometimes? XD.
'Cept that one time I actually got to stay home while everyone else went somewhere else for an hour or E, and my sister hid the video so I wouldn't watch it before everyone else... except this was actually before it came on. I realized this about halfway through the episode (I actually wasn't going to watch it early! Reallyz!), and... I think I caught the end of it on the cassette, I dunno.
... It was "Upgrade to Super Saiyan". In that stretch where plot actually happened in almost every episode. Though I guess the first half of said episode is yelling and flashbacking...? *shrug*.

First impressions of Dragon Ball
Like a lot of fans here, I was introduced into DBZ before DB, so I had a limited knowledge of Dragon Ball. I wasn't fully aware that it was a series until my sister bought me the first Dragon Ball volume for my 9th or 10th birthday. Scanning through the volume briefly and having a decent knowledge of DBZ at the time, I expected that this would be more back-to-basics fighting--and I was right. When I began reading it, yeah, I was a bit taken aback at seeing Goku's dong in the first chapter and later on Bulma's tits. It quickly became clear to me that Dragon Ball was a more light-hearted series than Dragon Ball Z.
I thought Dragon Ball was pretty cool at the time. Not as interested in it as DBZ, but nonetheless intriguing.
First impressions of Dragon Ball Z
Well, I must have been 8 or 9...I forget. But when I came across footage of it on the television, as a typical 8/9-year-old, I exclaimed in my head, "Wow! Big musclebound yelling dudes with spiky golden hair and explosions! Must watch this!"
And I did.
First impressions of Dragon Ball GT
My first impressions of GT was that it was pretty bad. Not far off there, then.
