FUNi Remastered "Double Features" vs Dragon Box
I've seen a lot of comparisons between FUNimation's "remastered" season sets and the Dragon Boxes. However I'm having trouble finding any comparisons between FUNi's remastered movie releases and Dragon Box: The Movies. Does anyone know of any or have the ability to make one yourself?
Also, I realize both the remastered sets and the Dragon Box are widescreen. Are the US releases framed the same way as the Dragon Box? In other words, Did FUNimation crop their 4:3 prints in the same areas in the frames as Toei originally did?
Thanks.

I'm going off of memory here, so don't go with what I'm saying 100%, but I think they were cropped just a tad less than the Toei Box. and some of the animation errors are still slightly visible (IE, that time they didn't finish drawing Gohan's Masenko) but it's not bad at all, and from what I've been privy to, the movies were mastered on actual higher quality Cinema grade film stock, so those masters were much higher quality than the TV series, so thusly FUNi's generational masters were much better, and thus the "Remaster" process that caused so many problems in the Earlier Season sets didn't have nearly the same dastardly effect on the movies.
IE: The Remaster of the movies looks more like the later seasons moreso than the first.
Also, I haven't seen anything on the Blu-ray releases, were they any good?

I'll try to make some comparison shots today, so keep a close eye on this topic.
EDIT: I ran into some trouble while trying to take the screens. MPC and VLC dont display the video in the correct resolution and i wasnt able to fix this, and WMP doesnt need FFDShow for decoding DVD's so i'm not able to use the screengrab function.
Do you guys know a good way to take screens?

Sure do! Thanks to godofchaos.Shadow-Link wrote:Do you guys know a good way to take screens?
Edit: Except for the 640x480 part, obviously.

EDIT: I did not make this image.
(Dragon Box) (Remastered)
I think FUNi's had more footage on the tops, bottoms, and sides.

I made some comparisons from DBZ Movies 1, 6, and a few from 8. They don't display the extra footage on the FUNi Double Features as well as the Gogeta picture above, but they were made to show the differences in color between the DragonBoxes and the Double Features.
Hope these are helpful to you!

I made a thread a long time ago posting screencaps from the first 6 remastered movies. We didn't get much Dragon Box pics, but you can get a good idea of how the double features are:

It is not there. You can not find what you're looking for if you type it out directly. On a side note, I did find a thread that I was looking for a month ago. Completely unrelated search terms seem to yield the best results.

They look a lot better than the single releases. One thing that bothers me, though, is the brightness. The characters have the same ghostly white skin as the season sets. Still, I guess I'll be getting some of these. It'll probably be a long time before the movies Dragon Box comes out in the US anyway.

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but a while back I made a side-by-side moving comparison of the original FUNimation and Dragon Box version of DBZ movie 13. It's been uploaded on YouTube, and since then it's had a lot of controversial things said on the page...

An interviewer asks, "The soundtrack in Sonic 3 has become legendary. Is it true that you worked with Michael Jackson on it?" Takashi Iizuka kills all of our hopes and dreams by replying, "You know, those are just rumors, and SEGA does not want to say anything about them. So they will forever be just rumors..." WHY!?

I've been meaning to do a mini-dissection for a while since not many people here seem to own the Blu-Ray releases or have a BD drive in their PC. They are a step up from the DVD double features, however the extra clarity makes all of the damage in FUNimation's film masters even more apparent than it was before.DemonRin wrote: Also, I haven't seen anything on the Blu-ray releases, were they any good?
The Trunks and Bardock specials (presumably due to being telecined from a 16mm source instead 35mm like the movies) look especially bad though.
