If I could add more divisions to the Dragonball series, I would. To me, it would help if the various story arc groups were presented as seperate because (a) it would get rid of the stupid Z subtitle and (B) it would embrace how disjointed the series feels at times instead of trying to ignore it.
Here are my divisions:
Eps 1-13: Goku's Journey
Eps 14-28: The Strongest Under the Heavens
Eps 29-83: Trials of the Dragon
Eps 84-122: Demon King Chronicle
Eps 123-153: Clash of the Gods
Z Eps 1-107+Bardock Special: Saiyan Battle Story
Z Eps 108-117: The Usurper of Kami
Z Eps 118-194+Trunks Special: The Prophet-Boy's War
Z Eps 195-291: Purest Evil
GT eps 1-40+Goku Jr. Special: The Ultimate Quest
GT eps 41-64: Goku's last battle

To get rid of the "Z" I would simply call the entire thing Dragonball and keep the arcs as they are. Splitting it more just feels very... oldschool FUNi. I like how Kanzentai has it:
