Are there supposed to be pupils or not?

In the manga, when Goku goes SSJ3, he has pupils. However, later on when Gotenks goes SSJ3, his eyes are the normal, without pupils. Later when Goku goes to fight Kid Buu, he no longer has pupils in any of the panels in which he's a SSJ3.

In the anime, Goku always has pupils while Gotenks never has them. In GT, Goku suddenly lacks them in his chibi SSJ3 form.

In video games, Goku has always had them in his character model up until Shin Budokai. Vegeta's Raging Blast character model has them, but his artwork doesn't.

So which is it? Officially are there supposed to be pupils in the SSJ3 form, or is this like electricity at SSJ1, in that it comes and goes without reason?

I can speak for Gotenks, but I like to think that the SS(J)3 Goku used against Fat Boo was the most "pure" form because he was dead and didn't have to draw upon his actual life energy to use it. Then, when he was alive and fighting against Kid Boo, it was a lot more taxing on him....dunno why that would remove his pupils, though.

I'd say that SSJ3 has pupils. Goku was designed that way for his first appearance as SSJ3. Why Gotenks didn't have them? Trunks' eyes might have to do something about it.

I don't know what you mean, but every time I see a Super Saiyan 3, they have pupils. Maybe we're reading a different manga or something.

So all of these are from the Viz release of DBZ Volume 26, and one originally from the first Daizenshuu but I used the one already on Daizex so I could get away with being lazy and cut the scanning short.

These obviously aren't all of the images of SSJ3 Goku's face in the volume, but I think you get the idea. Look through your DBZ 26 (or DB 42) and check out SSJ3 Goku's eyes. He lacks the pupils throughout the entire volume.

He has pupils when he briefly turns Super Saiyan 3 just before Boo lost Gotenks's fusion power, and he was alive then.

I'd accept the notion that it was simply an error. Toriyama could've simply forgot to add them, much like he forgot to draw tails for post Saiya-jin Arc Gohan and Vegeta, as well as Goten and Trunks.

If you look at SSJ3 Gotenks right before getting absorbed by Buu, he has pupils too.

Is there a scan from when Goku goes Super Saiyan 3 the first time? Unfortunately I don't have the book, I only have 25 and 26. In both volumes neither Gotenks or Goku have pupils. Oh wait, there is one shot with Gotenks but I think that was just to illustrate his shocked expression. It's only one panel of the whole book. Is it possible that the pupil thing is a Toei design and not Toriyama's idea?

I guess I always figured the pupils were included for the more dramatic moments (perhaps in addition to or when they coincide with close-ups), and otherwise disregarded or forgotten. (Like so many other details -- generally at least.) That would at least cover the "Goku first shows off SSJ3" and the "Gotenks being absorbed" moments?
But I hadn't really given it a lot of thought...so...

He definitely had pupils the first time around.

Well, in the chapters they weren't black. On the chapter cover they are grayed in, like his blue shirt.

When SS3 next appears it's Gotenks, who doesn't have pupils in the chapters or on the covers.

However, the second time SS3 Gotenks appears, he does have little black dot pupils.

I'm assuming Goku was the only one meant to have them and Mr. Toriyama just didn't care much at the end of the series and forgot to add them.
