Asperger's Syndrome and Dragon Ball

Post by DerekPadula » Sun Sep 19, 2010 12:56 am

Are you or do you know a person with Asperger's Syndrome who has a focus on Dragon Ball?

People with Asperger's Syndrome tend to have difficulty in social interactions, but are extremely intelligent or focused on a particular niche in life. This can be things like geology, trains, cars, or a particular film, video game or anime.

I have heard of a girl in Los Angeles who is completely impossible to communicate with under normal circumstances, but when you mention Dragon Ball she faces your direction and begins to listen intently. Everything she wants to discuss has to do with Dragon Ball, and she can quote each episode with precision, along with cite off statistics and arbitrary facts, such as power levels and dates of birth.

And yes, the description I just provided may be applicable to many of us, but I'm specifically looking for people with a diagnosed syndrome. I would like to speak with them in more detail for research regarding The Dao of Dragon Ball book.

Thank you.

I focus on Dragon Ball more than anything, but not to the point of it making me anti-social.

Edit: Not that I have anything like Asperger's Syndrome. ^.-;;

Interesting.... I've been diagnosed with AS... how severe it is, I can't say. All I know is I'm very shy, and don't socialise well. But when it comes to talking to things I love, eg: Dragon Ball, movies, comics, etc, I can talk forever. I guess I could say I substitute things like Dragon Ball collecting and such to make up for a lack of real relationships with real people... and I would like to be more outgoing and such, but it's tough. :P

It's a shame, though, since I don't really know anyone who likes Dragon Ball.... I guess that's what brings me here.

I have this syndrome, to an extent. I'm most comfortable when I'm on my own, without other people. Of course I don't want to be all alone in the world or anything like that, but I would never go out to clubs and stuff.

For the past five years or so I have tried to improve my social life, but any real life "friends" I made were idiots who couldn't accept me the way I am and basically stomped me into the ground saying "you're different and weird, so fuck you".

Obviously not everyone is like that, thankfully. I have one very good friend, but my only contact with him is through the internet. I do plan to meet him, perhaps next summer.

Sometimes I've wondered "why am I different", but really I wouldn't have it any other way.
Fuck being popular, I'm happy the way I am(and someday I'll find a girl who'll love me for it :P).

As for DB, people are always very impressed when they see my fanart and, if they recognize it, talk about their own experiences with the series.

I never heard of anything like this before. Did you hear about it in real life, or on the internet?

Well, I have OCD and it tends to take me a while to read through just one volume of the Dragon Ball manga, but it's not really anything that affects my social life. So I don't know if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.

What, you mean like you haven't heard of Asperger's altogether?

Dude, you're an Aussie, you should check out the movie Mary and Max if you're curious... freaking great movie.

I also have OCD, it's horrible. It's put me off reading Dragonball, it could take me up to 3 minutes to read one page. It's the same with any book though, it takes me ages to read things. It's the same on this forum, while reading forum posts, I usually have to read them 2 or 3 times. Really frustrating.

Yeah, it's the same with me too. But, you know, you just try to handle it the best you can, I guess.

I have Asperger's, but it's different for everyone. All I know is, is I love Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z (Hate GT.) I can't state birthday's of the characters nor do I know exact power levels (although that's more because websites keep mangling the real power level numbers)

Fandom's seem to attract a lot of people with AS. Heck, I've heard Satoshi Tajiri (Pokemon's creator) even has it.

My best friend has a low level case of Aspergers, and while I'm a dragonball nut (duh, I'm posting here :P ) - he is not. I've slowly etched him in the direction due to his love of Inuyasha I've sucessfully steered him to Bleach and One Peice in that order. My main roadblock with DBZ is that said friend only watches stuff dubbed, period. But said friend also can't stand the bad dialogue of the DBZ dub (hence his dislike of the series). I'm hoping to use DB and then DB Kai to get him more into it at some point. xD

For anyone really wondering about Aspergers, the best explanation I can do is that their brains are wired very differently. It's sort of like if an oldschool macintosh and any PC were sentient and tried to relate - their OS cores work so differently the social mess is bound to happen. Aspergers wired brains tend to get along fine with one another, the social akwardness comes in that most people don't have Aspergers. Course, that hasn't stopped me from having a best friend with one (and my only "problem" of that sort is clinical depression xD).

I'm not sure if I have Asperger's Syndrome, but I am very shy around most people. The people I tend to talk to the most are my parents, sister, and my close friends. If I do have AS, I guess my "niche" would be Dragon Ball to an extent (being on this site definitely expands your knowledge of Dragon Ball). I also remember dates very well. If someone tells me their birthday, I probably won't forget it for years, even if I no longer interact with them.

Regarding Dragon Ball, I have no friends that are into Dragon Ball like I am, so I guess that's why I'm on here. :)

I have been pretty inactive over the past few days though. I've been burnt out of the forums lately...

I hear you guys. Along with my shyness, I also have a slight case of OCD. Sometimes, it takes me 5-6 hours to finish a volume of Dragon Ball because I re-read some panels over and over again. It's really frustrating.
