Thought I'd comment on a few 'mistakes' thus far in the thread.

How was it underwhelming exactly? Good quality video, good quality audio, some dub lines retouched. What exactly were you expecting?
Paradox295 wrote:It's 16mm film, which means it will be an upscale. The DragonBoxes will still be the best release.
That isn't the way it works with film. Modern productions can use 16mm film and it isn't an upscale... it just doesn't work the way you think it does.

YYH's remaster was done from the Japanese remasters that came out a while back.

This is pointless.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Honestly, I'm not getting this. I'm getting Kai after the Dragon Boxes, I'm getting the Dragon Boxes currently. Do I really need a downgrade from the Dragon Boxes? No thank you.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

What is this, the third time it's been released?

The Remastered Sets were horrible enough, now it's in HIGH DEFINITION.... meh.
Next quest: Start collecting Dragon Ball Super Blu-Rays whenever season sets get released. Also the Super Manga!

Fan of Dragon Ball Z and various other Anime since '98! ^^

uh........

um.......

huh.

Nope, can't seem to find the logic in this one. Maybe... Kai isn't selling as well as Z did and they think releasing Z on blu ray will somehow sell better? As if the typical DB fan knows the difference. This is just fucking bizarre.

Give us Dragon Box za movies damn it.

Saiyan saga has been released:

1. Edited Ocean DVDs
2. Ultimate Uncut Editions
3. Orange Bricks
4. Dragon Boxes
5. Kai I suppose
6. Blu Bricks

Ridiculous.

Press Release wrote:This restored edition also features the original U.S. voice actors as well as the original FUNimation soundtrack – all in lossless Dolby® TrueHD.
So, I can expect Shuki Levy's score with vocal performances by Ian Corlett, Saffron Henderson, Scott McNeil, Brian Drummond, etc.?

But, in all seriousness, this is a fucking dumb idea. We don't need Z to be re-released for like the 3rd time in a row. Let it die for a few years.

Fans think it's a dumb idea, but then fans are a small part of the market.

Orange Bricks sold batshit insanely well; these likely will also.

You don't avoid obvious money making ideas because a small part of the buying audience won't like it.

Not to mention, and let's be honest here -- how does this affect us? We have our release. Anyone who doesn't want this, it doesn't affect them one way or another.

Yeah, that's completely true. But, even though I'm only one fan I think FUNimation should still let Z die for a bit than bring it back once it leaves the public eye. They completely oversaturate and confuse fans by doing the whole "Oh, here's another release! AND IT'S BETTER THAN THE ONE YOU ALREADY HAVE!".

Guys, a reality check might be in order. I know that the people who are generally on this forum regard the orange bricks as satanic, but the vast majority of people do not care. I know that the people who are generally on this forum regard the Dragon Boxes to be a gift from God, but the vast majority of people do not care. Anime News Network, in their review of the first Dragon Box, called it, "Just another re-release," and said that if you already had the orange brick sets, there was no point in getting the Dragon Boxes. I disagree, but it seems like most people share that view, because the orange bricks continue to outsell the Dragon Boxes like crazy.

That alone should be a clear indicator that our opinion is in the minority. This new release is not for us. We already have the Dragon Boxes, so there's no need to get upset over this.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

That's effectively my thoughts on the matter.

We have our release. There is no 'better' release in Japan that this release is keeping us from getting.

This just does not affect anyone who doesn't want this release when you think of it logically.

I guess I'm going to have to, just like in 2007, at least purchase the first volume for review.

'Cuz no-one in their right mind will send me a review copy. Right...?

It's not that I'm upset, it's the whole shock of the series being released *again*.

*Sigh*... It prints money, and I know people will buy them. Can't stop that. :|

Yes... but what the hell is Kai then? Did they not rename it "Z Kai" for the sole purpose of informing the average fan that this is Dragon Ball Z in 1080p on Blu Ray?

I have no idea how well Kai is selling in North America, but I'm guessing this decision to release Z on blu ray proves that it's doing pretty bad.

I'm not exactly emotional one way or another about this. We got the DBox. I really don't care about anything else. The only thing that got a "wat?" out of me was the extremely low episode count. Not sure if fans will buy this volume episodes for $30-$50 a volume. They may just pirate it instead.

The way I read the initial announcement, it seems as if this'll be a new remaster. If that's the case, I'll at least give FUNimation props for not using the Orange Bricks again, even if this is barely a blip on my radar.

Maybe once I see some actual footage I might see about at least grabbing the first volume just for kicks.

It was renamed Z Kai because Dragon Ball Z is a more marketable name in the market than Dragon Ball... and I may be misremembering, but I think that Toei did that, not Funimation.

And I doubt this has anything to do with Kai at all sales wise. One is considered an update/reversion, one is considered the original.

If Kai was selling poorly they likely wouldn't stuff something else in the market at the same time.

I can understand that to an extent, but at the same time, things as big as Dragon Ball Z will continue to be re-released throughout history. With every new improvement in remastering technology, with every new video format, with every new generation, with every slow business period...things get re-released. "Gone With the Wind" was once only shown in movie theaters. Then released to VHS. Then released to an improved version of VHS. Then released to DVD. Then released to Blu-Ray. Hell, when they can re-release DBZ in 3D, they'll do THAT.

Classics are fated to be re-released until the end of time. We just have to decide on a case-by-case basis whether or not it's personally worth it for us. It doesn't sound like this re-release will be.

What gets me is that they're apparently releasing the first one in November...? Okay, right after Dragon Box 7, so there's no overlap there. But what about Kai (which they also release with a Z)? Are they gonna be done with Kai by then? Or are they going to release this side by side with the other Blu-ray version of Gohan's childhood?

Combined with the fact that the Orange Bricks have been marketed as "remastered in HD" for years, and the average schmo sometimes takes that to mean those DVDs actually are HD... I foresee this confusing the fuck out of the layman, and possibly retailers too.

I don't think this has anything to do at all with if Kai is selling well or not. It's just typical product evolution. DBZ hasn't been released on Blu-ray before and of course it'll sell so, the logical thing to do is... put it out on blu-ray. I mean, will it sell better then the Orange Bricks did? Maybe not, but it'll definitely sell. Not bizarre at all. It was only a matter of time.
