People keep saying "if these do well then FUNimation could..." but the truth is that they don't or just go back to what's profitable >> DBZ.

Who believes that telling FUNimation that 16:9 with "modern look" is way better than 4:3 with classic look will make them to spend a ton of money on producing 4:3 with classic look?

This release is very strange beast, its clearly better than OB, i would seen it as budget release (With 17 $ price tag) if DBoxes weren`t out of print.

Here are some comparisons from the season 2 blu rays to what would have been the level sets. The level blu ray screen shots were taken from the remastering featurette found on the level blu rays.

Your essentially seeing the difference between paying $40 for 34 episodes vs paying $17 for 35 episodes. Honestly they don't look as bad as I anticipated they would when compared to the level sets. They look decent for a release that's only costing you 49 cents per episode.

I get more and more depressed when I see comparisons. I can't see how anyone can seriously call these good. The line art is just a washed out blur and the colours are blown out to all hell.

Wouldn't even say it's worth the price.

Not the worst, but it's still unearthly bright. I'm not speaking OH IT'S SO BRIGHT UGSDG, but more-so, how did they even make it do that? No brightness setting on this planet would fix that.

Looks as though FUNimation's best efforts on Level BDs for Namek/Freeza arc wouldn't be enough to remove the low quality that's on the masters they have.

I'm talking about these screens:

http://i1.minus.com/ibfpcxpouOH2du.png
http://i2.minus.com/iULTcFYOQ5U4b.png

I do know these are from an HD trailer because the actual Level 2.1/2.2 never came out but it's pretty accurate.

C'mon FUNimation you've done a shitload of money outta these re-releases of DBZ so I guess you can pay Toei to get the better masters (I'm very happy with DB Saga sets so if they could focus on DBZ HD that'd be fine by me).

I agree with that. For the price difference I can clearly see why Funimation had to change their release plans. It pains me to see the quality of the level sets in comparison to what we currently have but again I think eventually we will get a level set quality release (if not better). God willing....

Thanks for this. I always enjoy hearing Chris Sabat talking about the franchise. One of the few cast members that really understands the franchise and the divided fanbase. His ability to talk about that without getting defensive is quite nice.

I see someone was getting their Chogashu signed. :P

Really enjoyable and interesting interview. Brings a lot perspective.

Did you take a look at all those Level screenshots? They're not that good to be praising. To be getting something better they'd need to have the superior masters which Toei has in possession.

What a waste to be getting it signed by Sabat. *sigh*

It disappoints me every time I see a bunch of people saying how "Sabat's the voice of Dragon Ball Z" or "Sabat is the best!!" when clearly it's not the case. They're delusional but they still like it so I guess it's sorta OK as they're contributing for the franchise.

They do know that there's the original Japanese cast version and a ton of different dubs out there not only the FUNimation dub, right? Who knows maybe they think it's a US/FUNimation show produced.

He seems like a really cool guy. He pretty much openly admitted that the first couple of seasons of the in house dub sucked.

Edit: It's also pretty hilarious when he talked about how Funimation didn't even know the ending of the story because they didn't have anyone that they could ask and he added that if he had tried to ask any hardcore anime fan for help they would have refused because they didn't like Funimation. :D

Have to say, I think they made the right call boosting the saturation. While they may have done too much, the Level set trailer for season 2 always looked rather washed-out to me and - side-by-side with these new sets - it only stands out all the more.

Also, seriously? Someone is delusional because they happen to like the way an English voice actor presents himself in interviews and seems to care about the series beyond it paying the bills?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Someone find me how to contact that female Gogeta cosplayer and I will give you FUNimation's Dragon Box 2. I'm kidding. Don't do that. That's creepy.

Joking aside, that interview was neat. It was very dub focused, but it's kind of cool to see all of this. It always interests me.

I like that he admits that the show (by that, I assume he means the dub) got better with Kai at 15:48-ish. I also like how he talks about DBZ inspiring people to become awesome and how being awesome can be any number of things around 17:23-ish. I think that hits me rather personally because, while I've always been into martial arts, DBZ was the show that made me want to step it up and get really good at it. I see a lot of that drive in other fans' talents (like art, acting, writing, or whatever) as well and it's sort of heartwarming that DBZ can do that for so many people around the world. My aspiration was a bit more literal to the show, but it's just the same as everyone else's passions and it sort of brings people together in that way.

Like it or not, Funimation and their dub brought Dragon Ball Z to bigger fan base than what it would have done should it have never been picked up by them.
