Rank the four major Z arcs from best to worst?

Post by Weejus » Wed Nov 13, 2013 4:22 pm

What's your opinion? (I imagine that this topic has already been made several times so feel free to lock/delete is that is the case)

IMO, Freeza > Saiyan > Cell (haven't watched Buu)

Please allow me to hijack your thread and instead ask the question: were any statistics released about when Dragon Ball was most popular (most watched) in Japan?

Alright but don't let the thread get out of hand like my BoG review thread.

I can't, I just can't :(

Okay. I think my order is Freeza > Saiyan > Cell > Buu. I'm fairly sure Buu comes last for me, but I don't know about the other three, I change my mind a lot.

I find them all equally entertaining. It just depends on my mood which one I would be more inclined to watch at a given time.

Yeah same...I love the amount of fighting in the Freeza and Buu arcs!

This is an 80s/90s animated all-ages show that was popular amongst kids. It's not some potent super weapon that might fall into the wrong hands that we have to protect from evil.

This is me pretty much. I find myself reading the Android stuff a lot but I also switch between Freeza and Boo depending on how I feel.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

Freeza Saga > Cell Saga > Saiyan Saga > Boo Saga.

Saiyan
Boo
Android
Freeza

Surprised that the Freeza arc is so popular, I think it's the weakest arc of the four.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Buu > Cell > Saiyan > Freeza.

I have to remind myself sometimes that the Saiyan arc is pretty good and the anime butchers it with dragged out battles and training filler.

1. Cell
2. Freeza
3. Buu
4. Saiyan

The Buu Arc is just full of inconsistencies and shitty writing, but at least it's entertaining. The Saiyan Arc is just boring to me until the Goku/Vegeta fight with it's relentless training and Gohan filler.

I have to say the Majin Buu arc is my favourite of the "Z" era. We've got a great set of characters with Videl's debut, Mr. Satan's character arc, Vegeta's redemption, and Majin Buu being the first villain that's not a copy-pasta 100% pure evil villain. It's got some shoddy writing, but I don't really consider Dragon Ball Z a series that excels in writing, so I overlook it in this arc.

Second place is the Freeza Arc. I really like the focus on the Dragon Ball hunt, and it's got a great sense of adventure here. Sadly that aspect does begin to stop when the Ginyu Force shows up, and it does overuse the "Wait for Goku" trope. But the battle with Freeza really feels like its on an epic-scale.

The Cell Arc is in third place. We get some nice scenery here, and the battles with the Artificial Humans are really well done. But the Androids are dull villains who don't accomplish much, and Cell becomes less interesting when he starts absorbing the Androids. Another thing is that I don't like how Gohan's character derailment, no need to make him a pacifist after the Saiyan-Namek arc's build his character to overcome that.

Last but still likeable is the Sayain Arc. The battle's are great, but that's all I can say about it. The scenery is rather dull, and it's basically the retirement of Yamcha, Tenshinan, Chiatozu, & Yajirobe.

Preface: In raking them, I don't mean that 2-4 were "bad." Quite frankly, I love all of the arcs. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. I thought they were all good. But if I had to rank 'em....

1. Freeza
2. Saiyan
3. Android/Cell
4. Buu
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."
