Say something positive about the version of you dislike/hate
So we all have our preferences when it comes to Dragonball and most of us have at least one version of the show we strongly dislike. So I thought it'd be a good idea to try and think of something good to say about our least favourite version for a change. I'll start it off by looking at 3 of the dubs that I dislike the most.
The Westwood Z dub aka Ocean 108-276:
-Doc Harris was as good as ever as the Narrator
-Some of the music introduced in the Fusion saga was actually pretty good. Goku vs Kid Buu in particular had really good placement.
-Brian Drummond could still scream really well
-It was less censored than the Saban dub
-You could actually understand the character Killa unlike in the Funi dub
-It allowed DBZ to continue in countries that couldn't afford to licence the Funi dub for the whole series
The Blue Water GT dub
-Zoe Sulsar was decent as Kid Goku
-Japanese OST
-A really cool English cover of the Japanese intro
-It left in a lot of blood at times despite being TV exclusive
Blue Water DB dub
-It's the only AB Groupe produced dub that I can still enjoy and was an improvement over their GT dub
-Although the acting was generally wooden most of the voices suited the characters well
-Jeffrey Watson was an interesting different take on Goku during the 23rd Tournament
-Cool and catchy intro theme for the UK broadcast (There were 2 intro songs. 1 for the UK and 1 for Canada although the Canadian one would sometimes be used on Toonami UK).
-Left in all the blood in Goku vs Piccolo Jr
Big Green dub
-It was fully uncut even on TV
-Even though the delivery was terrible some of the voices were actually not that bad such as Chi Chi, Roshi, 18 and Oolong.

All of Db's bad dubs aren't 100% completed utter shit. They are good for casually watching on Tv.

While I don't like Vegeta's actual voice, his delivery is quite good.
Big Green Dub:
It makes me laugh.
Original Funimation Dub:
It got me into Dragon Ball.

A bonus that he pretty much sounds like an English Daisuke Gouri (still bummed that happened. Hearing Unsho Ishizuka - despite being a great actor - as Mr. Satan in BoG/Kai, was a bummer.)jpdbzrulz4sure wrote:FUNi dub: Chris Rager is a great Mr. Satan.

Westwood Dub
Vocal performance for the Saiyan and Namek Saga episodes is far superior to FUNimation's in-house dubbing.

FUNi dub: The short-movie of Mister Satan defeating Cell, complete with overblown BGM and terrible voice-acting to go along with the also terrible production-quality. This scene alone kinda makes me sad that there is no Faulconer-score option on the Dragon Boxes, because the intentionally terrible voice-acting just doesn't quite go with the original BGM.

Westwood Dub (mostly as compared to the FUNimation dub):
-Scott McNeil is a much better Fat Buu than Josh Martin.
-Cathy Weseluck is a much, much, better Kid Trunks than Laura Bailey.
-One particular track of music (may or may not have been from Mega Man/Monster Rancher, not sure) that was used for 'relaxed' moments was pretty catchy.
-Don Brown is a better King Kai than Sean Schemmel.
-While I prefer Chris Sabat (especially in Kai), Scott McNeil and Brian Drummond were pretty decent voices for Piccolo and Vegeta respectively.
Blue Water Dub GT:
-I concur on Zoe Sulsar being a decent Kid Goku.
-The script was much better than the script of the FUNimation dub and I often wish I could have a version of GT with FUNi's cast and Blue Water's script.
-Dean Galloway is, also, a better King Kai than Sean Schemmel.
-"Any last words?", "You're ugly!" always cracks me up.
-Caitlynne Medrek is a better Pan than Kate Bristol.
FUNimation Dub GT:
-They (eventually) gave us a proper English version of Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku which quickly became one of my favourite songs in the franchise.
-The performances were a lot more consistently good than previous FUNi dubs.

The Ani-Manga: I don't actually own any of the ones for the series (I have DBZ Movie 1, though), but I'm sure it comes on some nice, high quality paper and the screencaps are probably quite glossy and look really nice.

The English dubs are an interesting endurance test.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

In-House FUNimation Z Dub:
-Well, at least the episodes were relatively uncut...
-The DVDs featured the Japanese Audio track as a result of the above, which would've been impossible on the Pioneer DVDs.
-Acting got better by the Buu Saga... Now if I could say the same of the scripts, then I would probably watch it.
-Eventually became somewhat consistent, completely so if you watch it with the Kikuchi score.
Saban FUNi Z Dub (1-53):
-The cast had experience unlike the above.
-The 3 uncut movies.
-Scott McNeil's Piccolo.
-Saffron Henderson's voice was a good fit for Gohan... I can't say the same of some of her deliveries, however.
Saban FUNi DB Dub (1-13):
-The opening gave TFS something joke about...
Westwood Z Dub:
-Brian Drummond could scream.
AB Groupe Movies Dub:
-It's good for laughs.
-Kept the Kikuchi score.
Malaysian Movies Dub:
-Hikari no Willpower in Movie 9.
-Gohan literally takes over as Goku in Movie 9.
FUNimation GT Dub:
-One of the few dubs that kept all the VAs from the previous series.

Re: Say something positive about the version of you dislike/
Funimation's version of the Garlic Jr arc is hilariously awful, whereas the Japanese version is just awful. Soooo...I guess that counts as something positive?
I should note that while I find it the inferior version by far, I don't hate Funimation's dub of DBZ, mainly because of how far they've come since then. That makes it an interesting oddity instead of an unforgivable hackjob. So...for something else sort of positive, it's kind of interesting to see the first work done by the best NA dubbing studio. It's true what they say...you really do have to start at the bottom.

The music during OG Dragon Ball and the Saiyan/Frieza saga is good. I also like Cell's Japanese voice. And I suppose Nozawa playing Turles was a neat juxtaposition and she turned down the annoying stuff.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

The Faulconer productions score can be somewhat atmospheric at times. It actually sound great in MIDI.

Big Green Dub: the Name Big Green makes for a great joke in TFS's DBZ Abridged
Harmony Gold Dub: Goku sounded better the Colleen Clinkbeard's version and it was fun hearing Angelica Pickles as Puar excuse me Squeaker lol

Ocean/Westwood: Recoome's voice. The screams. Except Piccolo's before his fight with 17.
