Re: Glorious Anime Screenshot Thread
Movie 13 hasn't been posted a lot. So here's two screenshots from it. I still think this movie is very well animated.

Gohan turning SS2 at the World Tournament to me, is one of the most brilliantly animated scenes in DB history. Every shot is perfect. Even the shot of Yamu and Spopovich looking on.. such a basic animated move of Yamu moving forward, yet it's awesome...

For your information, it's Kazuya Hisada who drew that scene.LordCrumb wrote:Gohan turning SS2 at the World Tournament to me, is one of the most brilliantly animated scenes in DB history. Yeah, and Kikuchi's piece really helped build the excitement. Everything was great.

Kazuya Hisada definitely a top tier animator with DBZ. This is why I praise Seigasha, despite some of their fair share of bad moments.

Awesome. That last shot is Yamamuro right? The rest are Masaki Saito's. I've been saying this for a while, Saito's work looks a lot better than Minoru Maeda's.
Re: Glorious Anime Screenshot Thread
You know, despite some of the clear issues with the remaster, I do like FUNi's Blu-ray sets for the movies. I can't understand why that type of restoration wasn't used for the new Season Sets. Surely this is just as 'bold and vibrant' as they want it to be without being truly destructive.

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

The only reason the movies weren't utterly ruined is because they're on 35mm film, which has more detail and higher quality. The actual restoration process is the same as the one used on the Orange Bricks.AjayLikesGaming wrote:You know, despite some of the clear issues with the remaster, I do like FUNi's Blu-ray sets for the movies. I was aware they were 35mm but they don't strike me as having the same process as the as the Orange Bricks. There's still a thin layer of grain, colours aren't excessively saturated nor is the image destructively contrasted. Do you have a source on that?

Re: Glorious Anime Screenshot Thread
Here's a comparison between the openings from Coolers revenge and the Season 2 Blu ray. Both openings were sourced from 35mm film but the Season blu rays clearly look much better and the two openings show the the remastering process used for the season blu rays is clearly superior. Puto was correct in saying that the only reason the movies look as good as they do is because of the high quality source material. The actual remastering proscess isn't anything special there are tons of instances of dirt, scratch, and burn marks left in.AjayLikesGaming wrote:I was aware they were 35mm but they don't strike me as having the same process as the as the Orange Bricks. Interesting. That makes the movie Blu-rays look like shit. I've never put them side by side before! Totally obvious there. Thanks!

Re: Glorious Anime Screenshot Thread
The Double Feature opening footage (at least for movies 5 and 6) is identical to the ones used on the Orange Bricks. I know this because I was thinking I'd be able to use high quality screenshots from a Double Feature, but it was identical to the Orange Brick, and I even compared them side by side.
That's why they look so bad, so it's not an accurate comparison.
Here are the shots for comparison:
Movie 5 (DF):
Season 5 (Orange Brick):
The colors are very slightly different, but the quality is the same (same smudging), and every movie that uses Cha La has the exact same footage (even the later films which should have the Cell arc animation don't, except for the final shot for some reason). Considering each film has a slightly different remastering style (different colors, level of DVNR, etc.), the openings should be different, but aren't.
FUNimation remastered the 35mm openings, and reused them instead of processing them every time.

Exactly; they still have the exact same exaggerated color brightness/darkness and grain-scrubbing; the movies just have more detailed animation, a wider range of color, and greater inherent detail coming off 35mm. They had enough detail to effectively "take the hit" and still come out looking sharp and nice.qjz123 wrote:AjayLikesGaming wrote:Puto was correct in saying that the only reason the movies look as good as they do is because of the high quality source material. Okay, I got one. Every now and again something in DBZ strikes up an idea of mine to make a "This is Dragon Ball Z?" screencap montage, and this is the latest culprit, Piccolo's seeking out Cell after joining with Kami. All my caps are PNG sources, JPG'd by my host, unfortunately.
The tower right after Piccolo flies out of frame, nice shot of Korin, I think.
Then this amazing view that looks like something right out of a DBZ movie. And its only on screen for ten, fifteen seconds!
Piccolo even descends like a vaguely-divine being.
Could not decide on a vast landscape shot so I just picked one. Made me wonder if this was an episode Webfoot referenced when designing stages in Legacy of Goku II.
So, VLC question, since its Kanzenshuu's screencaper of choice and mine as well; whenever I take screenshots, I get 720 x 540 images. Is that a settings thing or part of the variable resolution of DVD?

Re: Glorious Anime Screenshot Thread
Haha! I was just watching that episode and was wanting to post that.
Then why does the 35mm opening used on each of the movies look way worse than the actual films themselves? And why do the colors look the same for the opening in each film, when the movies themselves clearly all have different "styles" of remastering, and very different colors?BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:Exactly; they still have the exact same exaggerated color brightness/darkness and grain-scrubbing; the movies just have more detailed animation, a wider range of color, and greater inherent detail coming off 35mm. The footage in the openings were reused from the Orange Bricks.
