Concept Art For Bulma And Goku...

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Thu Jan 12, 2006 6:21 pm

Taken from the Dragonball Landmark book. There were other images of Akira Toriyamas take on the Monkey King legend but these were the closest to Bulma and Goku. Apparently if he would have went with this Goku he was going to make him ride on a bullet with wings instead of a cloud as in shown in the book as well. The reason I dont have it here is because its in the very right side of the page where the actuall page meets the spine so it always came out a little blurry.

That's neat. IMO, Goku looks a little more "punky" in that picture. And Bulma does have a big head, but she also looks a little younger.
Best. Slip 'n' slide. EVER!

Punky? I guess nobody can tellm, since his arms are crossed and the pants aren't coloured, that he's in a cute little sailor suit. :P

I didn't notice that actually. When I said the "punky" bit I was looking more at his facial expression, and the way he was looking out at the viewer. I agree, though, that that outfit is cute on him. :)

Bulma looks a hell of a lot more serious... and she has a big gun  .

He's a little chunk isn't he...

I love seeing pictures like these. It gives me a moment to think about how things may have been if he had changed even the tiniest thing about the Dragonball Universe. Goku could have been a Sailor, think about that.

 I just noticed...Goku's tailess! I guess that means we've got a human fighting off the Saiyajin and Vegeta's the Legendary Super Saiyajin! :P

Hey that's true! In the one-shot Toriyama drew in 1990 (that talks about his original Goku sketch), Goku was distinctively left with the tail. In fact, before this rendition, Goku is a little chimpanzee in that uniform. Unfortunately, I only have a sketch from the one-shot and not the actual prototype sketch.

The big head is an aftermath of the Dr. Slump style methinks. =D But I quite like that design though. But then I have a weakness for hair that goes on for miles.

I might have the Dragonball prototype comic, I remeber seeing it and thinking it was strange. I will scan and post it sometime between now and Sunday.

Heh, Goku lookes cute. And look, he even has that Power Pole on him!
Bulma...eh...meh. Looks mostly normal, but she reminds me of a Dr.Slump character whose' name I've sadly forgotten.

I think you're talking about Akane. Anyway, that's some really cool concept art. It looks really good; almost better than the actual manga. I like Goku's hair in that, too. I don't really like Goku's clothes, though. Either way, thanks for telling us about this, Tanooki!

Well like I said before, I'd scan those pictures for Sunday and here they are. This should be the last picture post by me for this topic.

This is the Goku in that first picture riding the bullet with wings...

This is what I think are those Dragonball prototype comics, or at least some early work by Akira Toriyama that inspired Dragonball. Does anyone here know for sure?

I have some info on those in the French version of Daizenshuu 7. I'll look them up when I get a chance.

Oh, Dragonboy, that can be read over at Toriyamaworld in the One Shots section. It does show some of the base foundations of Dragonball as they're both rooted in the Journey to the West it seems. But they're also different enough to warrant reading both. XD
