Should Toei get a big composer for DBZ 2015 Film?

Post by Black_Liger » Mon Jul 21, 2014 8:25 pm

I would not mind if they stayed with Norihito Sumitomo, but it would be interesting if they got bigger composers such as Kouhei Tanaka, Yoshihisa Hirano, even Yasunori Mitsuda and Wataru Hokoyama.

I would love to see what Yoshihisa Hirano would do with Dragon ball, his score for Hunter X Hunter is off the scales.

Here is an Example of Yoshihisa Hirano(Hunter X Hunter):

Here is an Example of Yasunori Mitsuda (Kid Icarus Uprising):

Here is an Example of Kouhei Tanaka (Gravity Rush)

Here is an Example of Wataru Hokoyama (Resident Evil 5):

What do you think guys? should Toei clean the name of db music with a big name composer?

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they kept Sumitomo on-board for this (and I'd be surprised if they didn't, seeing as they kept him for Kai). While his Kai music apparently leaves a lot to be desired, I quite liked everything he did for Battle of Gods, so I'd have high hopes for his return here if he does come back.

I'm all for better music but i'd rather they put the big $$$ in the animation and film time

I'd like to see Tokunaga return and handle a Z themed film. But that's wishful thinking.

This thread made me realize that the score will be movie-exclusive for the first time ever in the franchise.

Y'know, you're right. Lest a new television series come around this will indeed be the only place these pieces are used. Although I suppose a Dragon Ball Heroes series to promote the new film beginning in April wouldn't be impossible. :P Actually this makes me wonder if Fuji TV will order another crossover between Dragon Ball, One Piece, and whatever takes over the 9AM slot in the spring. It would be funny if the first time the score for this movie is used outside of this movie is in an episode of One Piece or some other franchise's episode.

The 9am timeslot, isn't it going to Assassination Classroom? That'd be more difficult to crossover for DB and OP being that it's a in a (middle? high?) school setting.

Oh! For OT: I'd also rather have more money put towards the 2D animation budget, but I wouldn't mind having money put towards the score either.

Unless they do a Kai of the original series, which they should've done before. *grumble grumble*

Seriously though, I'm thinking they'll use Sumitomo, but you never know.

Unless they get incredibly lazy and reuse Sumitomo's BoG and Kai tracks.

I wish they'd hire Kikuchi again but then there's that he may have retired, or he's too expensive for Toei and they're just not willing to spend too much money.

Until when the film comes out, and the score is full of numbers that we thought were exclusive to Buu arc Kai.

As someone making his way through Hunter x Hunter currently, I'd love to hear Yoshihisa Hirano's approach to the franchise. I have a real thing for dramatic choral pieces and that guy sure knows how to do them!

I guess it depends whether we want a level of consistency between the films. Sumitomo is talented and some of the bigger pieces from Battle of Gods were fantastic. At the same time, I'd be marginally worried that the work he's done for Kai would be still fresh in his mind and we'd end up with Bruce Faulconer: The Movie.

As long as it doesn't have any random cheesy J-Pop in the middle of the fights scene I'm not too fussed.

What happened to GT composer, Akihito Tokunaga?! To me he was as great as Kikuchi.
Both barely had any sountrack that I didn't like.
A world without Dragon Ball is just meh.

I would love for Yoshihisa Hirano to compose for DBZ. Hunter X Hunter is my favorite anime right now... and that's Saiyan something.

But honestly, I think Kikuchi makes DBZ, DBZ. I don't know how his most recent work sounds but with Dragon Ball it fit right back then. He should make a comeback.

Yoshihisa Hirano would be a welcome addition. But, I'm more familiar with Hirano's work from Death Note rather than HxH.

I completely agree. The rest of the score doesn't matter to me too much as long as it's somewhat memorable
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)

Hans Zimmer, it could happen.
