The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
Every time I see some people talk about Viz vs FUNimation, some would say Viz is the better company. That was especially evident when Viz announced Ranma 1/2 as 4:3 and used the hashtag #nocropping. Yeah, I mean, that's cool, but they do shitty stuff. But, for the sake of this forum and topic, let's just focusing on Dragon Ball. Compared to Viz, I'd say FUNimation has done a better job releasing Dragon Ball than Viz has. FUNimation has actually released every single Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT episodes in it's original uneditied 4:3. There are the Blue Bricks for Dragon Ball, the Dragon Boxes for Z, and the Green Bricks for GT. What has Viz done? Viz has never released Dragon Ball fully uncut. Something is always edited, or it ends up being a crappy release. Not only that, but you could also argue that some of their translation needs work. It's just kind of awful that this is still a thing. Why am I reading edited Dragon Ball in 2015? Why do they not see that they messed up and they should release it uncut. The re-translation would actually be nice as well, but it doesn't have to be done. I get it, Popo is super racist, but even name changes are awful as well. FUNimation has dropped the H word in their home releases. For something on TV? Cool, that makes sense. Kids watch that, so it's logical. But every uncut release FUNimation has put out has had Mr. Satan as his name. Why can't Viz just do that?
If Viz really wanted to blow people away with a release, they should announce a Kanzenban release and actually make it uncut, with all the names intact, the art untouched, sound effects not edited. It's just getting to the point where it's really ridiculous. Sure, FUNimation's cropping is awful. But at least Popo is left untouched. Mr. Satan is still spoken, the text on signs and the like aren't digitally edited. Am I the only one that doesn't get this?

Actually outside of their handling of the DBZ franchise, I generally hear nothing but praise for FUNimation, while Viz releases meet to a mixed reception.

Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
Huh...I kinda hear people talk mixed results for both companies. I have friends who describe the Funi dubs these days as 'incredibly lazy and soulless'. I will admit that Viz has been going downhill a bit (Their Tiger & Bunny dub was painful....) but I think a part of that is Funi being really close to having a choke hold monopoly on the anime industry in the west. I think Viz is basically getting the scraps Funi doesn't want, though I could be wrong. I see more and more of the Funimation logo when I watch anime these days then I do Viz. The one major thing that I can think of off the top of my sleep deprived mind is Naruto and that's coming to a close.Kid Buu wrote:Actually outside of their handling of the DBZ franchise, I generally hear nothing but praise for FUNimation, while Viz releases meet to a mixed reception.
Though on this topic I have to agree...let the uncut beast loose people! It's 2015! KIDS SAY SHIT AND F**K ALL THE TIME! Who cares if they hear it from tv or read it. I mean we still have kids read Huck Fin and that has the N word in it! I don't remember the last time I saw a Viz episode of DBZ but I remember some horrific things. I could tell stuff was changed and that things weren't how they're supposed to be...

Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
Oh well then... If that is the case. Yeeeeeaaaaaaah...Viz...Viz viz viz. Their home releases aren't the best out there and it sucks. I don't know what happened, I remember some more quality stuff out of them in the past but these days there is a lot of corner cutting it seems or just pure laziness. I can't give full opinion cause I haven't bought or seen any of their DBZ home releases. But I believe a friend has some so I might look into them just for the morbid curiosity at this point.Kid Buu wrote:I mean their home releases, not their dubs.

Their home video releases are incomplete (missing credits and title cards), have horrible translations for the credits, and are all about pushing their brand image onto the shows. That's hardly good releases.Kid Buu wrote:I mean their home releases, not their dubs.

I cannot even purchase my favorite anime without having to pay half a grand, and you are going to complain about shit like that?

Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
I wish Viz would go back and give is a proper retranslation/uncut release of Dragon Ball. In comparison I'd say Funimation has done the better job just by allowing us to have a well-translated subbed version of the anime.
Trans rights, now!
Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
Nobody involved cares. The 3-in-1s from Viz and the Season Sets from FUNimation go on to show that. "You'll buy it anyway, now fuck off and take what the company gives you." seems to be the mantra.

Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
When Viz was doing their first run of their SJ print of the manga, they had hit their most uncensored point with the manga and had a more accurate English side than the dub.
The problem is, Funi got better about that kind of stuff, while Viz became Viz Media, and started censoring more. They've cut back a bit since then, but still.
Yeah, we could use a new translation (though it's easier to keep the old one). Maybe one day they will (likely only when management changes, or someone realizes it's a good excuse to milk the franchise for more money).

I hope that day comes soon. I just want the manga uncut in a language I can read. I feel like I'd be better off just importing the Kazenbans from Japan.Mewzard wrote:When Viz was doing their first run of their SJ print of the manga, they had hit their most uncensored point with the manga and had a more accurate English side than the dub.

Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with Popo's lips censored, as I keep seeing it mentioned? Grant I guess why that is, but noticed it a lot.
Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
Honestly, all these companies aren't that great. FUNI started out crappy, then got better, then started to take shortcuts in their releases. A prime example is their rescue license of the Tenchi Muyo series. The TV series were not remastered. Same old subs as the Pioneer release. No Mihoshi Special. Missing audio for the mini episode. Missing extras, etc.
VIZ just makes really dumb decisions, which is embarrassing considering how long they've been in the game. Their release for Sailor Moon has been a joke thus far. Plus, they had the nerve to blatantly lie when people called them out on their bullshit.

Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
From what I understand with their license rescues they don't redo the subs as it was already done for them. And they only change the credits if they weren't on there like with Slayers Next. Only rescues I have are Girls Bravo, Kanon, and Air: the Motion Picture. While I haven't watched the latter yet, the former have the same style of credits Geneion and ADV had, and same goes for what I saw of Ai Yori Aoshi online. (Bought the old release years ago, same with Tenchi except for Tenchi in Tokyo and Tenchi Forever, which was on purpose as I didn't like them). And yes I actually bought Girls Bravo. Seeing the trailer on Sekirei so many times caught my interest.Mosaic wrote:Honestly, all these companies aren't that great. Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
Viz is fucking garbage for Dragon Ball manga releases (and Sailor Moon too), first they release the Full Colour then they stop by the third volume, and now they've got an ongoing shitty ass 3-in-1 Dragon Ball manga release with paper quality worse than free newspapers. Their translated names for the characters (e.g., just call him Kaio-sama than an unnecessary long name) and censorship are also pretty weird.
I wish FUNimation would be the one handling Dragon Ball manga releases.

Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
Personally, all I'd like Viz to do is fix a couple of the names for their manga release: Vegerot and Hercule being the major offenders. Otherwise, I'm fine with their adaptation.
As for their Sailor Moon release: I still think it's a decent release overall. And yes, I'm aware of the video problems. The sound quality of the Japanese track and the new English dub both sound good, and the packaging and extras are solid. It's a damn shame that they publicly shot down their audience regarding the video remastering; I think that's the biggest reason why some are sour on their Sailor Moon release currently.

Did Viz release the Sailor Moon manga in your country? Here that was done by Tokyopop and later Kodansha.dbboxkaifan wrote:Viz is fucking garbage for Dragon Ball manga releases (and Sailor Moon too), first they release the Full Colour then they stop by the third volume, and now they've got an ongoing shitty ass 3-in-1 Dragon Ball manga release with paper quality worse than free newspapers. Re: The problem with FUNimation vs Viz
I think he's referring to the Sailor Moon DVD/Blu-ray VIZ released aabout 2 months ago which is complete shit, (why in the holy hell would you pillarbox a 4:3 image to 16:9 for DVD releases when DVD can natvely output 4:3 and 16:9, for Blu-ray it's understandable because the Blu-ray format is 16:9 only since it can't natively display 4:3 material, so pillarboxing has to be done for 4:3 material on Blu-ray to retain the original image, but for the DVD VIZ had absolutely no excuse for doing it especially since the pillarboxing actually shrinks the 4:3 image even more which makes the whole image look wrong at a lower reolution than was originally intended).Super Sonic wrote:Did Viz release the Sailor Moon manga in your country? Regarding Sailor Moon it was about the crappy home video release they've decided to put on Blu-ray and DVD. Embarrassing home release.
