How do you watch the series?
Do you watch select episodes or have to watch them all in order? Do you watch in various languages or only one? Do you watch all of the series or just one or two? When do you watch the movies, after you've watched all the episodes?
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

English only.
Usually just Kai.
If a movie fits in canon then I watch it alongside the series.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.
Re: How do you watch the series?
I have to watch them in order. Although I don't always watch DB before Z simply because of the pattern I've become stuck in. Mostly I watch Funimation's dub all the way through for Z, but I will sometimes start with the Saban Ocean dub. When I'm watching Funimation's dub I almost always go with the dub score. Most recently I've watched Z all the way through in Japanese and am now doing the same with GT. The reason I didn't watch DB in Japanese is because I just happened to have just finished it in English and couldn't be bothered to start it again so went straight to Japanese Z.
I've watched original DB in English many times but have yet to watch it in Japanese. As for the movies I tend to just watch them separately from the series, apart from the Ocean dub of movies 1-3 which I'll watch along with the Saban Ocean dub in my RtD set. I'll usually watch Dead Zone sometime in the Saiyan saga training episodes, World Strongest after they beat Vegeta, and Tree of Might shortly before the Ginyu Force fight.

Re: How do you watch the series?
Honestly it depends on what I'm going for at the time, but usually when I watch anything, I tend to watch all of it and in the order it (presumably) goes. It's also ironic that this is being asked just as I start up a new re-watch to try and finish it all up before Super, heh.ABED wrote:Do you watch select episodes or have to watch them all in order? As for the language, that depends. I've watched the series all the way through in Japanese once, and that was an amazing experience, and something I'd definitely like to do again some day. But most of the time, I'm going with the dub, if for no other reason than it being easier to multi-task while watching. For the movies, I tend to watch them around the same time as the arc they'd conceivably take place in, but for the purposes of my re-watch this time, they'll probably come after I finish their corresponding series.

I watch all the episodes of all three series in Japanese and I watch the movies where ever they fit with the show.

Re: How do you watch the series?
I watch it in order and make sure the movies go in order too the best I can I watch the English version but I've been going through all of Kai in Japanese(Which honestly I like better than the Kai dub ) I've watched a lot of the original Japanese version subbed as well but not all of it.(I got plans though ) OH! I guess I should also mention that I love watching the first 50 some episodes of Ocean and the only way I can watch the first 3 movies is ocean.

I don't usually re-watch the series, only select episodes at a time. I do re-read the manga though, quite often actually. I'm re-reading it right now as we speak, going through the 21st TB.

Re: How do you watch the series?
I rewatched DBZ many more times than DB. Thanks to TV airing episodes too.
Now, I'm watching everything in order.
Last year, I rewatched DB and its movies.
Now I'm on break and focusing on other things.
Next year, I will rewatch DBZ and its movies. And so on.
I always make breaks between seasons: DB - break - DBZ - break - GT.
Currently watching in japanese.

Re: How do you watch the series?
Now that I've seen DBZ all the way through, I like to pick an episode at random and watch it kind of like how I used to catch it on Toonami back in the day.ABED wrote:Do you watch select episodes or have to watch them all in order?

I'm no stranger to the English dubs and I also really want to watch it in Japanese all the way through. I've seen parts of the Japanese version.
I've only seen DBZ so far but I started both DB and GT a while ago and I'm slowly making my way through Kai.
When I watched DBZ all the way through, I googled the original theatrical release dates for the movies and I would watch them between the episodes that would air before and after the respective release dates in Japan so I would theoretically be watching them the same way people were seeing them when they came out. Although I think I slacked off towards the end with the last few (10-13 maybe).

Re: How do you watch the series?
I'm assuming this topic is about how we rewatch the episodes, and not how we initially got through the entire series.
I'm currently watching Kai in order.
Normally, I just select specific episodes or fights from the English dub. DBZ only.
I only find DBZ/Kai re-watchable, tbh. DB was fun for one run-through, but besides specific battles, I've never rewatched too many episodes. GT was a drag from start to finish, and I just don't enjoy watching it at all.
As for manga, I'll buy them eventually. But I'm not fond at all of Viz's translations, which is a huge turn off.
And finally, movies. I just watch whichever I feel like...whenever I feel like it.

Re: How do you watch the series?
I think of a particular part of the series I want to watch and go back a couple of episodes.
My favorite thing to do to relive my childhood is watch some old school Ocean dub Namek Saga leading into the first episodes of the FUNimation dub (and actually watch the Captain Ginyu Saga singles). Pretty nostalgic.

In Japanese, correct aspect ratio, etc. It's the one that's dearest to my heart.

Re: How do you watch the series?
I watch all of the episodes in the series in order, with the original Japanese cast, starting from the beginning of DB to the end of DBZ and I watch the movies only after I finish my binge of watching the entire series.

Re: How do you watch the series?
I watch the shows in Japanese, except for Kai. I watch that for the dub. As I'm watching DBZ, I also watch Kai. For instance, I'll watch 6 or 7 episodes of the JPN DBZ, then the 3 or 4 episodes of Kai that correspond to them. I've been thinking of watching an entire arc all the way through, then watching the Kai arc all the way through, and go back and forth.
I'm in the same boat as watching the movies around the timeframe they would take place. For instance I just watched Movie 10 right after finishing the DBZ episode where Vegeta destroys the punching machine.

So I'm guessing most of us here will queue up a few episodes every once in a while and burn through them? Or is that just me?

Re: How do you watch the series?
I mainly watch the Saban/Ocean dub of the first 53 episodes & Tree of Might. That's by far my favorite version of the series, to me "Dragon Ball Z" sort of ends when Goku arrives on Namek since that's when that particular dub ends. I generally try to avoid anything that features the FUNi in-house cast, even if it means i have to watch the crumby Westwood and Blue Water dubs. As for the movies and specials, Big Green dub all the way.
If i were attempting to watch the series in chronological order it would go like this:
1. Ocean/BLT dub for the first 13 DB episodes
2. Saban dub for the first 53 DBZ episodes (with Saban's "Tree of Might" in between episodes 45 and 46 since it originally aired like that)
3. Pioneer dub for the first 3 movies
4. Westwood dub for the rest of DBZ

So do you watch the other two Ocean movies as they aired on Toonami from the Rock the Dragon sets?Kakacarrottop wrote:I mainly watch the Saban/Ocean dub of the first 53 episodes & Tree of Might. Re: How do you watch the series?
Have been doing a watch through of the entire thing from DB episode 1 to DBZ episode 291 since about January of last year, and I'm just about to the Cell games at this point. I've been watching the movies exactly when they premiered in relation to the series originally. For example, the most recent movie I watched was DBZ movie 7, which premiered on July 11, 1992, so I watched it in between episodes 147 and 148, which aired on July 8, and July 15, respectively.
I watched DB through the saga sets, am watching DBZ through the Dragon Boxes, and am watching the movies through FUNimation's original singles. Glad to say there's nary a "season" set in sight.
EDIT: Worth mentioning. As I'm watching (in Japanese, of course), I'm following along in the manga and along with kenisu's BGM website. It's a very involving process.

Re: How do you watch the series?
I just watch Kai, my patience for filler material has reached its threshold these days. I don't own any of the DVDs (I sold my anime collection years ago) so I just watch whatever is airing on TV. Toonami is my first time watching uncut Kai. I know the story well enough to the point where I just dip in and out every couple of weeks. I'll probably end up buying the Kai Blu-Rays once the whole series is given a home release.I usually don't watch the movies or GT even when they air on television. BOG and [F] feel more like a continuation of the main series so I'll probably pick up a home release of those some day too.
Edit: As for the original series I'll stick with the manga and hope that someday they make a condensed OVA/Kai version.
