Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray or DVD
I know a topic like this exists so I apologize in advance if this is a violation of the forum rules. I have been thinking of picking up Dragon Ball Z for home video but I can't decide on Blu-ray or DVD. I've been thinking of getting the DVDs because DBZ, DBZ movies1-13,DB,DB movies, and DBGT are all out on DVD. However, with the Blu-Rays its just DBZ and the movies and I was wanting to put off getting the Blu-rays until the versions of DB and GT are released but from what I've been hearing those may not happen. I know it sounds weird but having DB and GT on DVD next to everything DBZ on Blu-Ray would just look out of place on my shelf. Maybe it's some kind of OCD thing. So I guess what I'm saying is do I get DBZ on DVD along with DB and GT , do I go with DBZ on Blu-ray with DB and GT on DVD, or do I wait for DBZ on Blu-Ray until DB and GT are on Blu-ray?

Re: Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray or DVD
I made a post ranking the various releases of DBZ not too long ago.

It all boils down to what version of the show you want to watch, really. If you want the Blu-ray Seasons, then you have to accept the incorrect aspect ratio and plastic-looking transfer. If you want the DVDs, you have more of an option depending on how much you're willing to pay for the entire show.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray or DVD
Really, the only problems with the Dragon Boxes are the muffled audio track, the Next Episode Previews and credits in the wrong order, the audio being off sync at times (as kei17 pointed out), and the missing previews for DB, DBZ, and The New Dr. Slump.
Re: Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray or DVD
I should have said this before making this post: I have no intention of getting the Dragon Boxes, I know the problems that the orange bricks and Blu-ray season sets have and have seen comparison shot after comparison shot between them and the Dragon Boxes. I guess I am one of a few who just doesn't care about that stuff. I guess I'm asking if I should pick the lesser of two evils.

If your options are the Orange Bricks or the Blu-rays, you should get the Blu-rays.

Divad, this is a question that absolutely only you can answer for yourself. Only you would know which set you would personally be the happiest with. I personally have a franken-set of Dragon Ball -Z. Blue Bricks right along side level-set blu-rays right along side Z dragon boxes next to the old "non-remastered" releases of the films and tv specials. So my Dragon Ball DVD collection is made up of 4 different release styles but ultimately I want the highest quality version of everything available with English audio and subs. That was my highest priority so my set is very mixed. Your priorities are obviously very different than mine. I think you would probably be best served by the Blue Bricks + Z Blu-Rays + GT Green Bricks.

Thanks Zoda. That is probably what I will end up doing. When Funimation decides to Blu-ray the rest of the series I will buy them too.ZodaEX wrote:Divad, this is a question that absolutely only you can answer for yourself. I really miss the variant previews that promoted both the next episode AND the next movie too. They really make the series feel more whole, and I'd have much preferred them using those and tossing the regular versions of the previews in as extras.DB1984 wrote:Really, the only problems with the Dragon Boxes are the muffled audio track, the Next Episode Previews and credits in the wrong order, the audio being off sync at times (as kei17 pointed out), and the missing previews for DB, DBZ, and The New Dr. Slump.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray or DVD
Most anime releases have smaller Blu-Ray packages than DVD packages because the Blu-Ray cases are slimmer excluding limited editions.
Just get the better release because how it will look on a shelf won't make it any better unless you enjoy it.

The cropping on the Blu-ray is A LOT better and the picture doesn't start to lose it's lines when it starts shaking up.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

Both the DVD and Blu-Ray releases have a lot of problems with them. But if you have to choose one, I'd go with the Blu-Ray sets. It's just the lesser of two evils.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray or DVD
This right here. since both releases are cropped I'd much rather have the blurays considering lines of animation don't actually disappear like they do on the orange bricks.sintzu wrote:The cropping on the Blu-ray is A LOT better and the picture doesn't start to lose it's lines when it starts shaking up.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

So what's better: The DVD sets of the movies or the Blu-rays? I know from a price perspective the DVD sets are cheaper.
Re: Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray or DVD
The remastered Blu-rays are better than the remastered DVDs for the movies, and (other than lacking Japanese title cards and way shittier audio on movie 13) far superior to the single DVDs. But if it's worth the price difference, I can't say.

Yes, but even if the master is mostly garbage, as it is in this case, the higher bitrate & resolution of the BD is still a benefit. Not to mention, the subtitles are a lot nicer looking on BD.eledoremassis02 wrote:Pokewhiz7 wrote:The remastered Blu-rays are better than the remastered DVDs for the movies, and (other than lacking Japanese title cards and way shittier audio on movie 13) far superior to the single DVDs. True, good point. A level set remaster would be awesome. Coolers Revenge looks pretty good tho.thejeremymenace wrote:Yes, but even if the master is mostly garbage, as it is in this case, the higher bitrate & resolution of the BD is still a benefit. ^^ Line detail is there, but the contrast & saturation are way, way too high -- which is more than I can say for some of the others that are overly DNR'd.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray or DVD
At this point, I'd get the Blu-Rays. The "remastering" looks less bad, and the Japanese audio track sounds better due to some mild cleanup.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
