Series/franchises that could benefit from DB's treatment

Post by Dragon Ball Ireland » Sat Mar 12, 2016 8:27 am

It is often argued here and elsewhere that parts of the Dragon Ball series have been mistreated, whether that be through bad edits, dub changes and home video releases. However, in the last decade or so, more so in the past six years much of that has changed. The whole series is available uncut, dubs have improved significantly (both in faithfulness and acting standards), and the options for different versions (English dub with Japanese music, English dub with English music, Japanese version with Japanese music) are available.

When I look at other franchises I enjoy I think that while it's a shame we haven't had a full HD release of the series, or even the Z portion uncropped Dragon Ball has been more fortunate in some regards. I also grew up as a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! and would LOVE to see the series being released fully uncut with the option of hearing the English dub with the original soundtrack, or any of the show in HD (cropped releases aside, DBZ at least had most of the Saiyan arc with the level sets and Kai up to the Buu arc).

I actually think the Digimon franchise would get a huge boost from something like this. Don't get me wrong, I think the music in some of the dubs are pretty nice but I honestly crave for a version of the Digimon Tamers dub that has the insert songs like SLASH! or One Vision for those really big moments. I really don't need that however for the likes of Digimon Savers cause I'm kinda wholesale purist for that series and only watch it in Japanese...It's Masaru not Marcus! But yeah, the Digimon franchise would definitely benefit from a release like this.
Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

A box set for Kenshin on blu-ray would be nice.

I would like if one single company owned the rights to dub Lupin the Third.

The Pokemon anime.

The Japanese version of the show has never been released in the U.S. I can understand in the first few years why Nintendo/PUSA didn't want this to happen (they were trying to pretend Pokemon wasn't an anime when it first came out over here), but nowadays there's just no excuse.

The problem of Pocket Monsters is that not all episodes received a home release / rental so if Funimation were to deal with PM they would have to be HQ broadcast episodes which I personally have no issue with as long as they'd release the entire series subbed. On DVD. I wouldn't see much point of a Blu-ray release because the episodes would still be SD quality and it's true, BDs are less likely to get scratched although I'm very careful with my media so I avoid scratching anything.

I'd also like to see:
- The Legend of Zorro subbed and dubbed (with a new English dub by Funimation, original Japanese audio and the Spanish Castillan dub)
- 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother
- Yu-Gi-Oh!

Frankly, I hate to say but Zorro & 3000 Leagues would be too niche for Funimation so Discotek would be better for it.

I would love for Sonic X to receive the Dragon Ball treatment.
Looking for these rare items/information:

Dr Slump desperately needs a dub.

I want to see this badly for Yu-Gi-Oh since most if not all of the original voice actors are still around and love the show. Uncut dub on top of Japanese uncut footage using the original Japanese score. Basically a continuation of Funi's uncut series which would require Funimation to get the rights again.

No, why would it? It's fiction. The strength of the characters is not possible to reach in reality.
I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

Funimation's Dragon Ball Z fans have said time and time again that they don't like Dragon Ball as it's boring, childish and nothing exciting happens so perhaps if it tanked they would call quits by the first or second volume. It's a niche series that should be handled by Discotek and they did a good job with the Movie set they released (except for the picture quality was sometimes pixelated). I'd love for Funimation to also work on Dr. Slump but it's their huge fanbase that counts whereas us fans of Dr. Slump are in the minority.

Problem with Pokemon is it is also aimed at a younger audience than DB is. Subbed anime releases are more for older teens and adults while Pokemon is aimed more at young kids. Recall at the first movie, I was probably the only audience member that was older than 14 and not accompanied by any small kids.

I told guys at Funimation events at cons that I would love them forever if they did Dr. Slump with Laura Bailey (this was before she moved to Cali) or Luci Christian as Arale. They said they liked Dr. Slump too, but it would be a risk being an older series and all. (Older anime series tend to not sell well in the US).

Saint Seiya is the one that needs it the most so hopefully Funi will save it like they saved One Piece.

I'd also like to see the Shippuden and Bleach parts get collection sets cause buying them the way they are is very expensive and they take up a lot of room.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

What are you talking about? YYH hd a good release, and they did a season set re-release on dvd and blu-ray. Heck, the blu-ray they did changes like redoing it so the second ending was in all its proper episodes, and changed one character's name back to how it was in Japanese.

Kenshin has been fully released uncut on dvd. I have the first two seasons in the smaller sets.

I fail to see the issue. FUNi has released plenty of niche shows.

Dr. Slump is super-long though; FUNimation buys episodes in chunks, so something doesn't sell, they stop bringing it over. Shin-chan, Sgt. Frog, D.Gray-man... There were talks they might not have been able to continue doing Fairy Tail at one point as well.

This thread is about series that have, at least in some ways had worse luck than Dragon Ball in their official releases.
