Clever Spiderman reference in DBZ...

Post by firen » Mon May 22, 2006 3:09 am

If you watch "Gohan Goes To High School" Episode 185 where Videl, Gohan and Videl's friend are talking about the golden figher and all of a suden Sharpner says "...who in the world has heard of a little book nerd secretly being a super hero?"

I found this very interesting. Whethere it was intentional is a different question, interesting nonethelss.

Any thoughts on this matter?

I don't believe the intention was to be a joke regarding Spider-Man, but rather the concept of what Sharpner mentioned is exactly as he put it.

Not to mention, no such mention would have ever been done in the original, Japanese dialogue. :P

Spiderman being the only nerd superhero? Apparently youve never heard of Superman.

The great Saiyaman saga is a parody of the superhero/sentai genre so of course there's comic book jokes in. There's a strong superman thing runing through DBZ, and I'm pretty sure that's why Gohan has thick black framed glasses in GT that being the classic Clark Kent look.

Not to poop on anyone's parade, but it's spelled "Spider-Man", not "Spiderman."

He's Spider-Man! Not Floyd Spiderman from accounting...

Superman is NOT a nerd. Are you kidding me? Writing for a newspaper does not make you a nerd. It's quite obvious the first person almost anyone thinks of as a nerd disguised as a superhero is Spider-man! But ya, don't mean to make this into a big argument, just sharing my findings, that's all. :)

Well, I doubt that was what Toriyama was going for, but if we're talking about the English localization, then probably. Afterall, they were both highschool students when they became "super heroes".

But Superman already exists in the DB world! (if you count Dr. Slump in)

Speaking of which:
Warning on the back of a can of coffee in Slump World: CAUTION: Coffee will not give you super powers!
What's scarier than a DBZ H-game?

Ok for one, Spiderman lost that in the 80s. He ditched the glasses and got really ugly hair. Another, watch Christopher Reeve as Clark, you feel like shouting out "dork!"

Aaaugh! It's "Spider-Man," people! There's a hyphen! A hyphen, I tell you! Stan Lee gave him a hyphen on purpose! Aaaugh!

I know, dude. I told people it's SPIDER-MAN, but no one seems to listen to Stan Lee.
