Most Official/Accurate Name Romanizations

Post by Suupaa Gohan 2 » Sun Nov 13, 2016 1:58 pm

So, I've been playing Xenoverse 2, and since I play on PC I also like to keep tabs on mods made by the community. Today, to my surprise, I encountered a mod that changed the names of characters to 'the Japanese version' names - so things like 'Frie-za' (been away a while, is that filter still in place?) corrected to Freeza, Turles to Tullece, and so on. I was excited - it's no secret that those who prefer the Japanese version are generally a minority in the western Dragonball community (at least, outside Kanzenshuu), so it's the kind of mod I never expected anyone to make. I fired the game up right away, excited, only to realize...well, it wasn't quite up to my perhaps overly-particular standards on which names to leave as-is, which to change, and how to change them.

I actually know how to use the message-editing tool for the game, and thought I'd just go ahead and make some minor adjustments for myself personally...but then it hit me. If I'm going to bother doing this, I should at least make an effort towards accuracy, right? Instead of going with my instinct in changing Recoome to 'Rikum', for instance, simply because that's how I've always spelled it, I started thinking about what the most accurate/official romanizations for character names are, because I honestly don't really know. That seemed like a good reason to make my mysterious semi-annual return to Kanzenshuu and spark up a discussion!!

I'd assume that the most 'official' romanizations would be the ones Steve Simmons uses in the official subtitles of the series, but I don't even know how many years it's been since I bought a Dragonball DVD, so I'm not entirely up on what his go-tos are, either. But that's probably a good place to start.

Unofficial, but fan-preferred names are welcome as well, if you think they might be more 'accurate' than the official ones (like the old Goku/Gokuu/Gokuh/Gokou argument). Wanting a sort of cheat-sheet list for the most accurate name spellings so I could make an edit to that mod was my impetus for making this thread, but I also think it'd be a fun discussion in general to get into which name spellings you prefer for characters, regardless of how accurate they may be (I mean, I'll always spell it 'Gokou' because official merch used to, even though I know it's wildly inaccurate). Oh, and it doesn't have to just be character names, but place names, attack names, pretty much anything that's different between the two major-language versions of the series are game. I'm sure this topic has cropped up many times in the past, but IMO there's nothing wrong with rehashing a good discussion!!

This is a list of all of the names that I could find in the series. Maybe there are more, but this is all I found so far. So this is how it works: Japanese name - Dub name - Viz's manga name. So if in the Japanese version someone's name is "Eenie," in the dub his name was "Meenie," and in Viz they did his name as "Minee," it's going to be "Eenie - Meenie - Minee." The Japanese names that I am using are from Steve Simmons's subtitles from the DVDs. If there is no third name, that means that the character did not appear in the manga.

Remember:

Steve Simmons's translated name - Dub name - Viz's manga name
