New digital manga focused on... Yamcha?

Post by Wobbuffet » Sun Dec 11, 2016 2:18 pm

So, I was checking Shonen Jump Plus today and there was a new manga with Yamcha as the protagonist. Actually, the main character is a savy Japanese student who woke up in the Dragon World as Yamcha and decided to grind as much as possible.
I can't read Japanese, but it was very amusing nonetheless.
You can check it here.

This is by @dragongarowLEE, one of my favourite Dragon Ball doujin artists. It's great to see him working in an official capacity now. Very well deserved.

Well, like I said before, I guess that person who said "Toriyama is the biggest asshole in the universe" for mistreating Yamcha will be pretty happy about this!

This forum is so over-dramatic that it's not even funny.

How fun! I am going to love this.

Also that art style is pretty damn close to Toriyamas. It's so great.

This is actually a fantastic idea beyond whether or not you like Yamcha.

It's that wish fulfillment fantasy of the nerd who gets stuck in the world of his favorite story. Being in Yamcha's body actually makes this way more compelling than it otherwise might be, because if you ended up in Goku's body where would the drama be? Just force train yourself to go Super Saiyan before Radtiz even shows up and and kick his ass. But you can't do that here, you're Yamcha. Strong enough to fight, but not dominate, so struggling and training actually has meaning.

Think about all the moral dilemmas that stem from this premise. Do you try to keep Yamcha's relationship with Bulma? If you do, Trunks won't be born and you screw up a ton of things - sure YOU know that Dr. Gero and the Artificial Humans are coming, but how do you warn anyone of that? Sure, you know Cell's in Dr. Gero's lab, but do you even know where that is? Even if you do manage to stumble upon it, and destroy Cell with somehow not alerting the mad doctor himself, how on earth do you prevent Goku from dying of a heart disease? But even if you let the relationship take the dive, is it right to be a jerk to her when she IS in love with you?

How much intervention to prevent pain is helpful to the world, and how much just dooms it later on? If handled right, this could make a fantastic read.

Just noticed the chapter is not called "chapter one". I suspect this is a one-shot.
Anyway, I checked the Twitter account of the author and I recognized some of his drawings from elsewhere. He can really emulate any drawing style!

I want this to become an anime as soon as April 2017, Toei must do it whatever it takes, I don't fucking care.

I'm a little confused here, why is this allowed? A doujin fan artist is getting to publish an official manga using Yamcha? Doesn't Toriyama have to approve of this stuff?

I guess it's the same as the DBH manga. Toyble was a doujin artist but was hired to make an official spin-off.

Wait. What?! :wtf:

This looks really fun, and the art is amazing. Hopefully someone will translate this.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Most creators in the industry start out publishing fan works (mostly porn) at Comic Market and other conventions. It's absolutely normal for official companies to mine the Comic Market scene for talent. In the US our IP holders squash pretty much any and all unlicensed works because of our oppressive business and capitalism centered culture. In Japan, so long as a fan work doesn't make too much money or rattle too many bones the IP holders look the other way because it cultivates talent and fandom excitement. And, again, most artists don't care if a fan sells a doujinshi. Look at all the big titties in Bleach, Fairy Tail and One Piece. Kubo, Mashima and Oda aren't going to throw a fit over 18+ fan works because they include fan service in their original works because they like those sorts of things.

As long as this gets more serious and its writer delivers other spin-off mangas focusing on other characters, I'll be fine.
