Funimation's portrayal of "Killa"

Post by Doctor. » Tue Apr 10, 2018 1:28 pm

Did we ever find out what the creative decision behind that character was? Was it some kind of in-joke? Did they lack the script so they just made gibberish up to fit in with the mouth-flaps? I kinda doubt they were trying to intentionally be offensive, but it's still a weird choice to voice him in such a way.

I’ve always been curious of this as well. I remember being a child and seeing the early Boo Arc on Toonami and being really disappointed that I couldn’t rewind and try to figure out what the hell he just said.

Huh, I remember that guy. I don't recall anything particularly odd about his voice acting in Z Kai, so maybe Funimation decided to change tack on his performance?

In their Z dub most of his speech is just gibberish. It's really weird.

The only thing I've heard on the subject was Sabat saying Killa in the original didn't have much of a personality and since he was such a minor character, he didn't think it would be a big deal to make such a change. If I recall the dialog they wrote was mainly to amuse themselves.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

I'm honestly surprised Toonami didn't make them go and redub Killa's voice for the tv airings of DBZ like they did with the villain of the week in the last episode of Tenchi Muyo!

One translation:
“Man, i tell you that, whooh, man, uh, Pintar'll work him like a jackhammer, ah, that'll kill mm. yeah. this here. that guy. heh. he hah. hm"”

No idea what they were smoking when they wrote/recorded that lmao.

I love the dub but hearing him talk like that always killed me so much! LOL I was glad in Kai they made him sound right.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128
Still recording Toonami broadcasts on VHS after all these years!

They were watching King of the Hill one day and decided they wanted Boomhauer in Dragon Ball I guess lol
