Toriyama’s opinions on DB works

Post by Travis Touchdown » Sat Aug 04, 2018 7:12 am

I’ve decided to do a little rearranging with my Dragon Ball shelves and I want to make a grand definitive author’s “canon” which would include stuff he didn’t necessarily do but prefers. This would include, for example, the Super manga based superficially on the fact that he gave Toyotaro such praise while expressing very minimal frustration with how the anime adapted his outline. This will not include Bardock: The Father of Goku because despite it being well documented how much he enjoyed it, he himself kind of “retconed” it with DB- years later.

There’s a snag I’ve run into however with The History of Trunks. I could’ve sworn I had read somewhere that he’d said he prefers it over his own Trunks: The Story chapter in that Toei simply did a much better job showing the world Trunks came from. I cannot for the life of me, however, find any proof he said this.

Can anyone verify that? Did he really state his preference for the animated Trunks special or did I just make that up?

Thanks in advance!

Where did Toriyama express minimal frustration with the anime adaptation? I believe you, I'm just curious, and a quick google search turned up nothing.
aka TheMilkmanConspiracy on IFDB
aka WhereIsTheMilkman elsewhere

There’s an interview in the translation section. He doesn’t outright say he hates the anime and such. Not at all. More along the lines of Toyotarō gets it right the 1st time. What he said I believe should be taken in stride but the fact that he does give such praise is why I’m putting the manga up over the blurays.

The minimal frustration part is a comment I’ve read elsewhere. To be honest, I guess I couldn’t tell you if it’s legit.
“Inside, I've been upset at 'Dragon Ball' in the past, as well as the live-action film that came later," said Toriyama. He continued, "I've revised the script for the anime film, and I've complained about the quality of the TV anime. Maybe someday it'll be a work that I'll like so much that I won't be able to leave it alone."
