Viz reprinting the DB and DBZ manga box sets!

Post by the1payday » Mon Dec 10, 2018 1:12 pm

Found via Amazon, it looks like Viz is reprinting the two manga box sets that came out forever ago and have basically been unavailable since. It’d be awesome if these had a touched up translation, art, etc... but this is Viz we’re talking about, so it’s highly doubtful. Links below. June 4, 2019 release dates.

Good, hopefully the original releases go down in price. I missed those fancy box sets way back when...

Oooh awesome! I wonder if it'll be closer to the Kanzenban release? Hopefully they'll revise that awful ViZ DBZ logo at the very least.

While I'd normally say a new translation is unlikely, this will be the first VIZ release since the writer of the translation for the "Z" portion was arrested for child porn, so ya never know, they may not want themselves associated with him anymore.
Dragon Ball Arc Rankings: 1. Piccolo Daimaō 2. Saiyan 3. 22nd Budōkai 4. 23rd Budōkai 5. Hunt For the Dragon Balls 6. Zamasu 7. Moro 8. Tournament of Power 9. 21st Budōkai 10. Broly 11. Battle of Gods 12. Boo 13. U6 Tournament 14. Freeza 15. Red Ribbon Army 16. Artificial Humans/Cell 17.Golden Freeza

It flows precisely and fluidly from where things left off in the aftermath of the 23rd Budokai and mostly hits the ground running from there without really stopping to look back. You're plopping someone into the middle of a book starting at chapter 195 out of 519 for absolutely no good goddamn reason, with very minimal opportunity to look back at much needed context and character/story growth.

Oh god, I didn’t even consider that. It would be so amazing if they started fresh. Do they still publish other translation from Gerard Jones?

It seems the most recent non DB translation from him at Viz was Pokemon Adventures in 2011.

But Gerard Jones worked on other translations that are still in print, such as InuYasha.

We'll see what these new boxsets yield but I suspect it's going to the same old, same old...

I got an email reply from Viz...yup; the box sets are the same as they’ve always been, nothing new, nothing re-translated, partially edited, etc.

Yes, sadly, this is going to be the same censored old translation repackaged and repurposed so that Viz can get some quick bucks for the next fiscal year. It's par for the course for them. The Amazon description however says that there will be a double-sided poster and "collector's booklet featuring fun Dragon Ball trivia" whatever that's supposed to be, and an interview with Toriyama (new or old TBD...).

well, then i have no desire to spend 300$+ for this. Those extra things will become available on ebay anyways. I hope one day they will re-translate the whole thing and not censor it... sucks that it most likely will never happen.

Thanks for that info, that's quite helpful. I may consider picking these up if they have nice covers, particularly if they're in the style of the original Tankobon.

Well, just think about the Full Color release and you'll have your answer.

Ugh. That's extremely disappointing.

So totally uncensored except for Popo's lips?

If they're sticking with the old translation may as well hurry up and get the Artificial Humans/Cell Full Color arc out in English already.

So censored.
But once the Red Ribbon Arc is released, Black will also be censored.

It's up on Amazon UK too for £130. Makes about each manga cost £5.
