So, lots of new info since yesterday. And hey, Funimation actually acknowledged the pushback, so we're on the right track, I'd say.
To be very charitable to Funimation, they actually listened to fan feedback, as this release fixes what was the biggest complaint about their previous releases: the 16:9 cropping. The blog post has even convinced me that they're honestly trying to get the most image they can out of those 3rd-gen masters (except those exceptions pointed out). But, the cropping was only the most noticeable and egregious problem, as there's still the DNR and the color correcting. It seems like the colors are improved over the previous Blu-rays, but that doesn't mean they're good. They're still way overdoing the DNR, which is frustrating to see.
But now, I'm at a bit of a crossroads on whether or not to get this. The framing does seem to be done acceptably now, and that was my biggest complaint. Even with my other gripes, I'm at the point where I just want a complete release of DBZ that I can watch through. The last time I revisited the series (other than Kai) was with the Orange bricks over ten years ago, back when I didn't know better, and I didn't even make it that far. I could go hunting for the Dragon Boxes, which might be fun to do, but also likely erratic and could take years. At least with this, there isn't going to be essential parts of the picture chopped off.
My question is where is Toei in all this? To be honest, the only new remaster I could be really excited about would have to use Toei's masters. Since Funimation is doing yet another remaster using their materials on their own, it sounds to me like Toei's not going to be doing any remastering anytime soon.
