I’m gonna say no. But I think it depends on the location and demo.

Hard to compare. Closest measurement I can think would be this.

Going by that, more popular than Sonic but not Mario.

Mario has a wider appear to a broader range of people. Partially down to the times. Arguably the Dragon Ball manga is boring because you have to put the effort in to read, and the anime is less approachable because it's long. The mario games are more stand alone than a serialized anime with more than 100 episodes.

It's considerably more popular than Sonic. Sonic is a game first and even it's games aren't as successful as Dragon Balls now.

Mario would be debatable. Maybe though because Mario is still just limited to gaming even if it is one of the biggest.

You do realize that Sonic is the only character to ripping off DB, something that Mario can't even compete against.

Yes, but it's main product line are video games.

I remember reading that the creator of Sonic did that as an homage to DBZ. Then I read this really stupid debate on Reddit about what came first because DBZ debuted in the US later than Sonic so it must be a ripoff of Sonic (it’s like it never existed in Japan before 1991).
An interviewer asks, "The soundtrack in Sonic 3 has become legendary. Is it true that you worked with Michael Jackson on it?" Takashi Iizuka kills all of our hopes and dreams by replying, "You know, those are just rumors, and SEGA does not want to say anything about them. So they will forever be just rumors..." WHY!?

Hey, it's not Yuji Naka fault, we didn't know why Naka made that homage in the first place.

Yeah, but again, this plumber is the first guy to never be transitioned to anime in the modern era.

In the West at least, I'd say Mario has a generational advantage. Although Dragon Ball and Mario are around the same age, Dragon Ball didn't cement itself into Western culture until the past fifteen years or so. A lot of people in their 50's down have Mario in their consciousness, Dragon Ball is more 35-ish and below. It'll probably even out in time, but I think hardly anyone at all regardless of age doesn't at least have a little bit of familiarity with Mario as a character.

So both Mario and DB came in the 80s, while Sonic, Naruto, and Luffy came in the 90s.

I'd say no. Mario is well known by just about anyone out there because they know Nintendo ever since the 80's.

This is like saying that Dragon Ball is more popular than McDonald's.

More around 28 years since Dragon Ball is well known in the West. AB Groupe made the franchise a huge success around European countries but the popularity in some of those countries are nowhere near as much as they were in the 90's.

Back then there were magazines, toys, always on TV, "controversies" and it was extremely hyped up (a lot used to ditch school and even work just to watch it). So as such, the Western country I'd say which is more popular than it was before – America.
