Qualifiers for the post:
  • I own the 30th physically and because of that I can get raw images directly, I don't own the DBoxs and am generally not familiar with the differences between them. The images use what I assume to be the Japanese Dragon Box since the only language options are Japanese, but there are many assumptions on my part.
  • These images aren't synced perfectly since the DBox frames have a small amount of shake and I'm eyeballing it. The content of the frames should match otherwise.
  • I only did 4 comparisons for two reasons; because I'm not 100% confident in the DBox images and don't want to waste to much of my time if something is seriously wrong, and because the website was having some amount of trouble with the uploads.

  • The AI seems to have repeated the weird line on a few of the bricks on the tower, they're the blue and red colored ones.

Goku's Home -

  • The AI seems to have deleted the shingling to the right of the smoking chimney, you might assume it's grain noise, but it's consistently there on the DBox(though admittedly hard to see anyway). The other chimneys also display the lines on the red bricks again.

In general it looks really bad, and have a lot of color artifacts and weird halos

But compared to the 30th it looks better in dark areas

Here is a werid one for Dragon Ball (excuse the offsync these were screen recorded via VLC)

Episode 31 appears to have a pan in the FUNi single and not the Dragon Box (presumably because of cropping)

Until recently, I had always assumed that the Funimation Singles weren't cropped. Probably cause they're in 4:3 aspect. This was until I decided to compare the colours between the releases, and my gosh... It's pretty bad.

AND YET, the Funimation single shows more footage on the left side.

Really throws me off since these were taken from scans from film they had and they still had to deal with overscanning (my guess what the veiwer actually saw on a CRT would have been similar to the picture information on the blue bricks (maybe a tad more)

Those Funimation film reel stills are gorgeous. What are the chances of us getting that level of quality in a release? Pretty low, I imagine. It sure would be awesome though.

I believe that while they are cropped they are no worse that what was broadcast on TV (US/Canada) at the time. If you look at TV rips from the original airings the framing is or should be identical to the singles.

They are cropped/zoomed in such a way that will not prevent you from seeing any important details, similar the Blue Brick Dragon Ball release zooming.

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring with that shot using recordings of the Toonami and Toonami UK airings.
Comparing these screenshots from VHS recordings to ArmenianPepsi's home media screenshots strongly suggests that the Toonami airings were nearly identical to the old singles. The only likely exception would be anything that might've been introduced through recompressing the video for the DVD release, but the cropping and colors seem to be exactly the same.

On a sidenote, does anyone have access to a recording of the original Japanese broadcast of episode 120 and is willing to share a screen capture of the same shot? I am really curious as to how the cropping compares to the Toonami broadcasts as well as the Dragon Box release.
