Could have stopped Fat Boo as a Super Saiyajin 3.

Decided to leave it to two brats barely out of pull ups.

What shows he changed?

Goku didn't choose to get in a pissing match with Vegeta. So many of Goku's problematic decisions are explainable by pointing out Toriyama was making it up as he went. He didn't think of Super Saiyan 3 until AFTER Goku fought Vegeta. Why would Goku fight Vegeta if Goku knew Vegeta wasn't a challenge?

Goku has made plenty of bad decisions, but given the sloppiness of that arc, I can't put the blame on Goku. He's not written according to his established characterization.

Because if he stayed longer in Super Saiyan 3 he wouldn't have had time to teach Goten and Trunks fusion.

Plus like someone said before repeating his mistakes doesn't mean he didn't realize that he could make said mistakes, if he felt it was easy for him not to repeat mistakes then he wouldn't of stay dead because of it.
