Kaiserneko from DBZ abridged responded to the poll and I think it raised the votes for 4:3 a bit. Hopefully it will stay like that, though it honestly woudn't surprise me if they just ignored the poll and went with 16:9 instead like Funimation once did.

It's at 61% for 4:3 now. So if a couple of more influencing people post to vote that it should be all right.

Yeah, get ready for the release to be 16:9 regardless...

Makes no sense to me, aren't the type of people still buying physical in 2019 usually the same type of people who would want the original aspect ratio? Cater to your market! Why is this so hard!?
This is the episode of when Gokuh enrages himself after Freezer talk shit about Kuririn

They're not Funimation. They wouldn't do that...

Probably best idea would be to release both 4:3 and 16:9 version and you can change with one you want in options, kinda like what they did with original Star Trek (unaltered or with enhanced special effects) or some Laurel & Hardy movies (original B&W or in color). But if there is only one option, release it in original version.

Wouldn't that mean two video tracks? And double of space needed?

Yes. Therefore, it'll never happen. Too space intensive.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

This is why I personally don't think there'll be a Spanish dub included on these anytime soon. It made sense on the Ultimate Uncuts where there was more than enough space with three episodes per disc, but on modern releases that contain seven episodes per disc in an age where you can get every dubbed episode of Super on demand, it doesn't make sense to sacrifice space for a third audio track.

Oops, forgot the context of the thread. By "these" I meant "general English releases by Funimation or Manga UK".

Or, & go with me now, include a diagram that shows people where the "zoom" button is on their remotes. Same result.
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

Doesn't work on all TVs sadly, particularly on Blu-Rays which HAVE to have a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Remember that we're talking about the same audience who find cropping a 4:3 show, heavy DNR and a completely inauthentic dub and replacement score as an acceptable alternative to watching the original product. They won't care.

Oh trust me, I know.
I myself would prefer DB to be in 4:3, however, its just false to claim that zooming in on a 4:3 picture to 16:9, will give you the same result as an actual 16:9 transfer.
I see that claim thrown around a lot on here, which is odd, as a lot of people saying it claim to be A/V experts.

The other thing you need to remember I think is that we're not talking about applying this to an Orange Brick, we're talking about a new Dragon Ball HD transfer. Assuming Selecta Vision know what they're doing, the picture should by default look sharper even in 4:3.

So I think when it comes to your images, it would be more accurate to use 4:3 Kai as an example and then compare that to a 16:9 release of that show (or, say, a clip from TFC that uses footage from Kai).

There is a truth to the idea that zooming your TV gives the same result.

That truth is that people who prefer a 16:9 crop won't care about the difference, they'll just be happy it's in 16:9. As far as they are concerned, the result is the same.
But they're also so lazy, they'd rather it be done for them.

Audio tracks take up such an insignificant amount of space on a Blu-ray, that it's not a factor in any way, shape, or form. It's 100% a matter of rights, and in cases like the Pioneer dub, whether Funi has any specific reasons to exclude the track.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

I mean, besides the alignment being slightly different, basically. All depends on if selectively, or straight-crop.

Yes, it's technically different than you crop raw film footage to 16:9 because the so-called Academy ratio of film footage is actually 11:8, which is a little bit wider than 4:3. You can get more image by cropping it to widescreen, but the difference is very little here.

Also, selective cropping can lessen problems of composition in many cases that cannot be avoided in the simple zooming in option on your TVs. However, ultimately it's nothing but a matter of degree, as the cropping process itself destroys intentions of the original creators in either case. In addition, for casual viewers who do not care such faithfulness in the first place and want their TV screen filled with images no matter in what format the contents were created, virtually it does not make any difference to them whether or not it be selective. The difference would be almost unnoticeable to them.

Therefore, selective cropping is obviously a waste of effort. They ought to release every content in its intended format, and those who are congenitally allergic to black bars should just use the zooming in option as it can perfectly fulfill their demands. Everyone can be happy in this way.

Well, the poll ended with 65% in favor of 4:3. Let's see what happens now.

It comes out as 16:9 anyway.
