Missing Creditless Openings and Endings

Post by DNA » Mon Aug 12, 2019 5:29 am

So I've researched a bit and there's quite a few I haven't found at all. I wonder if they exist (other than on Toei's vaults somewhere, if that).

Openings
  • Dragon Ball Movie 1 Creditless Opening
  • Dragon Ball Z Creditless Opening 1
  • Dragon Ball Z Creditless Opening 3
  • Jump Super Anime Tour Creditless Opening
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 14 Creditless Opening
Endings
  • Dragon Ball Creditless Ending 1
  • Dragon Ball Creditless Ending 4
  • Dragon Ball Movie 1 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Movie 2 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Movie 3 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z TV Special 1 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z TV Special 2 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 1 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 2 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 5 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 8 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 9 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 10 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 11 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 12 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 13 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball Z Movie 15 Creditless Ending
  • Dragon Ball GT Creditless Ending 2
  • Dragon Ball GT Creditless Ending 3
  • 10th Anniversary Movie Creditless Ending
Have some of them actually been released and I just missed them? Maybe on an odd foreign DVD release or whatever.

I suspect the reason why we have what we have is due to Funimation wanting creditless text for things like the original Dragon Ball anime. I think it's no co-incidence that those exact OP/EDs were included as extras on the Dragon Box.

Curse of the Blood Rubies has its opening creditless on Funimation's release. It's pretty much the same as the series except for the title anyway. I think you'd be out of luck if you want the Japanese title, though.

DBZ Opening 1 is textless in Funi's Dead Zone release. DBZ Opening 3 is textless on all of Funi's releases for the series and movies.

Also, DBZ Movie 14 doesn't have an opening sequence with text in it.

The Internet summed up in four words.
"This sucks. Make more."

It's worth noting that Funimation apparently doesn't have a genuine creditless version of GT ending 4; they evidently removed the credits themselves and did a poor job of reconstructing the animation in the process: https://youtu.be/wXHYEPiWgxE.

I asked Toei Video about this when they released Dragon Ball the Movies Blu-ray, and their answer was "We no longer have the masters of the creditless openings and endings that are not included in the Blu-ray release." Still no official words on the TV series, though.
Toei Video wrote:[

Translation wrote:[About the creditless version of the openings and endings]
We use the composite videotape masters that were also used for the DVD release.
We are planning to upscape them to HD for the Blu-ray release.

Speaking of the presence or absence of each movie's creditless opening/ending, as you might expect, we are going to include the ones whose original masters still exist.

Also, we are sorry, but we have no concern with the contents and their sources of foreign DVD releases.

Has Dragon Ball opening 2 been released creditless anywhere? I was under the impression they only put out opening 1.

Zero context, zero setup. Its in NO way meant to be seen as a "beginning point" for ANYTHING other than the next story arc. It flows precisely and fluidly from where things left off in the aftermath of the 23rd Budokai and mostly hits the ground running from there without really stopping to look back. You're plopping someone into the middle of a book starting at chapter 195 out of 519 for absolutely no good goddamn reason, with very minimal opportunity to look back at much needed context and character/story growth.

Very interesting list, Kei, it really shows how all over the place Toei has been when it comes to doling out their masters.

I also just wanted to say, welcome back to kanzenshuu! You've been sorely missed around here my friend. :)

No, the creditless version of DB opening 2 has never been released or exported, but it's partially used in Goku's Traffic Safety, Goku's Fire Brigade, and the trailer for DB movie 3.

Sucks because that is easily my favourite edition opening in the franchise! While not as well-animated as the first one, it does a much better job at summing up what the first anime was all about.

I made a mistake. It was exported to the United States in the '80s, which is the sole instance confirmed so far.

Wellcome back kei17.

The French movies & specials boxset L'Intégrale des Films Vol. 2 contains creditless endings for movies 10-13:

From the same set, the 2nd TV special's ending background is black rather than blue:

Also, the creditless ending of Dragon Ball Movie 3 was shown in the Harmony Gold's combined edit of Movies 1 and 3. That version was only aired on broadcast in the US and never given a domestic home video release. However, it was released on VHS in Mexico (dubbed over into Spanish).

There's a combined version of Movies 1 and 3? How does that work? oO

The through arc of the DB movie trio is that Goku leaves his home with Bulma, meets Roshi, returns to him for training, then competes in the Tenkaichi Budokai. So I imagine the opening adventure is reduced a fair bit and the second movie is cut out in favour of "jump cut WOW WELL DONE WITH YOUR TRAINING!"

Goku flies off to Roshi's at the end of movie one and is next seen on a plane with Roshi, Kuririn and Lunch. The dialogue also pretends they're somehow connected: Pasta mentions another group searching for the Dragon Balls and Pilaf says that his Dragon Radar works using the energy from Gurumes summoning Shenlong.

It doesn't lol. It goes from Goku flying to Roshi's house (removing the last couple scenes from Movie 1), to the scene with the Pilaf Gang (completely cutting out Movie 2) with dialogue rewritten to make the Movie 1 directly connected to this one, to the first throne room scene where the Crane Hermit reveals the Dragon Radar to Chaozu and kills Blue completely cutting out everything in between (the training montage, Roshi asking Goku and Krillin to jump as high as they can, Blue's introductory scene where he stuns a guy in order to search his vehicle).

If you're able to ignore all that as well as the name changes, you'll find that HG DB Movie 3 is a better work than Funi DB Movie 3 from both the perspective of accuracy and acting.
