Now I;m not saying go full Lucas and try to erase that content from history but I don't see why it'd be "censorship" to edit it out of future releases.

I seriously don't believe that will actually happen anytime soon if ever, and as much as some of those above things may be seen as being in rather poor taste or questionable these days i'm not expecting Toei or FUNimation to go the editing route and strip them out from the episodes themselves.It_Is_Ayna_You_Flips wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 6:51 pm I really don't get the resistance to editing out incredibly dumb homophobic jokes (like the one about how Blue wants to fuck a child because that's just what gay guys do, I guess). There's a lot of inane bits of comedy throughout the series that don't enhance the product or actually make the audience laugh. ChiChi the shrieking banshee filler, Roshi the sex offender filler, Krillin the eternal loser filler. All of that stuff should be trimmed down and removed because, and be honest, when you were a kid watching this show on old VHS tapes, you fastforwarded through that stuff.

More gay people, more bi people, more pan people, more poly people, more trans people, more non-binary people, more demisexual people, more asexual people, and more aromantic people. Yeah, none of the actual GSRM folks in this thread have called for editing out of offensive things. Even if times change and society's views change, I'm always against changing a work for them (and if it's something overtly bigoted, then maybe it wasn't worthwhile in the first place).

I find that those comedy scenes actually do enhance the product and make me laugh. And I certainly never fastforwarded through any of it, or anything at all really.It_Is_Ayna_You_Flips wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 6:51 pm There's a lot of inane bits of comedy throughout the series that don't enhance the product or actually make the audience laugh. The very act of editing is a type of censorship so why be skittish about editing out bad jokes? I never see people get this defensive about all the other filler Dragon Ball Z is an infamous for so why does a joke about a gay man wanting to rape a baby have to stay in?MyVisionity wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 8:00 pmI find that those comedy scenes actually do enhance the product and make me laugh. Censorship is censorship, no matter how terrible the material may be. Aside from the whole preserving history and learning from it angle, there's also the matter of preserving the product as it was created and intended to be. I think it would be disrespectful to the creators, the audience, and truth itself to edit these things away.

I think it’s less we should censor the past as much as we should maybe leave problematic garbage behind and focus on promoting anime that promote a more progressive agenda.It_Is_Ayna_You_Flips wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 8:43 pmThe very act of editing is a type of censorship so why be skittish about editing out bad jokes? And I'll reiterate that I'm not saying destroy all the old tapes or make those versions impossible to find. But if we're going to praise Kai for cutting out so much of the boring filler, we should also be open to other potential edits that change the original material.
Also, Dragon Ball was always a cash grab series. It's not like we're defacing the frescos of Pompei or whatever. We're talking about editing a kids' show. No one is disrespecting the "audience" or "the truth."
I am not advocating for "censoring the past." I am explaining why I don't see anything wrong with censoring rereleases when the company isn't doing anything to bury early versions of the work. It's just another part of editing as far as I'm concerned.XanatosVanBadass wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 10:38 pm I think it’s less we should censor the past as much as we should maybe leave problematic garbage behind and focus on promoting anime that promote a more progressive agenda.
By letting the earlier versions go out of print, they ABSOLUTELY would be burying them. Just in an indirect way. Frankly I’m fine if that’s what you want, just own it.It_Is_Ayna_You_Flips wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 11:36 pmI am not advocating for "censoring the past." Can I just say that in a broadcast edit that includes adding breathing to corpses and turned halos to light orbs it’s trying to make the minstrel show look less offensive that gets people’s jammies in a twist?goku the krump dancer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 1:56 pmSo were you okay with Blue Popo?It_Is_Ayna_You_Flips wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 11:36 pmI am not advocating for "censoring the past." Hell yeah. The only funny thing about Popo is that he reminds me of a joke from SFDebris. "What the hell is that? It looks like a gingerbread man made out of racism." As Blue Popo he still wasn't funny but at least he was my favorite color.
No it would not. There are already multiple versions of Dragon Ball out with all that content in them. We've had 30 years worth of releases, dubs, rereleases, and remasters. TOEI pivoting to a new edit is no more buring the old material than Victor Hugo was burying the original Notre Dame de Paris by writting La Esmeralda. A new revision, edit, or retelling of a story is not in and of itself burying an earlier iteration of that story.XanatosVanBadass wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 5:48 am By letting the earlier versions go out of print, they ABSOLUTELY would be burying them.
