Boycotting DB related company - did you do it?

Post by coola » Sun Feb 02, 2020 4:09 pm

First of, sorry if this topic is rude, i don't wanna start any flame war, lets keep this discussion civil :)

Funimation cancelled Ishuzoku Reviewers, making it impossible to watch legally, what is more worrying, is they still hold rights to it, and might not release it on DVD/BD, my question is, have any company in your country, that hold rights to Dragon Ball (people working for it, or voice actors) did something, that made you boycott their releases, and import it from somewhere else? Personally, even before Funimation pulled that stunt with IR, voice actors that work for them, did some things i really don't like, and since then, i import games or anime from another country.

Cancelling a softcore porn anime and firing a sex offender. Oh the tragedy.

It's not Funimation it's Sony that caused that anime to get cancelled since they own Funi now and I know a guy behind the scenes.

Sony is crazy with censoring I mean look at their Betamax days.

Or look at how they're dealing with mature content in their games. They allow explicit content and nudity in western games but when a Japanese game contains the same kind of content they demand to censor it with some people arguing they present it in a sexual nature unlike western games that don't take nudity as sexually as anime games.

I pretty much don't buy anything from them anymore. Their home videos are shitty enough as it is, this whole Ishuzoku Reviewers thing is just another mark on their record.

I don't really pay attention to what funimation does outside of shows I watch but I've been boycotting their home releases since 2007. I was 10 when the orange bricks were released and I still knew they looked like garbage. Here I am at 22, still waiting for that perfect (enough) release. Would've bought the dragon boxes buuut I was in middle school/early high school when they were still in print so I couldn't fork money to buy it, *sigh*

Thats why i try to avoid giving sony any money when i can. It would be one thing if they did it world wide and regardless of west v jpn, but to only do it to one and only to not offend western bs(when the west gets other raunchy games) rubs me a very wrong way

A friend of mine told me what kind of shit is in Ishuzoku Reviewers, and...
Well...
I mean, it looks like straight up thinly-veiled hentai, with loli shit... Nothing of value has been lost.

And in fairness to Funimation, I'm told the manga wasn't very lewd at all (though reading the premise, it sounds pretty on the edge, at least ), so they didn't know until way late that they were distributing something like this, so it's about right that they'd drop it after finding out what's in it after release.
And on top of everything else, the imagery in the show is outright illegal in many parts of America.

There are many, many things that annoy me about Funimation which lead me to tend to avoid their products, but this doesn't make the list at all.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

And that's why I can't take this situation seriously. The anime community is in uproar... over what is basically porn. It's not even porn with historical value to make preserving it a huge deal either. It's a new anime that 99% no one would've heard about it if it wasn't for this issue yet it's treated like FUNimation went ahead and vandalized the most valuable treasure in history. This makes the Kodomo No Jikan controversy look more mature when you put it next to this.

It's crazy.

Tell ya what, though -- I'm gonna bet you a lot of this uproar is fake outrage, manufactured by the Vic Mignogna stans as part of their anti-Funimation movement, similar to the fake outrage surrounding the leaked bloopers from DBZ.
I can't think of any other reasonable explanation for why people would be so passionately arguing about it sullying Funi's integrity for them to drop this lolicon porn anime that is completely un-noteworthy aside from the fact it's mildly amusing that Funimation briefly distributed a porn anime.

Maybe a bit, but I think it’s more a bunch of otaku are salty that their “problematic “ anime that would “own the libs” was taken from them. These are the same people who love garbage like Goblin Slayer and Shield Hero BECAUSE (not despite) of its triggering content. The anime fandom in the US is toxic sadly.

As for my thoughts on this specific instance? Meh, an incompetent company does something incompetent (licensing this show in the first place). What else is new?

That anime had bara and yaoi in it too so idk feels pretty progressive to me.

Ishuzoku Reviewers' fans are not out of bounds complaining about FUNination's dropping of the series. Porn is art and the sentiment that "it doesn't matter" is disgusting. You don't have to like it, either.

This isn’t the first time Funimation shot themselves in the foot by licensing a title without doing the proper research. As I recall, they were in a bit of hot water with Dance in the Vampire Bund.

Nope. So given your location, do you keep up with American actors and do they send things to your country?

I used to buy stuff from Funimation via Rightstuf or Amazon. :)

And by "voice actors doing stuff i didn't like" i wasn't really talking about Vic, as it seems that case isn't defendable for Vic fans with all proof, but stuff like Schemmel being arrogant primadonna etc. And, if that part about Sony being at fault with IR, it would be pretty ironic, Sony Betamax failed war with VHS thanks to ban on porn, and once again some people are angry at Sony, for banning or censoring erotic stuff.

I’m surprised Sentai weren’t the ones to nab this series. It seems more in line with things like Monster Musume or that Qwaser show that... made me really uncomfortable. They seem to have little to NO shame!

Though, thinking it over, I wonder if Funi only licensed it in a bundle with some other anime they truly wanted. Hence the lack of research.

But was it really FUNimation's fault for not knowing the kind of show this was or the anime studio's fault for ramping up the sexual content in comparison to the source material?

That’s a fair point, I guess. I guess I’d prefer it if these companies were more selective in what they licensed. This incident has kinda made rethink whether simulcasts are a good idea. Heh, I can’t believe I’m saying that, but . . .
It can be two things.
Another fair point. I guess I just don’t have much faith in Funimation as a company.
