Mexican Blu-ray for GT Special?
I knew Zima released the movies and Z specials, but I just found out about this. Anyone know how this compares to the Dragon Box or FUNi releases? Is it a just an upscale, or an actual remaster?

Re: Mexican Blu-ray for GT Special?
It's a normal upscale of the DBox master, which is the same master as Funi used for their DVD.
It's not outright shit, but it makes no improvement over the DVD footage, so it's worthless.

The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Does a film master even exist for the special? I know on the Dragon Box it’s just the digi-beta they sent to the TV station. Can’t imagine that looks good upscaled.

There's no reason to assume it doesn't exist, really.
Most likely, Toei just forgot to transfer it, and/or decided it'd be cheaper to use the tape.

Well, this is disappointing, considering how bad it looks compared the rest of DBox as it is.

I guess that’s what I meant. It’s as good as nonexistent.

Not really. The broadcast audio was never used by Toei, but it exists. The master audio of GT was forgotten by Toei and Funi, but it exists.
For the GT special's film masters, I'm guessing that if Toei ever decide to remaster DB+Z+GT in HD (which may happen eventually, but probably not soon), they'd get it transferred, since unlike on the DBox where everything was standard-def, they simply wouldn't be able to get away with the broadcast master footage anymore.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

We’re far more likely to get HD stuff from Funimation than Toei. I’ll bet that the film master of the GT special will sit in storage for another hundred years until the building burns down or gets swallowed up by an earthquake, with not a soul caring that it was there or touching it.

Indeed, Toei stubbornly refused to allow ADV to use proper masters of Sailor Moon for the 2004 sub release and it actually ended up looking worse then the official dub releases as a result.Zestanor wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 4:31 pmWe’re far more likely to get HD stuff from Funimation than Toei.
