I get that they're an asexual species, but it does make me a little sad that the namekians are all male or masculine looking. More diversity is always a good thing. The Namek saga is lacking female representation...

Kinda agree with this, but ultimately when it comes to these sorts of things (especially anything involving combat), I'm not demanding it 100% like a Soviet commisar commanding socialist-realist art or an Inquisitor demanding that a Catholic novel needs these 10 exact elements. If it's a sausage fest, it's a sausage fest. If it's taco Tuesday, it's Taco Tuesday. If it's mushroom season, it's mushroom season.

If there are fem-esque Namekians I'd not be surprised ("female Namekian" is an oxymoron if they're asexual). But honestly I think this is an example of reducing diversity by making an establish unisexual/asexual species follow the human/mammalian binary.

I'd rather something like it turning out that Freeza's race has a dozen different sexes. Or Majin Boo creating a completely ambiguously-gendered line of children since it's obvious he can create progeny anyway he wants.

I wouldn't have much of a reaction if some turned up, but do I actually care if that ever happens or not? Eh...no. They're homogenous weird slug people who all look like a bunch of Piccolos. And they're asexual. I think the near uniformity makes it unique and is partially the joke, anyway.

Exactly. Stories have no obligation to cater to every demographic that might catch wind of it and represent them. Like, it would be cool for me if there was a black Saiyan but I don't actively care if it happens and demand it. It's not my story - I'm only a customer. They put out what they want to put out, and I watch.

If they were more androgynous I think it would've lent more to the lore of the Namekians as a people, though I wonder if Piccolo as a character would've had the wide appeal that he has presently.

Growing up, I kind of always wished there were female Namekians. Now, I guess I don't care as much, but it would still be neat.

Another cool idea they could've done is make U7 Namekians look male while U6 Namekians look female.

It's honestly something that never crossed my mind. The Namekians were mostly needed to support Piccolo and Kami's backstory. I think we all know the real reason there weren't female Namekians is probably because Toriyama is lazy and didn't want to have to keep up with different designs. A lot of the Namekians just look like variations on Piccolo.

Yeah also it's like how do you draw female versions of creatures that look so evil and ugly to begin with? Or course it can be done, but often times the tendency is to draw female characters as "attractive" by default. Toriyama might not be capable of overcoming that kind of thinking.

But also, I think it would normalize the Namekians a bit too much when they are so naturally strange.

Well, as TVTropes points out, some Namekians have clearly male characteristics, such as mustaches. I'm sure Toriyama could draw a female-looking face and put it on a Namekian body, without any other characteristics.

It's a missed opportunity both ways. Ultimately the lack of female Namekians was used as a one-time curiosity that isn't ever expanded upon or explored in any fashion whatsoever, and most likely thrown in as a convenient way to explain why there's only been males at this point and Toriyama doesn't want to draw 'em. Heck at that point Toriyama could have gotten away with saying that for ANY of the alien races he's come up with for how many times he draws female versions of them, Saiyans included.

But those two facets are kinda part and parcel for Classic-era Dragon Ball.

I mean, it would be kind of interesting to have see that done back then but as we know in universe Namekians are asexual and reproduce via eggs from the mouth like Piccolo Daimao. Then again, given how different looking they are and all i'm not too surprised that Toriyama made it to where there are only males of the species both full grown and children.
