I dig that analogy. However, first half of Saiyan saga would take place in 1996 actually (the timeskip between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z is five years). The second half and Freeza saga in 1997. Early Cell saga in 1999 and the rest in 2002. Majin Buu saga in 2009. Tarble OVA in 2011. Movie 14 in 2013. Movie 15, Universe 6 saga and Future Trunks saga in 2014. Universe Survival saga, Dragon Ball Super Broly and Moro saga in 2015. Granolah saga in 2016. End of Z in 2019. First two sagas of GT in 2024 and the other two in 2025.

I think this actually might help people understand time placement if we use real world calendar, who knows. But I really like this idea.

For the record I do think that Dragon Ball being set in the late 80s to mid-90s is very much part of its charm today.

Goku wouldn't be able to figure out a cell phone. He doesn't have the patience to learn a new skill like that, especially if it doesn't help him get stronger. Think about it. What is a cell phone's primary use? Keeping up with others. When has Goku ever cared about that? He only attends parties and important family events because he's pressured into it by his wife. The man can instantly teleport to anyone in the universe just by sensing their ki, and yet he goes years without speaking to his closest friends. He is a socially inept, battle obsessed Saiyan, raised by a hermit. Relationships are far from his first priority.

It doesn't bother me at all. I think it would add a level of quaintness to seeing Gokuu using a cell phone casually and without fumbling around.

Goku in chapter one of the manga learned how to use bulma’s motorcycle on the fly. So maybe he’s not actually as tech inept as people would think.

I definitely think a degree of subtly is what would make Gokuu's aloofness pop more. He needs to be able to be more than just a bad imitation of tropes. Tropes are there for desert, not the maim course.

I didn't know about this until I started watching MistaireFusion's videos but apparently Goku is also a Stephen Hawking level genius when it comes to figuring out puns. So I guess it's worth remembering that Goku follows the Roger Rabbit Law of Competence, he can only do it when it'd be funniest.

heh I was thinking something similar while watching Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the show (no spoilers), they use Windows laptops/iPhones alongside all this advanced technology. I just thought it was funny to see 2020 technology alongside all this future technology. It reminded me of Dragon Ball (and other "future-present" shows) where you'd have VHS tapes and cassette tapes alongside spaceships and Capsule Corp. capsules
