Hello, ladies, gentlemen, and everyone between and beyond, and welcome to week 80 of the first Dragon Ball rewatch of the decade.
We're doing five episodes a week, and we'll be watching every single episode of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT. All 508 episodes. Plus the TV specials and the movies.
I encourage you all to watch in Japanese with subtitles, especially if you have never done so before, but watch along in whichever way brings you the most joy.

This week, the Cell arc finally ends, and we get the first legitimately good Dragon Ball movie since Garlic Jr. Next week, the Afterlife Tournament!

Previous thread: Week 79 (DBZ 188-192)
Next thread: Week 81 (DBZ 195-199)

Anyway, without further ado...

After returning to the Earth of the future, Trunks reunites with Bulma, and talks about what happened in the past. They then learn from the radio that No. 17 and 18 have appeared and are destroying a city, and Trunks flies off to where they are. Not knowing of Trunks’ power-up, No. 18 and 17 are pulverized! Time passes, and Trunks lures Cell out as Cell has his eyes on the time machine. Surprised, Cell tries to defeat Trunks, even without being in his perfect form, but is instead overwhelmed and wiped out.

Anime-only/filler content: Trunks saving the old man Android 17 is threatening (in the manga, he dies). Trunks's entire fight with 18 (instead of him instantly destroying her), Bulma briefly ribbing Trunks about him hiding a girlfriend when he tells her to go away since he senses Cell, the brief scene after Trunks kills Cell, where he hugs his mother.

Interesting trivia about Z episodes 193-194:
  • At this point in time in the manga, the Dragon Team arrive for the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai, Goku arrives from Other World, and they all get their ranks via the punching machine.
  • MISSED TRIVIA: Bulma arrives at the Lookout via a plane shortly before Vegeta and Trunks exit the Time Chamber.. It's commonly cited that Bulma shouldn't have been able to because vehicles wouldn't be able to make it. However, when the Lookout was originally introduced by Karin, he only says that they'd be repelled. Assuming this is something done by God, this explains why Bulma was able to do it: at that time God was absorbed into Piccolo, and Piccolo (and later, Dende) would certainly allow Goku's friends and family to visit.
  • Toriyama's artwork of Shen Long on the first page of Chapter 418 has been used innumerable times as key art on Dragon Ball products and merchandise.
  • Z episode 193 is the last time Jillian Michaels voiced Gohan outside of a couple of brief flashbacks. The next time an Ocean dub would record new young Gohan lines would be in Kai, and we are fairly certain that Saffron Henderson returned to voice the young Gohan throughout Ocean's (still-unreleased) dub of Kai. We could say similar about Funimation's Gohan voice at the time, Stephanie Nadolny, if it wasn't for the redub of Z episodes 1-67, and the partial redub of the next chunk after that. Though even then, that would only apply to the TV anime, since video games and some of the movies were also recorded at various times after Z episode 193.
  • We stand corrected! After Kuririn attempts to turn 17 and 18 back to humans, Ten makes a point of asking why he included 17 as if 17 is still alive, and Piccolo reminds him that he was almost certainly restored, being one of Cell's victims (this scene is kept in Kai). No one brings up whether or not 16 was revived.
  • When Kuririn apologizes for taking Yamucha's wish away for a necklace to give to his girlfriend, Yamucha laughs it off by saying he'd never wish for something that stupid. Of course, Yamucha's original wish was for him to not be nervous around girls so that he could get married!
  • This scene is where it's revealed that 17 and 18 are twins, which would explain their behaviour around each other. Toriyama decided to not reveal their original names until many, many years later, in an interview. Why they prefer to use their Android names despite their anger at being turned into Androids is unknown.
  • Tenshinhan presciently notes that he probably won't be seeing the other characters again before departing. This is backpedaled by the "revival" era of Dragon Ball, where he's present in the Jump Special, both of the newer Z movies, and Super.
  • In the panel where Gohan says goodbye to Dende, Trunks still has his long hair, but it reaches his shoulders, meaning his neck must be VERY tall!
  • As Gohan flies past Karin's Tower, the original vase of Divine Water can be seen behind him and Yajirobe.
  • In the scene where Trunks departs for the original future, everyone is wearing either a black shirt or a black armband, likely out of respect for Goku's death. The exception, unsurprisingly, is Vegeta.
  • Recurring death tallies: (now bolding changes to make it clearer)
    • River fish: 7
    • Son Goku: 2
    • Piccolo: 2
    • Chaozu: 2
    • The moon: 2
    • Yamucha: 1
    • Tenshinhan: 1
    • Roshi: 1
    • Kuririn: 1
  • DBZ Episode 194 is the final anime appearance of a teenaged Trunks until End of Z, where Kid Trunks now matches the approximate age of Future Trunks. In the English dubs, this is marked by both being voiced by Eric Vale (Funimation) or Alistair Abell (Ocean), however in the Japanese versions both the young and adult versions of Trunks are voiced by Takeshi Kusao. Future Trunks himself would not appear again in future Dragon Ball material until Dragon Ball Super.
  • The wide shot of Capsule Corp. in the original future is the same drawing Toriyama used for it in Trunks: The Story. The same applies to the panel of the hovercar outside the broken window, only it's been cropped so that you don't see Trunks taking the box of food out of the car.
  • Future Bulma has taken up smoking, something with Familiar Bulma also does as she approaches that age (as seen in the Buu Arc).
  • The last spot the original Androids attack is Parsley City, again keeping up with the theme of Dragon World Earth's towns being named after spices.
  • With his jacket removed, Trunks looks rather similar to how his father would appear in the Boo Arc, particularly in the manga where both are depicted in black clothing.
  • In the manga, 17 shoots the old man in the head, killing him off-screen. In the anime this is softened: while 17 points his gun right at the old man's head, Trunks is able to save him. The Viz manga also toned this scene down, removing 17's gun and the ammo casing, and using a sound effect for a punch rather than a gunshot.
  • It's possible that Trunks: The Story and Peace for the Future are meant as commentaries on juvenile delinquents, given that 17 and 18 are teenage drifters who destroy and abuse their strength for extremely petty reasons and have no real goals in life.
  • In the manga, the time skip after Trunks defeats the Androids is three years. In the anime it isn't specified.
  • It's unknown why exactly Trunks waited for Cell to ambush him rather than going to Dr. Gero's lab and killing him as he did in the Familiar Timeline.
  • In Cell's flashback in the Cell Games, his ambush of Trunks in his future was depicted at night in a grassy area. In the episode 194 version it's at day in West City, but this isn't too much of a contradiction: since Trunks knew he'd be ambushed before using the time machine, he probably did that intentionally so that his fight with Cell would be favourable, particularly by being during the day.
  • The final Chapter of the Future Trunks ending is called Peace to the Future. All versions and adaptations of this Chapter, in Japanese and English, are called that or Peace for the Future, making it one of the few parts of the story that can be called directly by its title rather than "Episode 194" or "The one where...".
  • When Trunks faces Cell in his timeline, he's wearing Saiyan Armor. This was likely created by Future Bulma, considering the one Trunks took from the Familiar Timeline had a hole blasted through it by Cell.
  • The Cell Arc happens to end bang on Tankobon #35!
Movie trivia:
  • DBZ movie 9 released at the 1993 Toei Anime Fair alongside Dr. Slump and Arale-chan: N-cha! From Penguin Village with Love and YuYu Hakusho: The Movie.
  • Name pun trivia courtesy of Herms' name pun roundup:
    • Bojack and Bujin come from the adjective boujakubujin meaning "arrogant" or "audacious".
    • Gokua comes from "goku-aku", and means heinous or otherwise very evil.
    • Bido comes from hidou, meaning unjust or inhumane.
    • Zangya comes from zangyaku, meaning cruel.
    • Gyousan means "a lot", Okkane comes from okane which means money, and Doll is an abbreviation of dollar.
    • Udo, the figher Gohan handily defeats, is probably named after a plant, and specifically the Japanese phrase "udo no taiboku", or "Good-for-nothing", a phrase coming from the fact that the udo plant is not very sturdy.
    • Dosukoi is a chant sumo wrestlers say.
  • The TV-and-dish setup that Kaio watches the Grand Tournament from is exactly what Piccolo and Dende used to watch Cell's announcement of the Cell Games.
  • In the movie, Goku and Kaio are hanging around on the "asteroid" where Kaio attempted to build a house. In the anime they moved on soon afterwards, but the movie implies they stuck around for a while without attempting to rebuild the house.
  • The first fighter in the orange gi uses the same design model as Man-Wolf from the 22nd Tournament. Much like Man-Wolf, he's eliminated by a ring-out, although in this case it's entirely self-inflicted.
  • Kuririn wonders who he should take with him to the hot springs around the world. This is in fact the prize for SECOND place; maybe Kuririn's being more realistic than usual?
  • Tenshinhan is competing in the Grand Tournament despite him saying he didn't expect to see the others ever again before leaving.
  • Chichi says that if Gohan doesn't keep his strength up, it'll all be for nothing. Cut to ten seven years later where Vegeta scolds him for not keeping up his training.
  • This is only the second third time Gohan has been depicted in the Turtle School gi, the first time being during the Saiyan Training filler arc, and the second being in the Trunks special.
  • As reported by Bulma, Trunks is able to appear because he's come back to report that he killed 17 and 18 in the original future. This allows his iconic vest to have its sleeves ripped off without contradicting Peace for the Future.
  • Bulma and Chi-Chi's rivalry appears here before it does in the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai in the Buu Arc.
  • The referee who declares that Yamucha is disqualified was previously seen at the 21st Tournament Preliminaries.
  • Piccolo enters this Tournament (and the 25th) without using an alias like he did in the 23rd Tournament.
  • Gohan honors his human opponent with a physical gesture before beating them handily, something Goku had a habit of doing back in his Tournament days.
  • Tenshinhan uses the Kikoho, which depletes his lifefoce, despite there being no need. The Dodon-pa would have been a much less draining move to use.
  • This is of course the second time Kuririn and Piccolo have fought each other, the first time being their finals match at the 23rd Tournament. Much like that match, Kuririn gets caught up in Piccolo's cape during the fight.
  • During the Piccolo match, Kuririn has to flap his way back up into the arena, which is ironic considering his ability to fly was revealed during their previous match-up!
  • In the playing cards, Pilaf is depicted on the Kings, Shu on the Jacks and Mai on the Queens. This is their first appearance in the anime since being ejected from their own airship by Daimao five years prior in 1988. Their next apperance will be three years later, in the 1996 premiere of GT.
  • The pyramid in the middle of the Battle Island II arena is modelled after the Incan pyramids.
  • The sword used by Trunks' opponent uses the same sound effects as his own.
  • Gohan cleverly disintegrates the two clock hands with a powerful kiai, the first time it's been shown as an offensive move rather than a defensive one.
  • As explained by Kaio, Bojack attempted to destroy the "cardinal" galaxies of the Dragon World, something that Broly happened to do in the previous movie.
  • The backstory for Bojack would much later be contradicted by Dragon Ball Super, where it's explained that Kaio's world used to be much bigger before Beerus got upset and destroyed most of it.
  • Bojack's backstory is also not made apparent in the Cell Games, as Kaio made no indication that Bojack, a being of a comparable strength to Cell, has been released thanks to Goku.
  • Yet another rendition of Piccolo's theme!
  • This is the sixth movie in a row where Piccolo shows up to save Gohan from off-screen.
  • Similarly to Coola's Revenge with Goku, Bojack has Gohan take on his latest form by duplicating the circumstances from the first time he attained it. In this case, Bojack crushes him with his arms, complete with the same sound effects, before Goku provides emotional support from Other World.
  • Bojack appears to be aware of Goku, his dead status and that he's Gohan's father.
  • The movie copies the finale of the Cell Games so closely that Gohan has a bloody spot on his forehead where Cell headbutted him, despite sustaining no such injury in this movie. The movie also copies him defeating the henchmen with melee attacks that bifurcate his opponents before they explode into dust.
  • The music cue for the aftermath of Gohan's victory would be used in Dragon Ball Kai's Kikuchi mix for that same moment in the Cell Arc.
  • The credits photo of Gohan in the schoolboy outfit just before he leaves for Namek is taken from a manga panel, with the addition of Chichi standing behind him.
  • The final shot at the end of the credits is the first time Chaozu has been depicted in a suit.

Bonus Trivia time!! For the past week I went ahead and organized a complete collection of all the Movies, Specials and Features, including the two Safety Specials, all four versions of Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, and more! Thus I am now able to present to you...

Terebikko Trivia
  • The Terebikko Video Communication System was released in Japan in 1988 for 5,000 yen (or $45 USD in 2019) and was manufactured by Bandai. It had a limited games lineup and was discontinued in 1994, and had titles based on Hello Kitty, Dragon Ball, Super Mario, Sailor Moon and Q-Taro. Periodically throughout the game, the action would stop and the player would be asked to press one of four buttons, usually focused around a question. Since the game was used on a VHS tape, the only effect of these choices was being told if you were right or wrong, and the story progressed regardless.
  • Given that the second-to-last question is about what Perfect Cell looks like, the Terebikko game probably released no earlier than July 1992, which is when he attains perfection in the manga. It's more likely however that it was October or later, which is when he attained Perfection in the anime. This would place it after The Return of Cooler, the Summer Vacation Special and Super Android 13.
    • If the player is fast and doesn't know the answer to this question, they can get it correctly by looking at the boxart!
  • Cell is featured on the boxart despite only appearing as a surprise character at the very end of the story.
  • Also on the boxart, Bulma appears in the orange hoodie she wore at the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, but doesn't wear it herself during the game.
  • The first 3 minutes and 20 seconds of the Terebikko game show how to set up the Terebikko itself. One wonders how you were supposed to use it before setting it up.
  • Gohan using the Terebikko Capsule is the only time one's been thrown to do something other than release what's inside!
  • Goku and Gohan fly off to meet with Roshi, Bulma and Krillin at Kame House. Were it not for Trunks, this would be the EXACT same setup that began the Saiyan Arc!
  • The air bike shown as Option 1 in the time machine question is the same bike Bulma was using when Goku reunites with her when he arrives at Capsule Corp. for the first time, complete with the number 67!
  • It's debatable if Trunks even could ride Kinto-un given the pure heart requirement. And if it was capable of time travel, Bulma couldn't come with them during the Terebikko game!
  • The airplane shown as Option 4 in the first question is the same plane Goku used to leave Colonel Silver's camp early in the Red Ribbon Arc. It even has the robot pilot!
  • The results of each question focuses on the correct answer, then says either that you got it right or that you were wrong and that this is the right answer. This means the Terebikko game can be boiled down to yes/no operations within its code!
  • Given that Bulma wanted to quiz the player about their past selves and that Gohan already had the Terebikko on him at the start of the story, it's probable that they planned this trip in advance!
  • Roshi pines for the days when he was the strongest person in the world. Ignoring the time machine context, he didn't fare much better against Bulma back then either!
  • In the credits, Kōhei Miyauchi is credited as both Roshi AND Jackie Chun, despite the fact that one of the questions directly reveals that they're the same man!
  • The time machine has a slot JUST for putting in the Terebikko. It's possible Bulma installed it in advance of the trip.
  • The Terebikko game is the first time we see what it's like to be in the time machine during a trip: it appears to travel through a time tunnel similar to Doctor Who and various time travel cartoons. This isn't present in the manga, which appears to go for something more akin to Back to the Future, where the time travel (and spacial travel) is instantaneous.
  • Trunks' understanding of causality when altering past events differs from the manga: Trunks is concerned that interacting with the past will have effects, when in the manga/anime it would have caused a branch, similar to the time travel in Avengers: Endgame when you remove one of the Infinity Stones.
  • Masako Nozawa retains her original performance of Kid Goku with a higher pitch despite having only two vocalizations one line and some shrieking. The performance contrasts nicely with how she plays adult Goku during the game.
  • The Terebikko game is actually harder than it looks because, back when it first released in 1992, it was impossible to watch the anime episodes that show up as quiz questions (Dragon Ball wouldn't be released on home media in Japan until the Dragon Boxes released eleven years later in 2003). Therefore the best way for an uninformed player to get all the questions right is to read the manga. The correct answers appear in 11 different Tankobon (3, 4, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 25, 26, 28 and 32); since they cost 390 yen each, it would have cost players 4,290 yen (or $38.95 USD in 2021) to learn all the correct answers! That's almost the same cost as the Terebikko itself!
    • That said, this ignores hype articles in magazines like Jump which would have recapped the character's various moves and histories, such as the Battle Power page that appeared in Shonen Jump's 31st issue of 1989.
  • Krillin's wording of the second question implies that he and Goku only did one weird thing when training with Roshi. In actuality they did several more, including dodging bees, swimming with sharks, doing underage construction work and plowing fields!
  • Each of the various era the group travels to uses music from that period of the story. This is incredibly appropriate, as Kikuchi would often make new compositions that each arc would focus on, especially during the original Dragon Ball anime. Since this music would be discarded for the next arc, these pieces are highly associated with the eras they're heard in!
  • The only characters to use the Terebikko during the main time travel portion are Krillin and Goku. This allowed the animators to re-use their drawings: Krillin for example almost always closes his eyes and raises his finger at the end of his questions.
  • The fact that Krillin can even confidently ask the Jackie Chun question implies that he learnt his true identity at some point.
  • When Goku explains that they can't turn into Oozaru anymore, only Krillin and Bulma freak out, since they're the only non-Saiyans on the trip.
  • The animation loop of the Oozaru after its question is very similar to the Gohan Oozaru in the original Head Cha-La intro.
  • The 21st Tenkaichi Budokai finals feature the most questions of any era in the Terebikko game, with a total of three (the present however technically has more with the time machine, Cell, and Roshi questions).
  • The frame of Roshi using the Dodon-pa is taken from when Tao used the move after Goku destroyed his clothes.
  • You can tell the script was written by men considering Bulma makes a light-hearted joke about his habit of sexually assaulting her.
  • In Roshi's segment, he claims that he taught Goku how to do the Kamehameha. This is stretching the truth a little bit since Goku learnt the move just by watching Roshi perform it once, meaning any teaching Roshi did was indirect at best.
  • In the Kaio move question, the riddle on the blackboard in Option 1 is "めがみっつ。あしがいっぽん。なーんだ? ナゾナゾ", which Google Translates to "Megamitsu. Ashigaippon. What? Riddle". I don't know what that means.
  • In the Kaio move question, the pun that Roshi says to Goku in Option 4 is "だれもデンワはでんわ", or "Is there anyone getting to the phone". The pun is that the Japanese word for "phone" (denwa) is incredibly similar to the word for "to not get to" (denwa, where the "wa" is a suffix-like addition for tone emphasis).
  • After the Makankosappo question, Roshi doubts that even Goku would be able to survive a direct hit from it. We know this to be true because Piccolo used it to kill both Raditz AND Goku with a single shot!
  • Starting with the Mafuba scene, all the eras use a combination of the original episode footage and new animation. The 21st Training and 21st Tournament scenes were completely re-animated for their appearances in the Terebikko game.
  • In the Mafuba scene, Roshi says that he'll use it to seal off Piccolo Daimao "once again". If the implication is that he's done it before, it's untrue: the previous time Daimao was sealed away, it was done by Roshi's master, Mutaito.
  • Krillin's wording of the Mafuba question is interesting since it implies that Roshi was successful in sealing Piccolo Daimao away. As Krillin finds out a few seconds after revealing the correct answer, Roshi actually missed!
  • The small bottle in Option 2 of the Mafuba question is in fact the jar that God intended to seal Piccolo in during the 23rd Tournament. That also involved the Mafuba, but it's not the right answer since the question is asking about what ROSHI tried to seal Piccolo in.
  • Of the four options in the Mafuba question, the kettle is the only one with a lid that doesn't have a seal provided by friction or a locking mechanism.
  • When the time machine is around God's Lookout, it isn't repelled by him, which Karin says is what God does to machines that get close to it.
  • The God question is the second time Son Gohan is brought up as a possible answer. He had not been seen for several years, and it would be entirely possible for the kid playing to not have any idea who he is!
  • Kakusan Energy Wave, Option 1 of the Vegeta question, is the move Krillin uses to kill all the Saibamen, where one ki beam splits into many.
  • The characters are able to quickly zip over to Namek in an instant, greatly expanding the spacial possibilities of Trunks' time machine!
  • The correct answer to the Porunga question would become out-dated by the end of the Android Arc, where Dende resurrects Shen Long with the ability to grant multiple wishes (it's initially two due thanks to resurrecting many people, but is three all the time by the Buu Arc).
  • The pun Porunga says in Option 4 of his question is "ふどんがふっどんだ", or "the pillows are blown away". This is a pun on how the Japanese word for "pillow" (futon) is very similar to "blown away" (futonda).
  • In the time it takes for Goku to ask the Frieza question, Frieza jumped from his first form to his final form! Time must work REALLY strangely on Namek.
  • Perfect Cell claims he's there to fulfill the will of Dr. Gero. This slightly goes against his motivation during the Cell Games, where he simply wishes to flaunt his enormous power.
  • Perfect Cell feels the need to block Krillin's attacks. This contradicts the anime where he didn't even seem to be aware he was there and had no need to put up his defenses at all.
  • The Terebikko mascot doesn't appear for the final question to pick which Cell to attack. This may be because your choice doesn't matter: if you choose wrong, Goku will punch the right one anyway (although you never get to see which one was the real one in the first place!).
  • At the end of the game, Goku hopes Cell will come back even stronger. This means that Goku has said this (or something like it) about each major antagonist of Dragon Ball Z!
  • In the story of the Terebikko game, Goku and co. don't know who Cell is when they meet him!
Big thanks to Alexius on Discord for help translating the Japanese puns and the riddle!

You should specify 193 is the last episode Nadolny did *chronologically,* because she still did episodes 1-79 years later
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Oh right.

I honestly completely forgot about that.
I have amended the relevant entry.

Technically speaking Bojack Unbound would be the last time Nadolny voices Gohan *chronologically* since it takes place after episode 194. Unless we just mean for the tv series.

Anyways movie 9 was so much fun! Easily my second favorite Z movie after Z movie 1. I really liked the whole tournament amusement park setting. Sure Bojack and his crew were nothing villains but sometimes villains just need to exist for the good guy to beat. How unfortunate that we’ll go from one of the most enjoyable Dragon Ball Z movies to the worst one….

Gohan’s transformation music being repurposed for sad goodbye music in the Boo saga is a great example of just because the music is being made for the movies doesn’t mean it can’t be better used in the series. Same with the joyous music that plays when Tenshinhan and Mirai Trunks fight that ended up being the “the joys of buukujutsu” music for the tv series.

I think Jillian Michaels might have recorded for Gohan a couple more times during flashbacks in the Buu saga. Her voice can be heard during the scene outside Buu's shell, where Gohan tries to access his true power by remembering the Cell Games. And there is another flashback were Majin Vegeta gives Goku a monologue which includes Gohan defeating Cell, and Gohan's voice can briefly be heard.

I'm assuming the lines were re-recorded for the flashbacks and are not the actual original recordings. That seems to be how both the old dubs handled flashbacks and recaps. Come to think of it there may be a recap at the start of the Saiyaman saga that shows Cell's defeat too, so Jillian might have recorded for that too.

I’m pretty sure for the most part whenever Funimation flashbacked to an earlier episode it would be the original audio they already recorded. The only time they recorded for a flashback, afaik, is when it was originally dubbed by the Vancouver cast. And of course any flashbacks to the original Dragon Ball that occurred during the Frieza and Cell sagas were newly recorded for those episodes since there was no Dragon Ball dub to use the audio for..

Prior to Kai flashbacks were almost if not always redone. Recaps too. Sometimes there would even be subtle line changes, like for Kaioken x20 Goku saying "Mark my words, I'm going to win this fight!", instead of "Mark my words, I'm not going to let them down!". Another example is the "Motivational Piccolo" scene which originally ended with him shouting "I can do this! Uggh!", but a Buu saga flashback changed it to "I can do this! Yes!".

I think it varies. I know in the UUE dub whenever they flashbacked to the original Dragon Ball they used audio from 2001-2003 dub (Tenshinhan’s flashback to Chaozu, Bulma’s flashback to Yamcha, Bulma’s flashback to her first adventure with Goku)

I forgot about UUE using audio from the DB dub. Now that I think about it the UUE recaps were consistent with the episodes.

I'm pretty sure GT re-recorded the Z lines, like Goku's SS1 transformation and his conversation with Majin Vegeta during Vegeta's flashback. But it might have had consistent recaps.

It might be everything prior to 2003 or so.

I was literally typing up a post of my own naming these EXACT same examples
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Z movie 9 is my top favorite of the original era films along with 1,3,8 and 13. It was good having a film that actually seemed to more or less fit in with the anime's timeline as it clearly is intended to take place after Goku sacrificed himself again (to no avail) and the end of the Cell Games. Given the rather iffy times most of the others take place in relation to the anime this has by far the least continuity/canon issues, and even if the movie does retread some of the Cell Games stuff again like Goku spiritually appearing to Gohan and giving him the "Man up and get your act together spiel" during the struggle with Bojack it doesn't have quite the same formulaic stuff that a lot of them fall back on and actually feels like a change of pace given the time this came out.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

Z movie 13 also fits pretty neatly between episode 288 and 289. The only minor issues are

1. Shen Long only grants one wish, but that can be dismissed as the plot only needed one wish

2. Tapion gives Little Trunks, Future Trunks sword. Which isn’t a continuity error so much as Toei trying to throw a cute nod in the dumbest way possible and can be handwaved as timeline divergences stuff.

Indeed, that one more or less works in there before the final 10 year time skip after Majin Buu's defeat to the end of the series as far as the manga's end goes. The sword thing felt like some kind of Easter egg or something they threw in even when it doesn't really make a lot of sense though it's an inconsistency i can overlook. I was wondering if they inserted that to imply that's possibly how Future Trunks got his sword but again it's not too big of a deal.

FUNimation definitely used new audio for the flashbacks in GT, at least when it came to the stuff that was part of season 3. I’m pretty sure the flashback of Gohan killing Cell in the final episode also used new audio.

[*]Kuririn wonders who he should take with him to the hot springs around the world. This is in fact the prize for SECOND place; maybe Kuririn's being more realistic than usual?
So I guess we know this takes place before he and 18 started dating :P
[*]Chichi says that if Gohan doesn't keep his strength up, it'll all be for nothing. Cut to ten years later where Vegeta scolds him for not keeping up his training.
Do you mean 7 years?
[*]This is only the second time Gohan has been depicted in the Turtle School gi, the first time being during the Saiyan Training filler arc.
Future Gohan wore it in the Trunks special.

[*]Piccolo enters this Tournament (and the 25th) without using an alias like he did in the 23rd Tournament.
He goes by Ma Junior at the 25th

[*]This is the sixth movie in a row where Piccolo shows up to save Gohan from off-screen.
And sadly (or thankfully depending on your pov) the last.

Yes.

I think KBABZ probably had the Funi dub in mind when writing this, since that's the version he watched on TV.
Maybe the Viz manga also changed it to ten years instead of seven.

True, though KBABZ wrote this trivia based on the manga, where this may be the case. (Or he forgot, and I didn't notice when going over this trivia. Either way, I should really have noticed this and the last one. Whoops!)

Piccolo not showing up is sad. Very underused character after this point.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Funi also had it at 7 years. Unless Kai did 10? Never watched The Final Chapters dubbed.

No idea what the Viz manga did. But with how weird some of their choices are wouldn’t surprise me.

Hm. I was sure Funi screwed the timeline on that one somehow.
