Hello, ladies, gentlemen, and everyone between and beyond, and welcome to week 101 of the first Dragon Ball rewatch of the decade.
We're doing five episodes a week, and we'll be watching every single episode of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT. All 508 episodes. Plus the TV specials and the movies.
I encourage you all to watch in Japanese with subtitles, especially if you have never done so before, but watch along in whichever way brings you the most joy.

The manga comes to an end. But the anime limps marches on until March. Stay tuned for Dragon Ball GT!
Until then, enjoy the best Dragon Ball movie and Toriyama's original ending to Dragon Ball. :)
And enjoy our trivia! KBABZ really outdid himself this week.

Previous thread: Week 100 (DBZ 284-288)
Next thread: Week 102 (GT 1-5)

Anyway, without further ado...

DBZ movie 13 - Dragon Fist Explosion!! If Goku Won't Do it, Who Will?

Animation supervisor: Tadayoshi Yamamuro

Goku and friends are tricked into using the Dragon Balls to release Tapion, who contains the demon Hildegarn within himself. Hildegarn eventually escapes and begins to destroy everything around him. Tapion tries to harness the demon, but it’s of no use. Can anyone but Goku defeat the demon and restore peace?

Episode 442 - Grandpa Goku! I Am Pan!! (DBZ episode 289)
Dub title: Granddaughter Pan
Originally aired 17th of January 1996

Written by: Masashi Kubota
Episode director: Kazuhito Kikuchi
Animation supervisor: Naoki Miyahara

10 years later… Gohan and Videl are married. They have a daughter, Pan. Goten and Trunks are miffed at being forced to enter tomorrow’s Tenka’ichi Budōkai. Only tiny Pan is raring to go. Goku tells Vegeta that someone strong will be at the tournament. The day of the tournament, Satan and Boo make an under-the-table deal regarding the fights in their waiting room. But Satan starts sweating bullets when he hears that Goku has entered the tournament. Goku comforts him by promising to lose on purpose. Goku and the others pass the preliminaries.

Anime-only/filler content: The intro sequence with Trunks is significantly longer, involving Chichi, Videl, and a TV showing Mr. Satan. Goku is shown sparring with Goten before Vegeta and Bulma show up, Goku and Pan wandering around the tournament grounds together, the gang running into Kuririn.

Episode 443 - I Am Oob! Now 10 Years Old, the Former Majin?! (DBZ episode 290)
Dub title: Buu's Reincarnation
Originally aired 24th of January 1996

Episode director: Yoshihiro Ueda
Animation supervisor: Yukio Ebisawa

The main tournament begins!! Goku asks Boo to use his magic to rig the lottery so that he’ll go up against a boy named “Oob”. Goku has sensed that Oob is the reincarnation of the evil Majin Boo that was defeated ten years ago. The first match is Pan vs Mō Kekko, a huge man over two meters tall. Satan can’t help but be worried for his granddaughter, but Pan knocks Mō Kekko out with just one kick. The second match is Goku vs Oob. Goku makes Oob angry to try and draw out his true power.

Anime-only/filler content: Some conversations before the draw, 18 and Kuririn chatting a little, Videl and Gohan cheering on Pan before her first fight.

Episode 444 - Even Stronger!! Goku’s Dream is Super-Huge (DBZ episode 291)
Dub title: Goku's Next Journey
Originally aired 31st of January 1996

Written by: Masashi Kubota
Episode director: Takahiro Imamura
Animation supervisor: Shingo Ishikawa

Oob learns how to fight as he battles, and goes toe-to-toe with Goku. Having confirmed Oob’s strength, Goku stops the fight and offers his hand to help Oob. “I’ll teach you how to fight. That way, you’ll get even stronger.” Goku tells his friends that he’ll be leaving them for just a little while, and flies off with Oob into the southern sky. In order to raise a warrior to protect the peace. In order to challenge his own limits. And so, a story has ended, and a future has begun!

Anime-only/filler content: Most of Goku and Oob's fight, various reactions to the fighting, Goku giving more of a goodbye before leaving, the ending montage.

Interesting trivia about Z movie 13:
  • At this point in time, the anime was up to Vegetto fighting Boo in a mostly-filler episode, while the manga had ended two months earlier.
  • The Funimation subtitle for this movie (Wrath of the Dragon) is rather contentious, for while there's plenty of wrath in the movie, outside of Shen Long's early appearance there's no dragon until the last seconds of the movie. This is because it's an obfuscation on the original subtitle, "Dragon Fist Explosion!!!", however this is only slightly less tenuous because the titular move is not foreshadowed in any way and is only used at the very end of the movie. At the very least, both do not spoil the plot.
  • Z movie 13 is the first movie since Z movie 9 (the one with Bojack) to have sound effects on the opening vanity plate. It's the ninth and final of the classic movies to do so, among the DB trilogy, and Z movies 1, 2, 5, and 6.
  • This movie has no OP, however the movie's theatrical poster has credits for We Gotta Power, indicating it may have had the standard opening in place until a very late stage in production.
  • Z movie 13 is the first of two classic Dragon Ball movies to be released in stereo. In fact, it was mixed in Dolby Stereo, which means that if you use the right decoding techniques, you can watch it in surround sound. Unfortunately, all of Funimation's releases of the movie's Japanese audio are downmixed to mono, so this effect is lost on their releases.
    • A couple of the other movies later received stereo mixes, most notably the third Broly movie, in the form of drama CD/cassette releases that use the original mono mix of the sound effects and dialogue with a stereo mix of all the music.
  • Considering that Goku and Vegeta are alive in this movie, it could be seen as the true "Post-Boo" movie that Z movie 12 attempted to be. There is still one twist however: it did not anticipate that Toriyama would bring back Fat Boo as a good guy. A possible in-universe explanation for his absence is he fell asleep waiting for the post-Broly season of Super to get announced.
  • The car that the gunners drive is a yellow Corvette Stingray.
  • This is the final time a Dragon Ball Z product would do the catching bullets trick. In a first, the bullets are all flat, meaning that Gohan scrunched them in his fist rather than catching them gently like in every other instance.
  • Once again Gohan uses the bandanna and shades disguise as in Fusion Reborn, rather than the orange helmet like what Videl wears.
  • The "spotlights" pose was reused for Videl's intro in Dragon Ball FighterZ, where Gohan (as Great Saiyaman) is her assist character for certain special moves. Via a hidden button press on the character select screen, Videl can be changed to her original dual-ponytail design, but this also changes Gohan to use the orange helmet.
  • In the Japanese script, the two Saiyamans are designated Mark I and Mark II (which is funny because it's later revealed that Videl's father is named Mark). In the Funimation dub, Videl instead adopts the name of Great Saiyawoman.
  • Videl getting in on the Saiyaman act is a bit of a contradiction as she considered him a loser over his silly poses and outfit. It's possible that becoming romantically involved with him changed her opinion.
  • As pointed out by Shapna, Gohan had no reason make excuses for going to the bathroom considering he gave up the act during the last Tournament and revealed his identity to the public.
  • Among the students in Gohan's class is someone dead asleep, and a small green fox reminiscent of Konkichi from the Worldly Training filler (which would be appropriate because he said he'd become a teacher when we last saw him).
  • Interestingly Videl responds to her watch as Saiyaman Mark II rather than Videl, meaning she isn't currently keeping her identity a secret.
  • As well, in the close-up of her responding to her watch, the classmate next to her is drooling at the sight of her.
  • After rescuing the old man, Videl has her helmet visor up, which is what the heart shape on it is for. This mechanism is present on Gohan's helmet as well, and is a mechanism present on real fighter jet helmets.
  • Conuts is of course a pun on coconuts, while Tapion is named after tapioca.
  • Tapion being sealed inside a music box may seem odd, however it's arguably less odd than Piccolo Daimao being sealed inside a rice cooker.
  • This isn't the first time Gohan is put under a test of strength for a mystical artefact, having already done it with the Z Sword.
  • This is the first Dragon Ball movie to explicitly depict the BACK of Capsule Corp, where everything above the upper floor has been cut away to make room for an open-air balcony. It does however lack the second tower shown as recently as the last movie, as well as its usual perimiter fence. In the shot of the front as the Dragon Team departs, the fence is back, one of the side-buildings is green and the property is much wider than it usually is.
  • In the first half of the movie, Goten wears a singlet with dark pants and a blue belt, making him appear INCREDIBLY similar to how his father did when training under Master Roshi.
  • Goku doesn't notice the red flag that Hoi isn't from Earth, despite his story to Gohan about Tapion in the South Galaxy (they're in the North Galaxy). Given Earth's past history of invading aliens (Piccolo, the Saiyans, Freeza, Babidi...), you'd think he'd be a bit more cautious.
  • Kuririn complains that he set off on his own, forgetting that he could have brought 18 with him.
  • Of the various figures that occupy the bushes with Kuririn, the mummy looks like Bandages while another looks like Spike the Devilman. Frankenstein's monster obviously looks like Hatchan, while the werewolf looks appropriately like Man-Wolf from the 22nd Tournament.
  • It isn't explained exactly how the various members of the Dragon Team even find the Dragon Balls, as none of them carry Dragon Radars, or indeed any means of navigation that might tell them if they're near where the Dragon Radar told them it would be. While there are possibly four Dragon Radars by this point in the story, there's five teams looking for the Dragon Balls.
  • In the wide shot of the zoo, one of the men at the bottom of the page is Dr. Slump, with his surname on his T-Shirt. He's standing in front of a woman who looks like Street Fighter's Chun-Li.
  • Goku having the lion biting the top of his head gives him an appearance similar to most depiction of the greek hero Herakles (also known as Heracles, later adopted by the Romans as Hercules), who killed the Nemean Lion as one of his twelve labors.
  • By this point, the phrase used to summon Shen Long has consistently been "Come forth Shen Long". It's varied in the past, meaning that all that's really required is a general command for the dragon to emerge. This is why it never worked for Freeza: other than not speaking Namekian, he had no idea a dragon was even involved in the process and so commanded his wish directly to the Dragon Balls instead.
  • The footage of Shen Long being summoned is recycled wholesale from Z movie 12, likely to save on animation time and because they both take place at Capsule Corp.
  • In the aerial shot of the Dragon Balls dispersing, Capsule Corp has the perimeter fence and the rear cutaway doesn't extend to the top plate of the building. The furniture on the deck is also missing, and the side building is back to yellow again.
  • As is tradition, the sound of the Dragon Balls dispersing uses the same sound effects as they did back in the Pilaf Arc. This is the final time the anime would depict the Earth's Dragon Balls dispersing after they've been used... in their usual manner, at least.
  • Appropriately, Trunks reacts excitedly to Tapion's sword.
  • With his sword, stern demeanour towards his enemies, tortured past, strong sense of justice and self-sacrificing nature, Tapion is very similar to Future Trunks.
  • Considering the connection to Hildegarn, it isn't very smart of Tapion to reside in a highly populated area of Earth.
  • KBABZ approves of the dinner choice at Capsule Corp. Flawless again!
  • The soldiers that appear in West City during the Hildegarn legs attack are dressed like the King's guard way back in the original Dragon Ball, which was then reused for the Mifan Empire's Red Ribbon Army in Mystical Adventure.
  • Clearly, Hildegarn didn't skip leg day.
  • Gohan notably does not use Super Saiyan in this movie, reflecting the upgrade that he recieved from Elder Kaioshin.
  • Videl is notably less combative in this movie (and the last one) compared to her more stern and direct approach when crimefighting in the Boo arc. For example, Gohan has to grab her hand to get her out of the way of Hildegarn's tail when she's perfectly capable of flying herself.
  • This is the only Dragon Ball movie to have a consistent musical theme that permeates through the score and used in different ways. Typically the movies re-use themes from the show, or make one exclusively for the villain. In Robo's opinion, this movie is Kikuchi's best work, largely due to how the central theme ties the whole score together. It also helps that the theme was also arranged into a fully-produced and very cool song that may have been considered for the end-credits song at one point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvfNHR-z77A
  • This is the second movie in a row showing Videl doing the dishes, this time with the motherly figure of the other Dragon Ball family line: Bulma.
  • According to the geography presented in the movie, the factory Tapion resides in has been in viewing distance of Capsule Corp the entire time.
  • The characters refer to Tapion's instrument as a flute, but it is closer to an ocarina, an instrument made famous by the Legend of Zelda series, especially in 1998. At the time this movie came out, it had already been used in Link's Awakening and A Link to the Past. In both Zelda and this movie, the ocarina has magical effects when you playa specific piece of music on it. As well, both are played by pointy-eared sword-wielders displaced in time.
  • The toy car that crashes into the dinnerplate is a Lamborghini Countach, while the green alien toy Trunks plays with is King Nikochan from Dr. Slump. The T. Rex meanwhile may be a reference to Jurassic Park, which popularized the horizontal posture of dinosaurs and featured a brown T. Rex.
  • One of the posters on Trunks' wall shows a green vehicle with a tapered shape. This is in fact the same Suziki featured on the front of Tankobon #13.
  • It isn't explained why exactly a music box keeps Tapion safe and secure, but considering his race and backstory is very magic-based, it doesn't take a big leap to figure it out.
  • The lower half of Hildegarn leaving behind clothes is similar to Cell's assimilation of humans in his incomplete forms.
  • Z movie 13 is the only Dragon Ball movie to date with a kaiju villain.
  • This is the second movie in a row where Vegeta doesn't appear until the last 15 minutes of the movie, replacing Piccolo in the "Late Ar-Rival" role. Piccolo himself has not been seen in a Dragon Ball movie since Bojack Unbound.
  • This movie is the subject of a famous line of fansub dialogue. For comparison:
    • Simmons subtitles: "Smash up another man’s house, will you?! I am in a foul mood today! Don’t come too close, or you’ll get burned!"
    • Anime labs fansubs: "You fucking bastard! You dare to destroy my house! Now you’ve really pissed me off! Fuck you!"
  • This movie is also the first time Vegeta is depicted abjectly protecting the people of Earth by projecting the kiai shield around the skyscraper window.
  • The awning that Videl falls through has an appropriate Satan sign on it.
  • In one of the wide shots of the destroyed city, a sign on the left days "Redinurana". It's not known what this is referring to.
  • A shot of civilians running away has a yellow Beetle on the right side of the screen. Aside from being Bumblebee's alt mode in G1 Transformers, a Beetle was the vehicle used by Bulma in the approach to Fire Mountain way back in the Pilaf Arc.
  • In the close-up of Trunks holding the sword in front of him, the reflection of Tapion in the blade is appropriately split into two different perspectives like it realistically would be.
  • Once again the movie borrows elements from the most recent storyline: in this case, a short wizard in robes is killed by the very monster he was trying to free and order about, just like Babidi.
  • The shot of Trunks cutting Hildegarn's tail has him use the same pose his Future self did in his first stroke on Mecha Freeza.
  • Before using the titular Dragon Fist, Goku drops the title of the movie, saying "If I can't do it, who will?!". He then uses the Dragon Fist itself in an explosive rage, fully completing the title.
  • The time machine Bulma uses is presumably the spare time machine from the Cell Arc, the one that Cell used to travel to the past after assassinating Future Trunks. It's cleaner than before, meaning Bulma at least gave it some TLC before letting Tapion use it.
  • Despite the movie's strong implications, Tapion's sword CANNOT be the one Future Trunks uses in the Android Arc. This is because Tapion had to be released from the Music Box using the Dragon Balls, which in Future Trunks' time had long been dead thanks to the death of Piccolo when Trunks was an infant. Thus in the original Future Trunks timeline, Tapion's sword remains sealed with him in the music box.
  • Tapion's sword also has one major design difference compared to Future Trunks' sword: the blade is much thicker and tapers outwards from the base. Trunks' sword meanwhile has parallel blade edges and is longer. That in mind, it's possible that Future Trunks' sword is a different one left behind by somebody else. One theory would be that Hoi had one but discarded it while on Earth, which Future Trunks then found.
Interesting trivia about Z episodes 289-291:
  • Missed Trivia: Soon after reuniting with his friends at the 23rd Tenkaichi, Tenshinhan refers to Roshi as "Lord" (in the ViZ translation), showing high respect towards him.
  • Missed Trivia: Thanks to the intros, Kinto'Un appears in every single episode of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.
  • Missed Trivia: The Namekian Dragon Balls have only been shown dispersing once, after Dende is able to wish everyone away to Earth to save them from Freeza.
  • The final three episodes / two Chapters of the story are often referred to by fans as "EoZ", or "End of Z". This is used to differentiate it from the Boo arc overall.
  • Rather infamously, the entirity of Super takes place within the 10 year timeskip from the Boo arc to End of Z, and strains the credibility of how old Trunks and Goten look. For example, in the later Super stories Trunks is the same age his Future counterpart was in the first half of the Trunks Special, but he appears the same age he did in the Boo arc.
    • Further, in Chapter 518 Bulma complains that the last time she saw Goku was five years prior while he was in-between training sessions. It's possible that as far as Super is concerned, a version of End of Z happens, but not the one from the manga or anime.
    • That said, in the "Son Goku Densetsu" guidebook (from 2003, a year after the Kanzenban release), Toriyama said that for a new animated story he'd set it during this exact period of time (in order to avoid overlapping with GT's time period), albeit in a manner more akin to the Jump Special, a "separate episode", rather than what Super developed into.
  • It was later revealed that Toriyama did all of the artwork for the End of Z chapters by himself because he no longer had an inking assistant, putting even more pressure on him when making a chapter for the week.
  • The titles for every episode introducing one of Goku's successors features the same phrase. Z Episode 1 has "I'm Gohan!", 289 has "I Am Pan!!" and 290 has "I Am Oob!". Goten doesn't count as a Goku successor, since Gohan had embodied that role at the end of the Cell Arc (and he's never called out in this way in an episode title anyway).
  • Z episode 289 is the first episode (of only three) to use music from Z movie 13.
  • The first panel of End of Z depicts a bird on a tree branch. This mirrors the very first panel of the manga, which had a monkey hanging from a tree branch.
  • During End of Z, Trunks wears a short vest with a high collar plus a blue long-sleeved shirt, making him visually similar to his Future counterpart.
  • End of Z marks the first time that Future Trunks' voice is heard from the Trunks born in the altered timeline where Goku survives the Heart Virus. This is appropriate because End of Z takes place the same year that Future Trunks leaves in the time machine in the original, "bad" future. Also appropriately, Trunks is the first character we see in End of Z, whose Future counterpart is responsible for this happy ending in the first place.
    • This entry is most stark in the English dubs, but despite both the young and adult Trunks having the same actor in Japan, there is still a significant difference in his performance between the young and adult Trunks, and while his performance reflects EoZ Trunks's different life experiences, he still voices the character more similar to Future Trunks than Boo arc Trunks.
  • In the Funimation dub of Kai, Trunks says that his aircar is out of gas. This is likely to make his act of getting out and flying make more sense: in Japanese he says he switches because it's too slow, which you'd think he'd realize long before this point.
  • The exact location of Gohan and Videl's house isn't clarified. In the manga there are rolling hills in the background, meaning it's probably not West City nor the area Goku's old house is. In the anime, it's at the edge of a river cliff.
  • The anime also expands on this new residence: it's actually two houses, the yellow being for Goku and Chichi, and the white for Gohan and Videl, and adds a new scene where Trunks bumps into Chichi to show this. In the manga Gohan's house appears to be on its own, since Chichi's is never shown.
  • Chichi reacts to Trunks as if she knew he was there because he was knocking on the door. However as shown in a later scene, Trunks' flight sounds like a rocket and is loud enough to alert Goten before he lands.
  • The title page for Chapter 518 establishes that Gohan and Videl married. Since the anime doesn't have title pages, this bit of exposition is shown by Trunks observing a photo of Gohan and Videl on their wedding day.
  • Gohan's hairstyle is the same one Yamucha used in the Android Arc.
  • In the anime, the TV that Mr. Satan's ad plays on is the very first instance of a widescreen TV in the series. It's still a CRT, of course, the episode was made in 1996 after all!
  • In Dragon Ball Kai, Mr. Satan's ad is preceded and followed by total silence, rather than other ads or whatever show happens to be on. In Z, however, the TV plays a weather report throughout the scene, although it still ends with silence afterwards.
  • Speaking of which, the weather report mis-spells Weather as "Wether", which happens to be a word for a castrated lamb. A Wether Report is definitely explicit reporting.
  • Among the books in Gohan's library in the anime, there are books named "Charles Darwin", "Origin of the Species", Charles Darwin's Marginarlia" (Marginarlia is a fancy word for margin notes), "Jump" and "Arale".
  • Trunks must REALLY be slacking in his training if he's struggling to hold a stack of books!
  • The manga never makes clear that anyone other than Goku and Vegeta remember Boo. While clever wording can get around it, a general wish of "everyone on Earth should forget about Boo" would logically include Mr. Satan, Videl, Chichi, Trunks, Kuririn, 18 and so-on. The anime meanwhile clarifies that the Dragon Team at least still remembers it, since Videl makes note of it.
  • Interestingly, Gohan's home has picture frames showing Namek and the Kaioshin realm, the two non-Earth worlds he's spend a large amount of time on and received abject power-ups from the Grand Elder and Old Kaioshin.
  • In the manga, the title page of Chapter 518 is the first time Marron or Bee have had their names revealed (similarly, Bra is only named on this title page and not within the manga story itself). It also shows that Roshi got a new pair of sunglasses, 388 Chapters after Tenshinhan broke one of them in the 22nd Tournament.
    • Bee's name is a pun with Boo's in the same way as Shu and Mai: together they form Boobee. When you consider that Boo and Oob can also be combined to make Boooob, it's pretty clear that his name should be spelt "Boo", rather than "Buu", so that these puns are made most clear.
  • The new additions to the Dragon Team's third generation are three in total and have three-letter names: Pan, Bra and Oob.
  • Chapter 518's title page also explains that Goten changed his general appearance so that he wouldn't look like his father. This is likely because Goten was created as a Kid Goku analogue, which became redundant when he was reintroduced as a major character.
  • Gabe Khouth was a late new addition to the Ocean cast for Z episode 289, voicing Goten. He was most well known for voicing Nicol Amalfi in Gundam SEED, Hector in MacGyver, and Victor Criss in the 1990 It miniseries. He sadly passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2019. His brother Sam Vincent (most famous for having played Double D in Ed Edd n' Eddy) acted as him and hosted a webseries called Life of Gabe as a tribute to his brother.
  • In Dragon Ball Z, the start of the scene where Goku spars with Goten plays a cue known as "Severe Training". This was first heard in Episode 11 of Dragon Ball, for the scene where Pilaf walks confidently down a hallway with the Dragon Balls. At 431 episodes, it holds the record for the longest time between a Dragon Ball music cue's debut and its final use.
  • Goku has yet another costume change for End of Z. He's reverted to a tied belt, his gi is now in two parts with a longer shirt that goes below the belt, and his boots now have wraps around the ankles similar to Kuririn when he first appeared.
    • In the manga, Goku's End of Z gi is given an inked-black shirt and grey pants, which reflect the green colouring on the very last title page. The anime however changes the shirt to cyan, rather than keeping it green like on Chapter 519's title page. Toriyama altered it again for GT by making his pants yellow and his armbands pink (which may explain why it's cyan for the anime's End of Z in the first place).
  • In the manga, Goku is depicted with his hands clasping his belt or on his hips 15 times, 10 of which are in the scene with Goten, Bulma and Vegeta.
  • Vegeta explains that Saiyans remain in their prime longer since they're a race of natural-born fighters. However he makes no comment on their actual lifespans (which would probably be immortal, if Toei had their way).
  • After Goku points out that Bulma's really gotten old (insulting her similarly to when they met up at the 23rd Tournament), she says she'll ask Shen Long to make her younger. As revealed in the Super: Broly movie, Bulma's already been doing this, but only by six months at a time so that nobody would notice anything (which actually explains why Bulma specifically doesn't age much in Super).
  • The moment where Vegeta senses about for ki is the final time that ki sensing is called out in Dragon Ball Z.
  • When discussing the mystery fighter that Goku wants to meet at the Tournament, in the anime Vegeta brings up the possibility that it's an Android, which Goku confirms isn't the case.
  • Interestingly, in the manga Goku notes that he's been keeping an eye on Oob before this point. This beat is not included in The Final Chapters (thank goodness).
  • Pan of course continues the tradition of Goku's family line being named after grain, with Pan being a name for bread in a great number of languages.
  • Pan's gi is rather similar to Goku's in End of Z, only it's orange with a dark red belt and armbands.
  • Goten's gi meanwhile has a fold in the front, making it very similar to Goku's "Whis" gi from the Resurrection of F era of Dragon Ball Super.
  • In the anime, Goku says that Pan is the only one in the family with any guts for fighting, which explains why he focuses on teaching her.
  • Bulma is shocked to hear that Pan is going to compete against grownups, when both Goku and Kuririn did that very thing two Tournaments in a row.
  • The wide shot of the island confirms that, in the anime at least, the new Tournament grounds are there. It's unlikely that this is Papaya Island: this island has mountains, and Piccolo flattened everything around the original Tournament grounds at the end of the 23rd Tournament.
  • The panel of the Tournament Gates show the gates from the exact same angle as the cover art for Tankobon #3.
  • The actual number of this Tournament is not given in the manga. Incidentally, neither was the one in the Boo arc!
  • For the Tournament, Vegeta dresses in a singlet with sweatpants and boots, effectively a civilian version of his Boo arc outfit. Trunks meanwhile is in a black singlet with a yellow belt similar to his appearance when returning to his future at the end of the Cell Arc.
  • The End of Z Tournament is the only Tournament to not show anybody hit or damage the "oni face" wall. It does however feature two characters hit the walls at the bottom of the grandstands.
  • In Z, a filler scene exists where Goku spends time with Pan at the Tournament stalls, before getting her ice cream spilt by a watch thief and crying. This scene is cut in Kai, and as a result, so is the ice cream Pan eats in the scene described below.
  • The anime adds a scene where the Son and Briefs family meet the rest of the Dragon Team. Here, Kuririn notes how bewildering it is that Goku's a grandpa, mirroring the reveal in the first episode of Dragon Ball Z where Goku reveals he sired a son.
  • Among Mr. Satan's various prizes is... a unicycle??
  • It's easy to forget, but Pan is related to both the false Champion of Earth (Mr. Satan) and the real Champion of Earth (Goku), and both are her grandparents!
  • In the scene where Goku and Pan visit Mr. Satan, there's a shot of Boo waving to Goku. In Z, Boo simply mumbles, while in The Final Chapters, he says hello to Goku. However Funimation opted to just have Boo mumble, accidentally making it more accurate to Z!
  • Just like the previous Tournament, Toriyama completely skips over the preliminary rounds. It isn't confirmed if they used the Punching Machine or not.
  • Thanks to Mr. Satan's lack of tact, the Dragon Ball Gang are initially seated just meters away from the arena, just like in the old days!
    • This also means Mr. Satan plopped Dende, aka GOD, in front of everybody in the stands!
    • In an easily-missed detail, Gyuumao is holding one of the umbrella shades like a parasol!
    • This is the first time Android 18 has worn red, outside of the Red Ribbon logo on her vest in the Android Arc. Typically she prefers blue, black and white
  • In the shot of Bulma and Bra looking out of their window seat, there's a can of "Cake" on the windowsill. Since it's silver, it must be Diet Cake.
  • Oob's mohawk is possibly a visual allusion to Boo's head tentacle, only it bends forwards rather than backwards.
  • As a bit of foreshadowing, in the aerial shot of the finalists, Oob is standing apart from most of the other fighters.
  • The final episode and Chapter of Z is the only time we see the back of the new Tournament stands, as well as the geography of the surrounding area.
  • Episode 290 opens with a filler scene of Knock intimidating Oob and Pan crying after losing her balance doing a handstand and crashing into Mo Kekko. Overall Pan's filler scenes make her feel more like a wimp, which is probably another reason why they were cut from The Final Chapters.
  • The anime plays up Otokosuki's more... effimate qualities moreso than the manga did. In one instance he makes Goten incredibly uncomfortable, and in Japanese he tells Trunks that there's one "weird bastard" with them. Funimation however opted to have Goten say that "everyone's really friendly" for The Final Chapters instead.
  • Goku asks Boo to fix the seeding of the finalists, much like Tenshinhan did back in the 22nd Tournament. Unlike the manga, the anime shows how Boo is able to rig the draw: by physically changing the number written on the ball. In the 22nd Tournament, Chaozu rigged it by controlling all the papers at once and giving the drawer a specific one.
  • Kuririn is justified in not entering: the Tenkaichi Budokai typically only rewards the winner of the tournament.
  • In the anime, Goku asking for Killerno's ball to be altered turns out to be redundant, since he grabs the 12 ball.
  • If Boo only alters the balls that are being drawn, that means that there should be two balls marked with 12 and two marked with 4. Presumably Boo swaps the numbers rather than only changing the ball being drawn, since he's done this before with Mr. Satan.
  • The audience or the Announcer fail to notice that Oob and Boo have incredibly similar names!
  • Strangely, Toriyama includes a classic grid page detailing all twelve finalists, which spoils Oob's identity three pages before Goku reveals it to Vegeta.
  • Oob enters the Tournament hoping to win the money to buy food for his village. This is extremely similar to Nam, who wanted to win the money to buy water for his village.
  • Oob is rather frightened of how big the world outside his village is. This suggests that he's quite sheltered, much like Goku was at the start of his journey. Like Gohan however, he's very nervous about it, but is also exceedingly polite to everybody, making him a combination of the two characters.
  • In the manga, Bra, 18 and Marron don't have any dialogue during End of Z.
  • The only direct foreshadowing that Toriyama makes regarding the end of the manga is a panel at the bottom of Chapter 518's last page, saying that "Something exciting is going to happen in the next episode of Dragon Ball!!!! What will it be?? Don't get your hopes up!!".
  • Said panel is the last appearance of Tori-bot in the manga.
  • Chapter 519's cover is the final time that Goku is depicted holding Nyoi-bo in the manga. Unless you count the next piece of trivia:
  • The first page of Chapter 519 shows the moment Goku and Bulma met, with Bulma next to her wrecked Renault showing the Dragon Radar to a suspicious Goku, introducing him to the Dragon Balls. This is a romanticization: Bulma didn't tell Goku about the Dragon Balls until they were in Gohan's hut, and didn't show him the Dragon Radar until they exited it to start their adventure proper.
  • Toriyama's comment on Chapter 519's first page says that the story has "at last" reached the present, an idea not introduced until now (the manga began with the words "Long, long ago", but it has never claimed to be making its way towards any "present time" until now). It's most likely meant to reflect that the end of the story has come, because anything else hasn't happened yet.
  • To extrapolate from the above, if End of Z is meant to be 1995, then the start of Dragon Ball would be 1960, since 35 years passes between Goku meeting Bulma and End of Z. 1960 is the birth year of several notable Dragon Ball staff:
    • Hiromi Tsuru - The original voice actress of Bulma, the first person Goku ever meets in the story and is present in every manga arc along with Goku.
    • Tadayoshi Yamamuro - The most notable of Dragon Ball artists that aren't Toriyama, considering how prolific his art is among Dragon Ball's promotional and key art.
    • Fuyuto Takeda - Toriyama's third editor, and the last during the original manga's run (he suggests to Toriyama to make Mr. Satan more present in the story).
    • Shinichi Ishihara - Singer of ten Dragon Ball Z insert songs.
    • The 1960s is also when Toriyama's favourite anime, Astro Boy, aired on Japanese television.
    • 1960 is also the birth year of Wendee Lee, who voiced Bulma as well in the 1989 Harmony Gold dub of Dragon Ball, and reprised this role in Bang Zoom's 2015 dub of Super. David Gasman was also born in this year; he voiced adult Goku, Bardock, Oolong and Future Gohan in the AB Groupe/Bridge Entertainment dub of the Dragon Ball movies.
  • The final Chapter of Dragon Ball takes place in a Tournament: a Tournament Arc is what helped Dragon Ball pick up a LOT of new readers after the opening arc and helped accelerate towards its whirlwind success.
  • In the anime, Mo Kekko tells Pan to go home and suck on her mother's milk while she still can. This is obfuscated in the ViZ translation as "she should be home nursing!". Funimation meanwhile doesn't even attempt this and ignores the line entirely.
  • In the anime, Knock calls Vegeta an old man, ironic considering Bulma called Saiyans freaks for never aging. This is likely because he's a young delinquent who doesn't respect anyone over the age of 29.
  • By the rules established in the anime version of the 21st Tournament, Vegeta should be disqualified for punching out Knock, which would be easy to prove considering he did it in the middle of the ring in front of a packed audience. In Z Vegeta's claim actually works thanks to showing the updated whiteboard, while The Final Chapters cuts past it. In fairness, Knock did directly tell Vegeta to die.
  • As mentioned by the Announcer, the End of Z Tournament started with 114 contestants. For comparison, the 21st Tournament had 137, the 22nd had 182, the 23rd had 72, and the Boo Arc Tournament had 228 (194 adults and 34 youths).
  • In Dragon Ball Z, the echo for the Announcer's voice disappears whenever the microphone is away from his mouth during his "microphone baton act". This suggests that nobody can hear him in these moments.
  • Also in Z, the tournament officials do the drumroll and gong strike to initiate the start of the match, which hadn't been done since the original 21st Tournament. This detail is removed in The Final Chapters, but we will hear this one more time in Dragon Ball's other ending.
  • A man in the stands is shown wearing a hat and shirt with the same Y as on Knock's shirt, suggesting he's a fan (or they both happened to buy the same sponsored clothing?). He's also wearing what appears to be a single Potara earring.
  • Pan defeats Mo Kekko very similarly to Kuririn beating the Orin Temple bully in the 21st Tournament: they both jump into the air, land on one foot, and then launch into a flying kick that sends their opponent into the wall. The only difference is that Pan slapped her opponent in the face while in the air, and Kuririn leapt over his opponent. Kuririn's match is the second Tournament match in the manga, while Pan's is the second-to-last!
  • Much like her uncle Goten and her grandfather Goku, Pan respectfully bows to her opponent.
  • As Trunks points out, Mr. Satan is worried if Pan is okay despite Pan being the only person to make an attack in a match she won in a few seconds.
  • The Announcer makes the rare suggestion that some matches have all but been decided already: he says the audience can look forward to Goku's next match with Mr. Boo, suggesting that Goku will defeat Oob and Boo will defeat Goten. While these are the obvious results, it's somewhat disrespectful of him to allude as much.
  • Over the course of the final two chapters, we learn very little about Oob. He's the 10 year old reincarnation of Pure Boo, is the strongest in his village, lives on a tropical island, was advised not to go by his mother, and is the oldest of five brothers and sisters. It's likely that his father is also alive.
  • At 10 years old, Oob is two years younger than Goku when he first entered the Tenkaichi Budokai, which goes to show how Toriyama's drawing style has evolved regarding children.
  • In the anime, the island Oob comes from is actually named: South Island. This is perhaps the island off the coast of South City, which is where Androids 19 and 20 first appeared. Dr. Gero (as Android 20) would destroy every building on the island, meaning it's possible that a village was established in the 20 years since (this is pure speculation, however).
  • In the manga, Dende is surprised to hear Piccolo say that Goku vs Oob is the match of the day. In the anime, Dende instead agrees with him, likely to reflect that he has a God's insight like Piccolo does.
  • The anime adds a Satan blimp that floats over the arena, casting a shadow that passes over Oob. This is visually similar to the anime's depiction of the 22nd Tournament's finals, where a cloud passes over the arena while Tenshinhan internally reckons with himself.
  • In Dragon Ball Z's Japanese version, Goku accuses Oob of pretending to be a nice boy in front of everyone. In the manga, and The Final Chapters, Goku says that it's HE who pretends to be nice in public.
  • In both Z and The Final Chapters, Goku learns that Oob reacts poorly to people who insult his parents by saying her belly button sticks out. In the manga, it's because he called her shit. Further, in the Japanese and Funimation versions of The Final Chapters, Goku calls her a dingleberry (aka a piece of poo stuck in one's crack). In Z, she's "a pile of poo", while in the ViZ manga, she's a "poopy pants".
    • So yes, Toriyama managed to sneak in one last poop reference before retiring from serialized manga.
  • It takes Goku three tries before he successfully trash talks someone for the first time, at least intentionally.
  • In Funimation dub of The Final Chapters, Goku calls himself "a mean bastard", will "kick [Oob's] ass" and threatens to kill him (poorly, we must add).
  • The end of Episode 290 has a Next Episode Preview for both 291 and the first episode of GT. This was likely done to let the audience know that Dragon Ball would in fact be continuing in two weeks time with a new show rather than stopping at Z's final episode. This is only present for the original airing of Episode 290: later airings, and the Dragon Boxes, use the whole 30 seconds previewing Episode 291 instead.
    • Here are both previews, for anyone interested. This video recreated the 290 preview by referencing a video capture of a fansub tape.
    • Incidentally, the Next Episode Preview for GT at the end of Z 291 uses every single shot used in the preview at the end of Z 290!
  • In Z, after Goku flies back from Oob punching him, he gets up and says "I'm starting to get excited!". Being excited before a titanic fight is something he first noted shortly before touching down on Namek (interestingly, before fighting Raditz he said he was terrified).
  • In the anime, Vegeta notes that Oob is able to learn how to fight mid-combat. This likely stems from Boo's talent of learning moves as soon as he sees them.
  • The first and last episode of every Dragon Ball series has Goku in the title, with the exception of Dragon Ball (first episode only) and Super (last episode only).
    • Dragon Ball: Bulma and Son Goku
    • Dragon Ball Z: Mini Goku is Just Precious! I'm Gohan / Even Stronger!! Goku's Dream is Super-Huge
    • Dragon Ball Z Kai: Prologue to Battle! The Return of Goku! / Even Stronger! Goku's Dream is Never Ending!!
    • Dragon Ball GT: The Mysterious Dragon Balls Appear!! Goku Becomes a Child?! / Goodbye Goku... Until the Day We Meet Again
    • Dragon Ball Super: A Miraculous Conclusion! Farewell Goku! Until the Day We Meet Again!!
  • Z episode 291 was the last time Shinsuke Kikuchi's score would be used with new Dragon Ball content (with a slight exception with Dragon Ball Kai's replacement score, the 2008 OVA, and some video games). His association with Toriyama's work began in 1981 when he was hired to compose the music for Dr. Slump and Arale-chan, Dragon Ball's immediate predecessor as both an anime and a manga. He had an illustrious career as a composer, and continued to make music until 2017, when he retired due to illness. He passed away in April 2021.
    • The Funimation and Ocean dubs also saw a change in music at this point; Faulconer Productions were replaced with Mark Menza after this point for Funimation, and Ocean switched to using the original Japanese scores after this.
  • In the manga, Goku's fight with Oob lasts five pages, which is only beat out by the three pages of the Panpoot match for the shortest match in the manga (unless you count the pre-match chatter in the ring). The anime meanwhile drags the Oob match out into an entire episode, which itself must be a record for stretching out a fight.
  • After being struck into the ground by Oob during the extended fight, Goku floats out of his crater, which contradicts the end of the fight where Oob is shocked that Goku can fly.
  • Dragon Ball Z adds a filler scene where Knock and Captain Chicken attempt to flee the Tournament after witnessing Goku and Oob's fight, only for an official to ask if Knock is still intending to compete. This contradicts a scene from the previous episode where Knock is forefeited thanks to Vegeta.
  • In the anime, the crowd reacts in shock at Goku's feat of flying despite flight being used before in the 23rd and Boo arc Tournaments.
  • The anime changes the circumstances around the final moments of Oob's fight: Oob stops himself from falling out of the edge by hooking it with his foot, only for Goku to save him when it disintegrates. This is possibly so that the anime can show Goku deciding to save Oob rather than finish him, which is a habit he picked up starting with Piccolo at a previous Tournament.
  • Dragon Ball Z also has Goku note that Oob has probably never even thought about having a teacher, which reflects Goku's own experience at the beginning of the story before he met Master Roshi.
  • The anime also has Goku come up with the idea of training Oob on the spot, rather than pre-planning it as it appears to be in the manga.
  • Goku offers to solve Oob's money issues with Mr. Satan's money. Another possibility of course would have been Bulma's Capsule Corp. wealth.
  • In the manga and Z, Goku directly says that Oob's going to be the one protecting the Earth. In the The Final Chapters, Goku says they'll need Oob's help protecting the Earth, rather than making it sound like Oob will be solely responsible for it.
  • In Z, when Goku is saying his goodbyes, Vegeta says something to the tune of "When we fight, we'll need a whole planet as our arena." This would come to pass in their next fight, in GT. Oddly enough, in Kai he says something else, to the tune of "The ring is too small for a fight between us." (An example of the many minor changes to the Japanese dialogue for scenes that weren't in the manga)
  • Chichi has only two lines of dialogue in the manga version of End of Z: "What?!" and "He's gone..."
  • Of the Japanese and English versions, there are only three instances of a voice actor portraying Pan or Oob across both End of Z and GT:
    • At Funimation, Oob has consistently been voiced by Sean Michael Teague across Z, GT and The Final Chapters.
    • Both Elise Baughman for Funimation and Yuko Minaguchi for Toei started voicing Pan in GT, and returned to voice her in The Final Chapters version of End of Z.
  • In The Final Chapters, the ending montage and final scenes of the story are set to the FLOW cover of Ha-La Head Cha-La, which was used in the end credits of Battle of Gods.
  • In the anime, Goku is technically the loser of the match with Oob: he touches the ground as he says his goodbyes to Goten, Trunks and Pan.
  • The scene where Goku says goodbye to Pan has him say that he'll visit every once in a while, something he barely mentions in the manga. He also reminds her, Trunks and Goten that it's up to them to protect the Earth, which he's been wanting since the Cell Arc.
  • Goku's goodbye scene with Pan can be seen as a metaphor, where the audience is Pan not wanting Dragon Ball to end, and Goku is Toriyama, promising that he'll write more every once in a while.
  • In the anime, Vegeta notes that the Tournament is a poor setting for their match considering how powerful they and Oob are. He's is notably more okay with Goku abandoning their match than he was in the Boo Arc (smiling, even!), highlighting his character progression.
  • This is the second time in a row where more than one competitor has abandoned the Tenkaichi Budokai. Unlike the Boo Arc Tournament, the whole competition is called off once two competitors leave (four in the original Z) rather than adjusting the format like in the Boo Arc. To date it's the only Tenkaichi Budokai that's been cancelled (which is amazing considering Piccolo flattened the entire city and it still kept going).
  • As Goku's friends question why he's leaving them, Piccolo says that he hasn't seen Goku that happy in a long time. Well duh, they've barely seen each other for 10 years!
  • End of Z manages to reference every single Dragon Ball Arc in some way:
    • The final panel of the manga shows a pteranodon, the very first being Goku defeats in the Pilaf Arc.
    • Oob has entered the Tournament to earn enough money to buy his struggling village some food, just like how Nam (also a dark-skinned character) entered to earn money to buy his struggling village some water in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai.
    • In the Kanzenban ending, we see the image of Goku on Kinto'un in his red gi with the Noyi-bo, which is heavily associated with the Red Ribbon Arc.
    • Oob is visibly shocked that Goku knows how to fly. Flight, or Bukujitzu, made its debut in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai.
    • Goku abruptly leaves his friends with no indication when he'd be coming back, like end of the Daimao Arc
    • Goku specifically attends the Tournament looking for the reincarnation of his most recent opponent, just like the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai.
    • End of Z debuts a brand new character who is extrememly young and timid but has incredible power when emotionally provoked, just like the Saiyan Arc did with Gohan.
    • Among the characters watching Goku and co. is Dende, the first friendly character met in the Namek Arc.
    • When Goku is first alluding to Oob to Vegeta, Vegeta asks if they're an Android, who played central roles in the Android/Cell Arc.
    • Goku unexpectedly leaves by flying directly out of the new, larger Tournament stadium, like he did in the Boo Arc.
  • The final Dragon Ball filler scene is the ending montage depicting the Dragon Team holding their own tournament after Goku leaves with Oob.
  • Because Toei JUST CAN'T FREAKING HELP THEMSELVES, in their montage one of the scenes is Roshi staring at swimsuit girls with his binoculars. Which doesn't even make any sense considering the tournament had been abandoned. FFS.
  • Pan is able to win both of her Tournament matches (Mo Kekko and Goten) by slapping her opponent, soon leading to her victory.
  • Famously, in 2002 the Kanzenban version of the manga was released seven years after the manga ended, as 34 volumes rather than the 42 of the Tankobon. While not as large as the original Shonen Jump publication, it was still larger than the Tankobon. This release featured the coloured pages in their original colours for the first time rather than in greyscale. It also featured extra pages for the end of Chapters 516 and 519, with 519's changes being the most famous of all:
    • On page 15, the last four panels are replaced with Goku calling Kinto'un for the first time since he had to rush to Vegeta and Nappa, and puts Oob onto it.
    • Page 16 now has a large panel of Oob flying Kinto'un, with the ghostly image of Kid Goku flying it next to him as he did in the Red Ribbon Arc (and modern Goku flying behind). The bottom of the page has a panel of Goku smiling.
    • Page 17 are new drawings of the last three panels of the original Page 15, showing Goku and Oob flying into the horizon, followed by the Narrator's parting words.
    • Page 18 has the original group shot and "The End" drawings from the original Page 16, but now Toriyama's goodbye message has been replaced with two new panels of Vegeta back at the Tournament resolving to defeat Goku one day.
    • The new panels added for the last four pages of the Kanzenban version are entirely new drawings from Toriyama circa 2002. They've been coloured digitally (as shown by the ghostly image of Kid Goku), but intentionally match the original's limited colour palette. The only major change is Oob's skin colour being a lighter shade of brown, and the Dragon Balls in the final panel being coloured orange rather than being left white.
    • The new panel where the Narrator concludes the story features a Pteranodon, which is the first opponent Goku ever fought in the story.
    • The anime added a shot that was a closeup of Goku's face to show how happy he is, something Toriyama would also do for the Kanzenban ending. The anime also ends its montage with a shot of Vegeta looking to the sky after Goku left, again something Toriyama would also visit later.
    • The Narrator's closing words have been adjusted to say that the Earth will be okay thanks to the "incredible guys" who live there, as opposed to the fact that they have the Dragon Balls. While the latter namedrops the title objects so that they're the last words of the manga, the rewrite reflects the Boo Arc's criticism that the heroes relied on them too much, and puts the focus squarely on the characters instead.
    • To date, the Kanzenban ending has only appeared three times: in 2002's Kanzenban, in 2008's Digest Edition, and in 2013's Full Colors. It has never been adapted in an animated form, not even The Final Chapters (it stuck with just using the original animation from Dragon Ball Z, but the ending was admittedly expanded by the anime and thus feels like the Kanzenban ending anyway). This ending has also never been translated into English, since ViZ's Full Colors only cover the Saiyan and Namek Arcs.
      • The Kanzenban ending's inclusion in the Digest Edition is anachronistic, since it was billed as being like reading the manga in Shonen Jump in the 80s and 90s, when the Kanzenban ending was created in the 2000s. Regardless, the Digest Edition is notable for being the only version of the Kanzenban ending to be printed in the same dimensions as Shonen Jump, aka "full size".
  • Interestingly, the visual of the Dragon Balls floating in the narrator's panel is evocative of the anime's title cards.
  • Goku concludes his journey in Dragon Ball by taking on a sheltered, untrained student to teach them on a tropical island, and gifting them Kinto'un. He is therefore in the same position Master Roshi was when he first met him 35 years prior at the start of the manga.
  • The manga ends with a group shot of all the principle heroic characters from the series (and Yajirobe). Notably, it reveals the End of Z designs for Tenshinhan, Chaozu and Yajorobe, who were not depicted in that portion of the manga's story. This collage would be used as the first eyecatch of the End of Z episodes of The Final Chapters.
  • The Narrator concludes Dragon Ball Z by asking for Goku to return soon. Speaking of which...
  • Dragon Ball GT debuted in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z's exact timeslot the very week after Dragon Ball Z ended. It continues the Toriyama run that began with the original Dr. Slump anime in 1981.

The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Excellent work on the trivia. Another thing of note for me is how this Tournament is a bit of a subversion/parallel to the 23rd Budokai. Goku is looking for a reincarnation of the most powerful enemy he had faced up to that point. The only different is where Piccolo Jr. was evil, Oob was good, which greatly alters the tone of this tournament. And of course, both reincarnations fight Goku.
The story of DRAGON BALL starts from the moment Goku met Bulma. I don't really mind the Z, so long as it's understood that it's not the true beginning of the story.

I actually prefer the Goku vs Tenshinhan and Goku vs Piccolo Jr. rivalries to the Goku vs Vegeta rivalry.

Movie 13 is still my favorite Dragon Ball movie to this day. I’m not sure how much more I can say, but it hits most of the right spots for me. My only real gripe is that it’s the one Dragon Ball movie I actually think could’ve benefitted from being a little longer.

Dragon Ball's timeline is actually 1984-2019 in real-life terms, because Dr. Slump is set in 1980 and according to the Daizenshuu, Dragon Ball starts 4 years after Dr. Slump begins. IIRC, Toei even picked the specific year for Battle of Gods because it coincided with 2013, its release year.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Movie 13, while not my favorite, is definitely the best Dragon Ball Z movie of the Boo era

I'm also a big fan of Movie 13, from memory. I think I prefer the first two DBZ movies at least, but Movie 13 might be my 3rd favorite.

I've always found the part where Tapion gives Trunks his sword at the end a rather bizarre nod/Easter egg because it looks almost exactly like Future Trunks' own blade. Almost like they were going for some kind of hint even when i don't think that's explicitly what they were intending, that being exactly how Trunks came to obtain his sword because of course present Trunks and his future counterpart are different versions of the same character and even though the sword looks almost the same it's hard to say that's how Future Trunks got his.

Aside from that, i really like movie 13 overall as far as the three which came out during the Buu arc even if the final battle isn't the best.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

In fact, this movie marks the first sign that Toei considers Ultimate a transformation, as we see him powering-up to it for the first time. Gohan transforms into Ultimate again in Movie 14 (despite having Toriyama's involvement) and in Dragon Ball Super's Universe Survival saga.

It seems to be a permanent state in the manga, as no powering-up has been shown so far.

Megumi Urawa (Erasa) voices Oob in these episodes while Hiro Yūki (Sharpner) voices Tapion in the movie. It was nice that they valued those two actors and their previous work enough to cast them in these roles.

I see that they gifted Tōru Furuya (Yamcha) one last line near the end of 291 ("Training...? What does that mean?!").

Because Toei JUST CAN'T FREAKING HELP THEMSELVES, in their montage one of the scenes is Roshi staring at swimsuit girls with his binoculars. Which doesn't even make any sense considering the tournament had been abandoned. FFS.
It looked to me like the ladies were on their way out. There were probably still some folks vacating the arena while the gang began fighting. I don't mind it since Roshi is such an important character to the series and having him in the final sequence pays respect to both the character and his late actor.

Thank you for the invaluable content, Robo4900 and KBABZ.
Hey, don't thank us yet, we've still got GT to cover...

Still, appreciated very much. Thanks for watching along and/or reading our trivia. :)
WittyUsername wrote: Mon Dec 06, 2021 5:25 pm Movie 13 is still my favorite Dragon Ball movie to this day. I’m not sure how much more I can say, but it hits most of the right spots for me. My only real gripe is that it’s the one Dragon Ball movie I actually think could’ve benefitted from being a little longer.
It's very good.

I honestly think it was originally scripted to be longer. They cut the OP at the last minute, and you can tell from the inconsistent sound quality of the dialogue that there was probably a lot of editing in certain parts. I suspect somewhere in the vault, Toei has a VHS workprint or something that's at least a few minutes longer.

On a meta sidenote, at one point I considered having this movie be its own week, and have Z 289-291 and GT 1-2 in the same week, to capture the fact that Z 291 and GT 1 aired one week apart in the same timeslot, and also to create more of a feeling of the in-universe gap between the time period this movie and Z 288 take place in, and the EoZ timeframe. But then we end GT's first two weeks on episodes 2 and 7, arguably its two low points. Instead, we end this week with Z 291, which is certainly a high point, it's the end of the original manga which is very clean, and IMO ending GT's first three weeks with episodes 5, 10, and 15 makes for a much stronger beginning to the GT segment of the rewatch.
I did have DB 153 and Z 1 in the same week, which is a decision I stand by, but GT has always been a more definitively separate production, a Toei-produced sequel to the Toriyama story, rather than DB and Z which was only split up due to marketing, both were done with basically all the same staff and both were adapted from Toriyama's manga.

... I may have overthought this, but hey, I've had a lot of time to do it. This has been a long time coming. :)
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

I'm also looking forward to the Blue Water GT trivia. Once I'm done watching the sub for Z, I'll just to that dub for GT since I've already watched it subbed.

Has the Path to Power movie already been covered earlier, or is it going to be included with GT? Just wondering.

It'll be covered in GT. It's the one I'm looking forward to the most, to the point that I'll watch it multiple times: once in Japanese and again in English.

Speaking of which, the reason why End of Z's Trivia is so freaking long is that, in a first, I decided to not only read the manga as normal (and both the original and revised endings, of course), but also watch the episodes, TWICE: once in its original Z form in Japanese, and a second time watching Funimation's dub of The Final Chapters (with Japanese subs as backup).

Haha, I think that the rice cooker bit with Piccolo was hillarious and Toriyama's humor.
For Mafuba, you need some container to hold the culprit in and probably, Mutaito in a hurry grabbed the first thing at his disposal, which was a rice cooker :D

Boy, what a ride, amazing work, you guys!

Movie 13 is one of the cleanest movies, I agree with the guy who said it hits all the right notes for him. Even though, I still wonder how could Goku withstand attacks that defused Gotenks, everybody is doing something interesting. Vegeta saving people, Gohan doing saiyaman stuff with Videl, Gotenks failing, and Goku saving the day. Goten and Trunks running around, Shenlong, Bulma building stuff.

I was never a Tapion fan, but he is a good musician, even though I wouldn't buy any of his albums.

Yay!

I guess slight spoilers for next week, but I am actaully watching GT via the Blue Water dub too. The plan currently is I'll watch that dub while KBABZ watches subbed. Should provide an extra perspective for trivia. And so far (I'm watching about a week ahead for trivia purposes), I'm really enjoying it. :)
Will give my detailed thoughts in the relevant thread.

As KBABZ notes, we will be doing Path to Power as part of GT. It released during the run of GT.

The current plan is to run the movie along with GT episode 16 in just a few weeks' time, following GT 11-15 (slotting in nicely after the Black Star Dragon Ball hunt).

---

KBABZ asked me to make a few alterations to this week's trivia. There is a lot, so a couple of things were missed and a couple of corrections passed us both by. The corrections are mostly minor so I won't detail those, but here are the new additions:
  • Missed Trivia: The Namekian Dragon Balls have only been shown dispersing once, after Dende is able to wish everyone away to Earth to save them from Freeza.
  • It was later revealed that Toriyama did all of the artwork for the End of Z chapters by himself because he no longer had an inking assistant, putting even more pressure on him when making a chapter for the week.
  • The End of Z Tournament is the only Tournament to not show anybody hit or damage the "oni face" wall. It does however feature two characters hit the walls at the bottom of the grandstands.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

I gotta say, I hate the original colours of EoZ Goku. I prefer the blue gi with yellow pants from GT, then the blue gi and green pants from the anime and the final place is for the original colours of the manga.

The manga that I own has Goku flying with Oob on his back, no Kintoun.

Are you referring to the anime's cyan shirt or the manga's green shirt?
